Help with EM/Rad build (Energy Melee/Rad)

Recommended Posts

I've been toying with experimenting with the new EM on a Scrapper given the crazy ST dps, and thought it might pair well with /Rad given Rad's bag of tricks that include +recharge (beta decay), +dmg (Meltdown), and 2 PBAOEs that can be proccy good in Rad Therapy and high-target-cap Ground Zero.   So that those two PBAOEs (both of which have big radii) could compensate EM's lack of high quality AOE.

I know Resistance sets are not best on Scraps - I tried to build this to be at ~32% def for S/L/Melee (so 1 small purple would soft-cap) and then have Shadow Meld to fall back on for greater Def on demand.  I also tried to push up the RES numbers, fill the Psi hole, and get it to cap (75%) with Meltdown (and as close I as I could without it).  I had to underslot Moonbeam.  I kept Power Crash but I really have no idea how good it is as a cone (with Energy Focus) or if it is worth keeping (or Whirling Hands, which I skipped, due to small radius).

Having to take Maneuvers and Combat Jumping meant I am locked out of pools for taking either Jaunt (gutter combat teleport) or actual Combat Teleport, both of which I'd like to have.

Very open to suggestions and tips on how to get the most out of EM ... Not sure of slottings, left a spare slot in Bone Smasher if it's worth a proc?  Presumed +50% crit IO goes into TF (put the whole set there).  Went full damage + Proc on ET.

Also haven't run Rad on a scrapper so any tips there would be helpful.  Thanks!

(Presume incarnates would be Musc Total Core, and Assault on the left tree, not sure if Ageless messes too much with proc chances due to the +rchrg? -- what's the go-to mix?)

Ageless doesn't affect proc rates, which in a way makes it even more useful for any build leveraging procs.

Worth noting /rad has tons of endurance management by default, and EM/ is the most efficient powerset on DPE (because ET costs 0 end). It doesn't necessarily show up easily on Mids - Gamma Boost gives you increasing recovery as health goes down, and Particle Shielding also has an unenhanceable +50% recovery.

That is to say, your current build is likely overkill for endurance management, especially with mostly full sets in attacks (ergo good local endurance reduction) and several Unbreakable Guard bonuses. I bet you couldn't run yourself dry even before using Ageless.

So that could allow you to get Barrier to stack at least 5% def/res on what you have, and possibly save some slots chasing +res here and there; or you could keep Ageless and save a bunch of slots dedicated to end, essentially the perf shifter procs, miracle, numina, end mod in stamina.

With these slots you could flesh out Particle Shielding (it can make good use of a full Preventive set, the proc is always good on any character). Or you could add these slots to Moonbeam.

Other option, given that ET doesn't use end and recharges so fast, and Moonbeam does use end and can use extra recharge without hurting proc rate, you could swap the last 2 Heca slots from ET to Moonbeam, keeping mostly the same set bonuses (trading 10% accuracy for 4% damage, that's a plus, you have tons of accuracy as is). Yet another option could be to slot full Apoc in MB, keep Heca proc, dam, dam/end in ET, and use the remaining 3 ET slots for 3 damage procs.

  • Thanks 2

Thanks, @nihilii.  Those are great tips.

What are your thoughts on keeping Power Crash and how it works as a cone vs, something else (whirling hands?) or using the slots somewhere else?  The  -RES proc can fit in either of them, not sure which better for more consistently applying it.  Maybe WH.

Also any thoughts on how to work in Combat teleport (i'd probably have to give up CJ or Manuevers, CJ seems like the most likely candidate but would put me <30% def to S/L/M and lose the LoTG recharge IO.

here's a slightly tweaked version with some of your tips - i can't figure out how to 6slot Particle shielding, but i put the Preventive proc in it at least.  I changed up the Ground Zero slotting -- i don't know if putting an Achilles -RES in it would be better than a damage proc (I put a 4th damage proc in place of the Damage/KD proc, though the mitigation could also be good I guess), but maybe it would be given the large radius and high target cap of GZ (how long does the -RES last)?

