I am trying to come to an understanding of Ice / Times powers.  I will play Ranged.  Many plans to easily softcap ranged def.  If only AoE softcap were as easy I would be ecstatic.

 

I have a decent knowledge of Ice primaries powers.  I have run them on Blasters and Sentinels.  I tend to like them all.  I need the Loc AoE target macro for tareget and self.  misplaced that lol.

 

But there are some powers, as I dig in, I find I may not be using correctly.  Then there is Time, which, I have taken on a few Blasters, but have no idea how the nuts and bolts of how the powers work or how to get the most out of them.  I am thinking either Ice or Force as an Epic, kind of preferring Ice, for theme.  Also lost there 🙂

 

So, anybody got an hour to explain what I am supposed to be doing?

  • Unless you're really in love with the set bonuses, I wouldn't 6-slot Trap of the Hunter in Time Wall. You don't need more duration on the immobilize. Either 1-slot it with an acc IO or slot it for damage. I recommend the former.
  • Slot Freeze Ray for damage, not for hold. It's one of the best DPA attacks in the set.
  • Temporal Healing is a toggle. It doesn't need recharge. Slot for healing.
  • Although it has a really long cast time, Bitter Freeze Ray is your highest damage attack. Slot it for damage, not for hold.
  • Snow Storm doesn't need 6 slots - either 1-slot with an endred IO or and a 2nd slot with a slow IO. 
  • Drop Flash Freeze, take Frozen Armor.
  • Time Shift is an AoE stun with an accuracy penalty. It needs 4-6 slots to be useful. The tohit debuff is incidental and not worth slotting for.
  • I'm not sure if you have some concept in mind, but not clear why you've got Invisibility, Phase Shift and Teleport. You would be better served picking up Hibernate and/or Hoarfrost. 
  • You don't need all the +end IOs in Health and Stamina. You get more than enough end from Temporal Healing.

The Blaster /Time has the "Time Crawl" effect (boosting the effect of /Time powers) that gets triggered by application of more than one of the secondary powers.

 

My /Time build only has a single slot in Time Wall, but ultimately this comes down to where you invest slots. Accuracy is preferred because this will help trigger the "Time Crawl" on a target.

 

I have no in-depth build critiques, but I can make a few comments:

 

I have Time Stop, and I have it 6-slotted with PVP Gladiator's Net. I find those set bonuses to be very good for my Blaster.

 

I agree with your slotting of Chronos. I keep Chronos on auto; It fires roughly every 21 seconds, for the first 10 of those seconds I have a 90% chance of the extra %Build Up.

 

I don't fault you for not taking either End of Time or Future Pain if you plan to exclusively be at range. I don't have Aging Touch, so I use Future Pain as the melee option. I don't think you need both. End of Time is a nice attack chain filler when you are up close and don't necessarily want to target; it is where I have a Blaster ATO set.

 

Temporal Healing is a toggle, recharge slotting is of minimal help. I have this 6-slotted for the Preventive Medicine set bonuses, but there are plenty of other good options.

 

I played around with Time Shift, but I found that the Disorient wasn't working well in my attack chain/strategy. I almost always gives Stuns a chance to pleasantly surprise me and this one did not.

 

The only power choices that jumps out at me that I'd like to read your thoughts on are:

 

Aim (level 6): I have Aim in my build, but with Chronos (at level 10) I don't really need it for most content, so I put it off until much later (level 47!)

 

Hover (level 16): I seek that this is a mule for LotG, but it looks (to me) like it may be coming too early in the build (for the little bit of extra defense). YMMV.

Thank you both Uun and Tidge!  Exactly the type of analyzation I was wanting.  Based on your suggestions (and straightening out some of my major misconceptions) I have revised the build in a big way.

 

I still wanted to put 5 Grav Anchor in Time Wall.  Until I realized that was unenhanceable?  So....  I Love having some Dom type powers and kept Pacing of the Turtle in Snow Storm.  This may be a crazy idea.  (I am known for those)  If there is a better use for those 5 slots I am all ears.

Time Wall is absolutely enhanceable. Not sure what you're seeing to indicate it isn't. In any case, if you're going to 1-slot it, you should slot acc. As Tidge said, Time Wall provides boosts to other /Temporal powers which follow it when used on the same target.

 

If you want the set bonuses from Pacing of the Turtle, that's fine, but you should be aware that the pieces enhancing accuracy, damage and range do nothing in Snow Storm. It can only be enhanced for end reduction, slow and recharge.

 

You should update to the new version of Mid's (https://midsreborn.com/). There were a lot of changes to the Blaster secondaries in I27, including a bunch to /Temporal.

been playing both this and my dark/mental blaster.  as much as i want pure ranged the dark mental just seems so much more fluid in combat  I have always enjoyed cones and struggle mightily with location AoEs.  One is 39 and one is 42 now.  Doing TFs for playtesting / merits /enjoyment.  Ice/Time looks so good on paper.  I just really struggle to bring it to the slamfest.

You may find some utility in setting up macros to help with targeted AoE powers. For example, one of my characters has a macro to drop Bonfire a short fixed distance in front of him. All I have to do is look in the direction I want and then trigger it.

The downside is that macros will not show the recharge state of the power, but I keep the default power in the tray above the macro as an indicator.

 

You can set up similar macros for powers which target specific (or targeted) enemies.

Bringing this thread back alive for a sec, but wanted to also slot out my Ice/time/Cold blaster. @Snarky I took your build and made some amendments, particularly in moving set bonuses around to lessen the ranged defense (still over the cap though), and try to round out the build a little more. Keeping it solely at range and reslotted to get some more resistance as well as LotGs in the build. I managed to keep the defenses at a place I'm happy with, while bringing the resistances up at least a little.

 

I'm honestly kind of surprised with the numbers as it is, which is making me feel like I'm missing some mistake glaring me in the face. Would love any feedback on this build, going to take some money to build it out but looks very fun!

I've put together this build of an Ice/Time blaster I plan to play in the thick of the action. It's looking pretty good so far, but I don't know why the hami-o in Weave doesn't increase the defense percentages. I don't understand HOs. I'm trying to get the defense percentages up a little more. Any ideas for improvement would be much appreciated. Cost is no concern to me.

You slotted an Enzyme in Weave. Enzyme enhances Defense Debuffs. You need to slot a Cytoskeleton to enhance Defense Buffs.

  • Take Bitter Ice Blast instead of Bitter Freeze Ray. It has much higher DPA.
  • Don't skip Aim.
  • Rectified Reticle is a crappy set to put in Chronos, since it caps at lvl 20. Slot Gaussian's instead (inluding the %BU proc). Move the Increased Perception global to Combat Teleport.
  • Not sure why you're taking the powers in your secondary so late. Reshuffle and take them much earlier.

Too many 6 piece full sets. This is not the type of game where a full set is always better. This is the type of game where you stack the set bonuses you need to achieve your build goals. 
 

The too many full sets metric is my first metric for evaluating builds, usually it gives me a pretty good idea of the skill level of the person that made the build. Now there are builds out there that do require full sets in multiple powers, but those builds are far and few in between.

 

if you see builds posted with a lot of full sets, you may want to give pause to copying the build. Truly cohesive builds will stop at the point where the desired set bonus in the set is achieved and invest the remaining slots to further strengthen the build’s primary goals rather than wasting them on set bonuses that provide the build less value.
