KaizenSoze Posted August 5, 2020 Posted August 5, 2020 (edited) In my never ending quest to find a combo that works with traps. I have already tired Illusion, great set, just not my speed. Behold my latest creation. Level 28 right now. Pros: Force generator+Rock Armor..etc 60% s/l def, 42 ranged. I know that's too high, but it's a happy accident of the build Synergy between sets it's really good. immob: web grenade, fire cages holds: poison trap, cinders stuns: flashfire, seeker drones bonfire/acid mortar/caltrops Very proc friendly Cons: End of course, it's fire control. Not as bad as you think, because traps is an end lite set. Expensive for all the procs. Questions: What is the current thinking on procs in fire and traps? There are so many slotting possibilities. Frosticus Posted August 5, 2020 Posted August 5, 2020 I think if you use: seekers>bonfire>seismic>fissure you are going to be about 50 endurance down even after recovery. It looks like if you play aggressively you will be around net -8 end/sec. I don't see that as being sustainable. I've never tried the health procs in triage beacon, so I can't say how well they will perform there, but I do think you need to be in the aura for them to affect you (excluding the absorb proc). I definitely agree that fire/traps has a lot of synergy. I think the build you have now precludes all but ageless and might be a challenge to play without it. 2 Earth/Psi Dom - AV killer Arsenal/Sav Dom - AV Killer Poison - a guide to the most deadly poisons
KaizenSoze Posted August 5, 2020 Author Posted August 5, 2020 You're right about the beacon. I was not thinking when I slotted that. Those will get moved to Health. Might swap out beacon for smoke. Allow me to get closer before attacking. End is definitely going to be a problem. Seeker drone can be cast before the fight, so that will help. Everything is in flux. Figuring it out as I go, since there were no existing builds. Ageless seem mandatory, but I hoping with the defense, control, and mezz protection available I won't miss barrier. Proc slotting, now that is topic I am trying to get my head around for this build. I have read some of the proc monster threads but still... Currently, leading with bonfire, then flashfire, with drones following, plant the acid mortar, cage and hold till dead. Tomorrow I will probably have something different. roleki Posted August 5, 2020 Posted August 5, 2020 This is my Fire/Traps/Fire Controller; not as much focus on Def/Res, but wound up with 35.34 Melee, 32.21 everything else including Psionics Defense, and 71.49 S/L resist. Wound up taking neither of Smoke or Seeker Drones but I could easily pop out of the fighting pool and mule the +6% Def in Fire Shield to fit the -ToHit in because those are pretty decent. Frosticus Posted August 5, 2020 Posted August 5, 2020 Triage isn't a bad power, but it would certainly be better with a shorter cooldown and a faster cast time. It definitely helps in long fights though. Smoke isn't a bad idea if you want to drag your seekers in and have them engage first. I personally use 'target_location enemy' for seekers so they summon right at the spawn and break the alpha. I think they are one of the best powers in traps. You are right about ageless and you'll certainly be tough enough without barrier to tackle many things. One option though might be to get enough of a handle on your endurance that ageless radial is an option. The debuff resistance of that branch is really good in some situations and would protect your defense numbers fairly well. Procs are valuable. But keep in mind that trollers actually do ok damage to contained enemies, so you may not want to completely forgo damage slotting (ie seismic smash). However, most troller attacks are dot, so the upfront proc damage is welcome. Most of the traps summons don't roll procs as well as one might hope, but poison trap is a solid spot for procs. Keep in mind though, the -regen is autohit, but the hold (and procs) roll a tohit. Speaking of which your overall tohit chance is on the low side as soon as you start to face +lvl enemies. A few more global acc bonuses would help you out as well as finding a spot for kismet proc. You are right, fire/traps is a rare build. 1 Earth/Psi Dom - AV killer Arsenal/Sav Dom - AV Killer Poison - a guide to the most deadly poisons

roleki Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 @KaizenSoze It's actually pretty smooth if you remember to keep your FFG summoned 😉 Fire is, well, Fire, and Traps is a very underrated secondary. Secret MVP is Caltrops on top of Bonfire; nothing wants anything to do with you when those are underneath them, so you can sneak in and plant a bomb or stay out of melee entirely and just work on the heavies, occasionally applying Fire Cages to keep things from running out of your kill circles. I usually go Stone Epic on my controllers, but I was angling for something a little different on this one. I kind of miss it, but I still melt things fairly quick even without the freight trains. But like @Frosticus said, +ToHit is a bigger deal when you start running into + mobs. You may not have to go so far as to include Tactics (I try to as much as possible) but you'll get great mileage out of a Kismet. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but an additional 6% +ToHit is huge when you're swinging at +4s. 1 CEOs come and go, and one just went/The ingredients you got bake the cake you get
Doomguide2005 Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 (edited) Kismet's +6 is almost as good as a level shift if that helps put it in perspective. Base To Hit vs +4 = 39%, vs +3 = 48% and +2 = 56%. So instead of 39 you're looking at effectively 45% (instead of 48), instead of 48% you're looking at 54% etc.. Tactics is generally more than a level shift regardless of AT using it ... and 2 level shifts worth on a support set, particularly a defender. And of course applies that buff to more than just the user but any ally within 40ft. And it's why my scrapper with a level shift + Kismet + Tactics chews up +4 mobs with relative ease (and that isn't even counting potential stacks of Follow Up for more to hit). Edited August 6, 2020 by Doomguide2005
oedipus_tex Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Traps is a good set. 10 base Defense and Hold, Immobilize and Stun protection, which is actually better than Force Field gets in its big bubble. I feel like this build would benefit from a Resistance shield instead of a Defense unless you're trying to be incarnate capped. You can still soft cap to most positions while picking up much better resistances. Remember that Resistance armor if slotted with x4 Unbreakable Guard is worth 3.13 Melee defense. Since you will have Tough as well, this is worth 6.26 Melee defense total. I am not an expert on Traps and didn't mess with your proc slotting much. However I noted even with Kismet and Tactics several powers still have only around a 60% chance to hit a +4 enemy (once level shifted that improves somewhat but is still around a 75% chance). KaizenSoze Posted August 6, 2020 Author Posted August 6, 2020 Here is the latest iteration. Fixed some of the acc concerns by slotting more sets. Dropped beacon for smoke. Seekers have a short range, smoke lets me approach safely. Reduced the number of procs and increased the damage of powers that benefit from containment. Proc'ed heavily the powers that have a good chance to proc. I think. 🙂 Frosticus is right, seeker drones are the secret weapon. Drones->Flashfire End is still a problem, but I have been able to manage well enough. Level 38 now. oedipus_tex Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 (edited) Is there a reason you are seeking 58 defense to Smash/Lethal? That can help with iTrials or against -Defense effects, but I still think it's more important to shore up your resistance. Even soft capped, a significant number of attacks will get through. If it's just because you really want Seismic Smash and Fissure you can make it work, but to me this build, like Time/Force Field/other Traps builds begs for a Resistance armor to shore up the whole package of tankiness. In most content, this build won't be much more survivable, and possibly actually less so, than other IOed Controllers who don't get a big bubble shield. Other sets take Rock Armor because capping to S/L is hard for them, but you can easily do it while still taking a Resist shield. Edited August 6, 2020 by oedipus_tex
KaizenSoze Posted August 7, 2020 Author Posted August 7, 2020 It's the stone attacks I want, the armor is just a bonus. I would take a resist armor, if there are good attacks to go with it. Night Pixie on Excelsior Introduction to Arachnos Widows - Night/Blood/Fortunata
