Demons/Thermal Advice

So this is kind of what I've got planned for my Demons/Thermal MM, and I'm up for advice on slotting, power selection, or both. I've largely optimized for pet survival and global recharge.

Not sure if Sorcery is the way to go, with Mystic Flight, Spirit Ward, and Rune of Protection. I could swap them out for, say, Hover, Air Superiority, and Group Flight. Gets me travel powers that affect the pets, and one more personal attack. Or could pick up Fighting. I know my def/res are pretty low, but don't think adding Tough/Weave will get me much farther. Or taking Boxing/Kick/CrossPunch to give me more attacks will make much difference.

I'd prefer to keep Lash and Crack Whip, just because they're so cool looking.

Here you go. This should help you out a lot more. Recipes with your buffs will make the demons at 68% Dmg Resists.(Before any Demon buffs are added in) Your heals will keep em up just fine. They are your DMG. MM attacks are the lowest DPS in the game(Lower then a Defenders). So they are not worth taking, less you got the powers/slots to spare, like say a Forcefield MM, etc..

True but demons and crack whip is worth an investment.

Pros:

Sounds kewl as hell

Resistance debuff (hard targets its nice, like avs)

Range isnt bad

Cons:

You coulda taken xyz.

Pros are pointless, especially with Thermal as a Secondary.

Dont really agree but i played a demons/rad.  For one i was rarely so busy i didnt want for an occasional attack.  If i wanted said attack it sounding kewl is a bonus.  That said attack has a small resistance debuff is langiape.  It can open up some io options.

Dont thermals res debuffs req a hit check?  Does thermal hit res debuff cap so easy?  Is thermal a really busy set?

Wow. Never thought of taking zero attacks at all. It never occurred to me folks would even do that. Do you just manage the pets and buff/debuff? Do you bother with the p2w attacks like Sands of Mu and Brawl? I'll have to ponder on that a bit...

One thing's for sure, JJDrakken, your build looks way more survivable.

Guess I need to choose between survivability and cool-looking attacks 😕

Even in my original build, I could probably afford to move 1-2 slots from Cauterize to Heat Exhaustion to add some Accuracy.

I've made MMs without any attacks before - as @JJDrakken says their damage is bad and if you need something else they're the first to go. But with that said, I like the attacks in Demon Summoning, mostly in aesthetic and they're also the only ones that I feel could be included for performance, and I will go with "rule of cool" over performance in most cases anyway.

As @RageusQuitus2 says, the attacks all carry a short duration resistance debuff (9.375%) similar to (but smaller than) Sonic Blast's resistance debuffs. It softens things up and multiplies the damage your pets - and the rest of the team - are doing, so while you're not doing a lot of damage with the attack it's worthwhile IMO because of the extra damage you're getting from your pets by virtue of the added debuff (and if nothing else, once you can maintain attacking, add procs to get damage from them).

Also, Thermal isn't exactly a busy set - you put shields up once every 4 minutes, Melt Armor has a long recharge and duration, and in most situations the most taxing thing you need to worry about is keeping Forge up: it's not like you're going to be healing all the time. You'll probably spend more time yelling at your Demonlings when they run off where they aren't supposed to be, but other than that what else are you going to do?

So far I haven’t found thermal very busy, but I’m only L16 so far. I don’t recall it being busy.

But wow, jjdrakken’s build has 45% def(s/l) and 45% res(s/l). Mine has around 15 in each. I’m sure it makes a huge difference in play. Clearly his slotting choices make a big difference in getting those resists and defenses up.

I’d be giving up Bonfire, too. Which is another favorite and provides fun safety.

Looks like it's closer to 28% resist(all). There appears to be a bug in Mids where the pet 15% resist(all) bonus from Superior Mark of Supremacy is being treated as applying to self, rather than the pets. Was wondering how I gained ~28% resist (s/l) just from reslotting the 3 Summons and Hell on Earth....

Here's a newer try... Took some of JJDrakken's slotting ideas. Ditched Bonfire for Scorpion Shield. Swapped Sorcery pool for Flight. Defense(38%) and Resist(33%) went up at the cost of Global Recharge(56%). And I got a third attack, Air Superiority which ought to fill in dead space in the rotation.

Nice, and what I'm going to say isn't negative at all.  This game is all about how you want to play.

But if you've never tried it on a MM. Bonfire is a game changer.   I picked it up on my thugs poison and, I was like How The F### is this allowed on a MM.

Oh, boy, do I love Bonfire with KB >> KD! I have it on my Beast/Nature MM, and my Fire/Psi Blaster, and maybe one or two others. Watching the lionesses go to town on flopping bad guys just cracks me up.

And while it is thematically appropriate for both demons and fire, I might try Scorpion Shield first. Maybe. Easy enough to respec out Scorpion Shield for Bonfire.

Seriously, your playing a Pet Class, 100% your actual Dmg is from your pets. A Mastermind if spec'd right can tank, heal, buff, debuff, & DPS all in one. DPS being your pets. Only time you take attacks is normally when you have FF as a secondary. You'll have enough slots/power or two to spare for it.  Only then, AOE to trigger aggro at you for your Bodyguard to spread out the dmg between you & pets. IF they even hit you, if you use Scorpion Shield, etc..

Wanna see how I run MMs, come on Excelsior and you can see what attack-less MM(as in no attack powers) Runs.

Thought I would share my current demon/thermal build......while no where near  defensively stacked as @JJDrakken and I do take a few attacks, what can I say I scrappermind my guys.......I do like the current build. The really good thing about MM's is that there really isn't a wrong way with them....well, unless you decide not to take the pets but thats crazy talk. The build shared by @JJDrakkenis really good and I can understand the reason for not taking any attacks, I've got a few MM builds that skipped attacks but the whip attacks for me really fit the build more than any other demon combo......maybe it's just a theme thing.

Lets be honest, ya'll don't care about the Demons, you just wanna whip shit... lol.

At end of the day, I bet that's 99% reason folks take Demons.  Honestly your best bet is to beg HC, like they did back in day for a Whip based attack power set.

I generally take 1 attack on my MMs for flavor.....I like to randomly hit stuff. My demon/thermal was a concept/theme build so a tew more attacks bit he's my exception. Whipping stuff, while fun....I cant see as a viable set and besides,  demons are naughty biys and need to be punished because without the punishment they wont know their overlord

Well, that too, but I also do like the demons (except for the infernal howling) - when both sets were new I made a Demon/Pain MM and you just have to take the whip attacks for someone with a Pain Domination secondary, right?

I (usually) skip the attacks in every other primary, though, so you could say that it might just be liking to whip things. 😈
