WanderingAries Posted March 11, 2021 Posted March 11, 2021 (edited) Forgot about this thread, but I'll leave it visible in case it helps somehow. Most people will want to follow the HC Launcher thread if they get directed here. Original Thread: Warning: This has had minimal testing, so anyone who wants to try this as a "clean" install, then let me know, and screen shot everything you can! Below is mostly a clone of the HC Launcher thread Updated: 03-11-2021 @ 8:05p EST Before I start ANYTHING, I need to thank @cheeseninja for the crucial direction on this as the VM based solution wasn't going so well performance wise. Tested on my Base Model Mac Mini M1 with all Game GFX settings to ULTRA! Not smooth as butter that way, but turning down to what a sane person would isn't a bad thing. 😛 Spoiler Notes: Rosetta 2 will need to be installed if not already, Type the following into the Terminal and Press the "Enter" key to install it manually softwareupdate --install-rosetta Otherwise it will install when you run the Launcher If you accidentally interrupt the process of installing Rosetta 2, then you will get an error Click the Close button and reopen the Launcher to start over Step 1: Install Island Rum/City of Heroes Spoiler I'll try to keep this up to date, but make sure to check Manga's Island Rum website for the most current file Download the Island Rum for Catalina/Big Sur from the website above Unpack the Island Rum (double click) Drag the "Island Rum.app" into the Applications folder Launch Island Rum You'll get a popup "Are you sure you want to open it?" Click the "Open" button Island Rum will open, but advise that the client is not installed Click the Install button and wait for it to finish installing Wine If not already installed, Island Rum will install the Xquartz application Click the 3 Continue buttons as the installation progresses Click the Agree button when it pops up Click the Install button Type the User password and Click the Install Software button A permission prompt will appear talking about "System Events.app", Click the OK button A prompt will appear mentioning that you may need to signout for this to take effect, Click the Ok button At some point, the Xquartz installation will complete, Click the Close button to finalize the task When that's complete, it will then automatically download the game files This process takes the longest, but eventually you will see it has finished Step 2: Permissions Spoiler We're not quite ready to play the game yet as we have a few permissions to get past Click the Play button when ready This will trigger a Permissions window Click the "Open System Preferences" button This will open to "System Preferences" -> "Security & Privacy"-> "Privacy" tab Click the padlock in the corner to unlock the window Enter the user password and click the Unlock button Make sure you're in the "Accessibility" section If the "Island Rum.app" is already listed, then Click the box next to in the list to place a checkmark If not, then you will need to manually add the app to the list, Click on the "+" sign to open the Finder When the Finder opens, Make sure you're in the Applications folder Locate the "Island Rum.app" from the list and Click the "Open" button The app has now been added to the list and should also have a checkmark automatically placed Close the System Preferences window and (Force) Quit the three Wine related apps currently open in the Dock Step 3: First Launch Spoiler The M1 platform introduced a few quirks that relate to the software you had to install and how it interacts with the OS. It may Look like it didn't work, but short of a 3rd party app or configuration issue causing trouble, it should be setup at this point to run the game. Relaunch Island Rum and Click the Play button This will trigger another popup about "Removable Media", Click the OK button For reference, this creates an entry in "System Preferences"->"Security&Privacy"->"Privacy" Tab->"Files & Folders" After you Click the "Play" button Wine will launch, but the player may not have noticed anything happening because all they will see is this in the upper left corner Instinctively, you'll want to Grab the corner of the window or Press the Green "Maximize" button to expand it only to find a completely blank window This will further frustrate you because the window will then shrink back down as it started while teasing you with the initial game music Have no fear, there's a simple trick that will get you back in business and playing in a heartbeat! Using the keyboard combo "Command + Enter", you will be able to toggle the game between a normal (and visible) Full Screen and the scary minimized size it started in Note: You should only have to do this ONCE unless you need to toggle to the desktop for some reason (MIds, Browser, etc). Otherwise, the game will remember which of the two settings was chosen even after restarting the Mac. Step 3: Post Install Migration Spoiler If you have any old