Bone Smasher slotting - keep the 5-slot set with 6th proc?  Or move the proc slot to Meltdown for recharge?

Here's the most updated try at it.

  • Moved the 50% crit proc (and set) into Bone Smasher per tip in other thread - BS -> TF (to get TF to crit), then ET -- since a crit-TF gives 2 charges of energy focus for 2 fast ETs.
  • Dropped power crash for Whirling Hands.  Kept the PVP set for the -RES proc and the +RES it gives (3.75% to fire/cold/psi/toxic) vs proccing out WH.
  • Changed up the Ground Zero slotting for more damage and procs - can't tell if putting an Achilles -RES proc would be better than the Lady Grey negative energy proc.  Lost the utility of the KD proc but probably "moar dmg" is better.
  • Changed up to Ageless Radial for the DDR.  I'm hoping that otherwise end use is manageable with changed slottings.
  • Probably won't keep Storm Elementals - I thought they might have good AoE but I'll probably go BP with the invuln sub-pet.

Any additional feedback?

I sort of feel like it's a decent balance between RES, def and damage. I could probalby swing way more to damage and have to yield on RES or Def, or push for way higher melee def at the expense of damage or RES.  But with Rad's bag of tricks including absorb and self-heal, and the potential heal from fast ET, maybe this is a good hybrid.

Here's the most updated try at it.

  • Moved the 50% crit proc (and set) into Bone Smasher per tip in other thread - BS -> TF (to get TF to crit), then ET -- since a crit-TF gives 2 charges of energy focus for 2 fast ETs.

Your bonesmasher has about a 25% chance of triggering critical strikes. You don't "need" critical strikes for EM to be great, but...

Run the probability of triggering critical strikes and then landing a critical with TF. You won't be seeing many double fast ET's. Barely more than you'd see just from TF's base crit rate.

What would you do Frosticus?  Just keep the critical strikes proc in BS and remove all IOs with recharge?  Maybe put the 5-slot rest of the set back in TF?

I dunno. I'd try it out in a few different spots and see what suites your playstyle the most. I don't use the entire set for critical strikes, I only have the proc on my em/fa.

I'm using it in burn now (which doesn't help you), but had it in TF for quite awhile too. With it in TF I focused more on trying to cram in BS, EP, Moonbeam while under the buff. They all become pretty fantastic under full crit. Double fast ET is a dream (which was my intent with putting it in burn, but it isn't as reliable as I'd hoped so far). That  might be more for stalkers as they can reliably pull it off.

Following this thread because EA/Rad seems like it would be an uber AV killing machine that is also great at other general content. I'm liking how this build is looking!

Welp, here's an alternate version ... not sure honestly if this would be better or not.

1) Swapped out rest of Critical Strikes set from Bone Smasher, leaving only the proc.

2) Replaced the critical strike 5-IOs with 5 from Mako's Bite incluidng the damage proc, which means losing out on a 10% recharge bonus (and 15% acc bonus, but seemed overkill), but picked up +Res to S/L/T/Psi - pushing base S/L res over 71% (up from 67%).  Damage buff stayed about the same.  I'm hoping the 10% recharge bonus loss would be offset enough by Beta Decay and Ageless.  Not sure.

3) Idea is that now it's easy to swap the Critical Strikes proc between BS and TF to see where it fits better (if it goes in TF, then BS can get the Touch of Death damage proc).

4) Not sure if I should catalyze the Makos 5 IOs (to keep bonuses at lower levels) vs +5ing them to hit ED on damage/acc/etc.

Open to further suggestions and tips.  Thanks, all!

i go agility for alpha (gets you defense), and ageless pumps up your endurace and recharge if you go with core paragon.  Best to try different combo's to see what fits your playstyle.  I think whirling hands is better than power crash, as P/C requires you to line up your targets and you basically have no AOE.  I did the same thing at first on my em scrapper, i killed bosses very efficiently then found myself click click click click taking out the mobs 1 X 1.

