*/TA Post Nerf, Looking for a Ranged Def Capped Hover Blaster

Hey All-

Just coming back to CoX after being away for a really long time (well before shutdown). I've got a 50 Spines/Fire Brute level'd and decently outfitted, 100 mil build roughly, that I am now looking for my 'do it all' main character, as in can handle most content mainly solo but also plays well in teams, on the higher end of diffuculty (+3/4, x8). Back in the day I ran a SS/WP brute that was fully built (purple IOs and all), and a AR/Kin Corruptor, and want to try to Blaster side of things (and play blueside).

What I really enjoy about WP is the lack of concern about maintaining the blue bar (I loathe running out of endurance and dropping toggles), and I've read /TA is the set for that on the blaster side of things. I also really want to run a soft-capped ranged hover build, and I also understand /TA has built in faster movement speed. Unfortunately, it seems /TA has been recently nerfed, and since then, it doesn't appear there's been much talk on it (that, or my search-fu is failing me).

I'm not opposed to any suggestions, but I've been leaning towards /TA obviously (for the reasons specified above), and been eye'ing Beam Rifle and Dual Pistols for primaries (I like guns, lol). However, I like powersets that 'feel' meaty, akin to SS or Stone Melee, or Energy Blast, etc. I've tried Archery, and Water.. and they just don't give you that feedback, that 'oomph', they just feel soft.

Ideally, the build would run Hover, Concealment (or some form of stealth, in favor of Hasten/Speed), Leadership and Fighting (the latter 2 I understand are necessary to reach ranged def cap).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

All blaster secondaries have sustains now that take care of end problems. /TA is not the only set that can do so.

On synergy beam rifle or assault rifle mesh better with TA since they have nothing in their kit that requires you to get close to the enemy. Powers feel "meaty" because they do knockback/down, and assault rifle does a lot more of that than beam rifle.

I recommend you take a look at Temporal Manipulation and Martial Combat. I think either of these 2 work. And would work well with a weapon primary.

I was under the impression Time was more of an in close, pbaoe ranged secondary? Do either lend themselves to a ranged/hover based build?

I was hoping you would respond, not gonna lie lol. As I've been combing the forums, your name and posts have come up multiple times and lend themselves to sound reasoning and logic (from my perspective). Is there another secondary that you would recommend that is in the realm of /TA functionally, but maybe does a better job of offering recovery/recharge/speed? Upshot being nerfed down to 15% recharge and agility being removed and rolled into Gymnastics (and nerfed), feels like it was potentially taken a bit to far down. Devices has the stealth component, and Martial appears to be the best recharge wise...

Devices is the only other contender for range heavy play but trip mine does require you to get in close. I suppose you could take fold space, lay a bunch of mine and drop mobs on top of it but I don't have the patience for that kind of play, especially on fast paced teams. Playing pure range blasters means you don't have a lot of damage options in the secondary because most of them favor melee range. /TA has oil slick arrow and a few very proccable utility powers that's the best option out of all your other options to pile on more damage. TA may have gotten a nerf on it's utility but it got a buff in damage. I consider that an overall win. With easily achievable softcap the benefits of those utility power pale in value compared to the ability to kill stuff dead quicker. When survival is no longer an issue, damage is the only thing left that matters.

If you like recharge all the more reason to go AR because of al lthe knockback FF proc opportunities.

Ok, my thinking on Martial was Reaction Time would help with the movement speed. I totally forgot that it was a weird click off to get boost. So sorry about that one.

Time only has 1 PBAoE which imo is skippable.

Time Lord is 20% recharge that is alwasy on. Chronos gives the same as well as Tohit and damage.
By having a "headstart" on recharge, you are able to put more sets/slots towards defense or whatever else you need.

Temporal Healing is always on and gives a Recovery boost.

I have a Time blaster and I skipped all the melee powers. I easily hit range defense soft cap.
As Fire is my Primary I could rely on it to do enough damage to not need any Damage from the Secondary.

I've got /TA, /Martial and /Temporal blasters. While several of /TA's powers got adjusted downward, the set still plays quite well. I think the addition of Oil Slick Arrow is a big plus, especially since the blaster version is on a 90 second recharge. /Martial and /Temporal each have 3 melee powers (2 ST & 1 PBAoE) that you can take or skip depending on your preference.

I wouldn't recommend Dual Pistols. I recently played it to 50 and was disappointed. Needs a snipe instead of the 5 degree cone with the stupid animation and a better nuke. Beam Rifle is quite good, but I'm not sure the feel is "meaty". Assault Rifle might be what you want if you're keen on a weapon set.

Trick to making Beam feel “meaty” is high recharge.  You get a good chain going and disintegrate coupled with the nuke do very well together on teams.  Solo, I can concede the point as it’s harder to get things bunched up to take advantage of the disintegrate mechanic of Beam.

There is no better time than now to make your own thread, post your build, and get feedback/help on it. Take the principles I discussed in the beam/temp thread and apply them, do your best, and then we can fine tune.

Make the effort, reap the rewards.