installations of the game from Tequila, live, etc, then you need to manually copy/move your user files to the new Applications/coh folder. Here's an example of after the files have been copied Creating Shortcuts Spoiler If you're like me and don't want to bother opening the Applications folder Every time you play, then why not make a shortcut or two on the desktop. I generally make one for the Launcher and one for the Game's folder so that I can easily tinker with things. Note: If you accidentally Copy instead of Move, then you will have to delete the original Alias files in the Applications folder The Applications folder now contains both the Island Rum.app and the coh folder that now houses the new game files Right click on the Launch CoH.app and Choose "Make Alias" A new shortcut will be created (I labeled mine "Island Rum") Move the shortcut to your desktop for easy access to the game launcher We still need more input from those who choose to use the Island Rum launcher in order to verify that things are working as described, so let us know how it goes! WanderingAries Posted March 11, 2021 Author Posted March 11, 2021 (edited) A few things to know: My SIP is Disabled I only mention this because IDK if/how it may impact the situation, but per the requirements of another app, I've disabled the SIP feature on the Mac. You can look up what it's for, but I'm comfortable with it that way because I fully understand the risks. The same is actually true of my MBP for that matter, for the same reason. Rosetta 2 There's no clean way to remove Rosetta once it's there, but there is no harm in it remaining installed as it was created BY APPLE for the purpose of compatibility Screen Resolution Settings DO NOT TOUCH THEM OR BAD THINGS MIGHT HAPPEN Seriously though, leave it at whatever it started as because there is no way to "window" the game (as of this edit) and all of my testing resulted in nothing but trouble Edited March 11, 2021 by WanderingAries OG Server: Pinnacle <||> Current Primary Server: Torchbearer || Also found on the others if desired <||> Generally Inactive Installing CoX: Windows || MacOS || MacOS for M1 <||> Migrating Data from an Older Installation Clubs: Mid's Hero Designer || PC Builders || HC Wiki || Jerk Hackers Old Forums <||> Titan Network <||> Heroica! WanderingAries Posted March 11, 2021 Author Posted March 11, 2021 (edited) "Oh crap, something's wrong and I want to attempt a near-clean reinstall" No worries, I've come up with something that "should" accomplish as much as possible without resorting to wiping the OS (yes, I've tested That too :p). Consider the following the "Cleanup Method" I've established until someone more knowledgable corrects me *coughs*@Manga*coughs* Open "System Preferences"->"Security & Privacy"->"Privacy" Tab Accessibility: highlight and remove (the "-" below the list) the "Island Rum.app" entry Files & Folders: highlight and remove (the "-" below the list) the "Island Rum.app" entry Delete the hidden //SSD_NAME/Users/USERNAME/.privatewine folder Can't find this? Open a Finder window Use the key combo to toggle hidden items Command + Shift + "." (period) Delete the Applications/Island Rum.app Delete the Applications/coh folder Delete the Applications/Utilities/Xquartz.app Restart the Mac Disable/Pause any extra layers of security and any app running that doesn't need to be during the installation and first run Follow the guide setup by step making sure to give the Mac extra time to complete step (just in case something takes longer to trigger) Edited March 12, 2021 by WanderingAries OG Server: Pinnacle <||> Current Primary Server: Torchbearer || Also found on the others if desired <||> Generally Inactive Installing CoX: Windows || MacOS || MacOS for M1 <||> Migrating Data from an Older Installation Clubs: Mid's Hero Designer || PC Builders || HC Wiki || Jerk Hackers Old Forums <||> Titan Network <||> Heroica! VulnaviaPhibes Posted March 26, 2021 Posted March 26, 2021 This guide was super helpful, thank you so much for making it! But unfortunately the command+enter combo didn't work! The game window is still that unusable little block with the tantalizing game music, and no method of forcing full screen I've tried has helped! Do you have any troubleshooting tips?

Do you have any troubleshooting tips? Try restarting the launcher, sometimes the Mac as well. See if Control+Enter works. Also, it seems to be very particular about the Enter key in use being the one adjacent to the letters for some. At least one person had an issue where the numberpad Enter was treated differently by Wine. VulnaviaPhibes Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 I restarted and tried a few different key combinations. Control+Enter and Command+Enter both failed, but Shift+Control+Command+F got it in full screen for about half a second before it crashed. I'll do a fresh install and fiddle around a little, and I'll post here if I figure out what went wrong and how to fix it! ^_^