Open to further suggestions and tips.  Thanks, all!

I usually don't break up the procs from the scrapper sets, I put one in ET, and the other in TF, Hecacomb in bonesmasher, superior blistering cold in energy punch, and i use whirling hands with the avalanche set over power crash.  Moonbeam i go winter's bite or you can go with the purple set for more reacharge.  I haven't tried /rad yet on a scrapper so not sure where the biggest holes are, but for my /ice scrapper i needed more balanced defense and was easily soft capping smash and lethal, so i put shield walls in with the LotG proc to get the recharge bonus and have better energy defense.  I don't know how that applies here. I'll play around in mids and see what i can stretch out if this is a money is no object build :).

Love to see what you come up with.  Yeh, i'm largely funding this through all my accumulated merits (to buy recipes / IOs) and accumulated cash.

Many of my set choices were for +dmg bonus or +RES (to drive up the base S/L/E/N/T/P res of the build).  I wasn't chasing def as much, though I put S/L/M def at ~32% so theoretically one small inspi would soft cap (and use Shadow Meld for everything else).   The slotting on ET was based on the suggestions above to max damage/procs, so not full set.

I had done it in mids but closed without saving as I was at work. I’ll redo and upload the build. Here are the numbers I got out of it. First pic was yours as is. Next was the changes.

I started going rikti pets cause they cast 3 AM's on you during its time up. BP rain of fire made too many runners for my taste, I'll just have a personal AM machine. I've also tried Seers for fortitude, but I feel like I get more out of the Rikti.

i wouldn't slot ET like that, you are shoving so many procs in there but not slotting for full regular damage. i would put 5 hecatombs in there, get that 10% recharge as you don't have that many LotG procs in there.   Maybe leave negative energy or lethal in there with the 5.  The biggest hole is the defensive numbers, you can't softcap D on /rad so if you could get a little more balance across the board it will make your non capped resistances do more.  you took slots from stamina and health, i did also. the more i look at /rad the more i realize every power is needed. be nice to get shield wall in shadow meld so you get more natural recharge in it and also get those energy and negative energy defense along with the lotg proc.  you'd need to scrape 2 slots though.

Ok, i changed some things around and kept some things in i didnt have from your last build.  Overall, resistances and defenses are higher, at the cost of losing some procs and some shifting around on slots.  You will have less psionic resistance but much more stout in other areas where i'ts more likely to play a factor in game.  Im going to level up mine to try it out as well.  I got rid of the tier 9 in favor or tactics, might not be the most popular move but the gain you are getting from the tier 9 is really not much with these active numbers.  In doing so, i moved the chance of buildup proc into the toggle instead of in build up.  I've never done a build up from within a build up before so maybe that's worth trying out.  Crazy that metdown is really just a mule power but at the same time that goes to show you how strong the rest of the set is.

Thanks @Incursion  I will check out your suggestions.

Below is my current Live build, I've been running +4/+8 PI mishes to test it out.

What I'm noticing is an accuracy problem, maybe only with mobs that do to-hit debuffs, but that includes Council Galaxies (I think) plus a lot of Arachnos and Carnies.  I'm wiffing in the 60%-80% hit range a lot, it feels.  Might be feeling the missing Kismet - might have to sub out the scaling resist IO from Reactive Def and pop in Kismet.

Meltdown was kept not only to cap resists across the board but for its 41.25% damage buff on Scappers (higher than other ATs).  So basically it's used pro-actively for the +dmg buff.  It seems to last like 60-75 seconds, so I will have to think about dropping it.  I don't have it on my Rad Armor tank -but one reason for rolling Rad on scrap was this damage buff.

What I will say is that Rad Therapy and especially Ground Zero are amazing proc bombs, and you can melt whole spaws with WH-RT-GZ-WH.  GZ is a proc nuke that also has a strong DOT component.

Also maybe it's observer error but I do see the Critical Strikes proc going off more in Total Focus than it was in BS.  It makes the TF->FastET smack like a truck when it hits.  Sure you miss the critical proc on TF itself, but the rate feels higher.  Need a number cruncher to tell me how much higher % chance is in TF vs BS, but it feels like more.

I’ll check this out later, I didn’t realize meltdown was used offensively, good to know.  I was able to cap most of your resistance an nearly double so of your D in some areas, em hits like a truck, I’d rather the surviveability. Do the scrapper profs effect all powers? Thought they did. I have mine in ET and TF on my em/ice

Meltdown lasts 60 seconds according to mids, but because you have only 1 slot there, and no recharge, you have 293 seconds rechage with 60 seconds of it running.  I just flipped that back in instead of tactics 1 with proc only in there, and i have it at 179 seconds recharge and 60 running, so up 1 minute, down two. I also use ageless for incarnates which help recharge a little more. I use the other core though for the endurance recovery.

Thanks!  I will check it out (it's a very busy work week).  I will say that I will have to struggle hard to consider de-proccing Radiation Therapy and Ground Zero -- they are great damage deals when proc'd and honestly one of the reasons I went /Rad for this Scrapper.  The non-proc'd or less-proc'd versions showing above are doing <50% or less damage in MIDS on quick review.  My whole idea was to supplement the ST of EM with the /AOE proc-bombs from Rad (especially considering their target caps, with GZ at 30 and RT at 10+) .   As you've noted, the fraken-proc-slotting means you give up some set bonus opportunities.  Just wanted to provide context.  I'll see what else I can pick up from your approaches.  I really appreciate you taking the time and making the effort, thanks again!

I left 2 dmg procs and the absorb proc in radiation therapy, and 2 debuffing procs in ground zero.  you could take the scirocco's proc from radiation and put in proc from eradication, then remove the 3 analyze weakness in ground zero and put 3 Scirocco's in there (lethal being the dmg proc) so you keep the same resistance in.  I get the point of keeping procs in to try and boost your core dmg powers, but you could use some more recharge so the clicks are up more often and the defensive bonuses on the winter sets especially are huge. Meltdown being your biggest dmg boost as you had mentioned could use more recharge as well,  your down time was really long.   I'd take 45% buff across the board up double the amount of time over a roll/chance from a click power proc in my opinion (i could be wrong) You'll figure it out, and i'm happy to help and learn along the way too.  I was so fascinated by this combo, i kinda pled one last night and this morning and now i'm 50 and starting to slot haha.  Your builds had given me some things i hadn't though about too.  win/win.

Would it make sense to flip the sets between energy punch and ET?

Well, the way I slotted ET it was about at least 3 damage procs, so probably not.  I barely use Energy Punch, hence it's a good set mule.

I haven't gotten the chance to really sit down and look at things. I will say this, Whirling Hands sucks balls. So I'd be inclined to skip it maybe on a rebuild if the slots can do better things elsewhere, along with the power picks.  It's got such a tiny radius it barely hits things, and the damage is terrible (even with the -Res proc).  So if you can use the slots somewhere else for better bonuses, think about it.

That’s correct, I forgot you have it  slotted that way. I put the Proc in bone smasher like you did, I can see it triggering critical strikes on screen, but when I follow up with ET or TF I often don’t see it actually criting. Maybe it’s just my imagination, or the animations are too long to get it in that window of time. It does seemingly work with whirling hands being activated right after Bonesmasher. I do have to agree with you about whirling hands, it is crappy The cone on power crash when non-energy mode is abysmal and maybe worse. I had thought about maybe dumping Saul mastery and going with blaze instead, taking out whirling hands. In doing so, could probably six slot fireball, And move slot from shadow meld and moonbeam into meltdown and something else. On my version, that’s a lot of recharge lost unless I pick it up somewhere else. There isn’t very good AOE options for EM, but it’s kind of a single target set. It rips EB’a and AVa apart.

I got my EM rad scrapper slotted about 1/2 so far. Can definitely see the potential, and I really am using meltdown more than I thought I would. But because I’m so under slotted at the moment I was actually using it for a recovery.
