Dual Pistols / Martial build help

Hi forum team -

Below is an in-process rebuild of my proc-heavy DP/Martial blaster in the blaster forums. looking for input on tuning him up.

  • the build-up proc / proc'd out Supressive Fire is great and has a strong chance to trigger (per Nemu), bringing a way to get build up into a set that lacks it.
  • I had to look at 6-slotting the sustain because I've always had end problems.
  • I like the FF recharge procs as they really add up and help all the powers come back faster.
  • tactics is I think a must have for the +Perception and to-hit.
  • not a fan of Eagle's Claw due to animation time and theoretically better dps chain w/o it.
  • Don't like Piercing Rounds due to anim time.
  • Might give up or remove slots from Burst of Speed as it doesn't really seem to do much damage or proc much.
  • Was trying to keep 45% S/L at least but could go back to ~32% S/L/R to let a small purple soft-cap.
  • a lot of one-slot wonder powers kind of just placeholders if we move slots around (e.g., take em out of BoS).

Input appreciated.

Dragon's tail only has an 8 feet radius, I feel that martial isn't really a good melee blasting set if you are also going to skip eagle's claw because there isn't really any good incentive for you to get into melee. Burst of speed is cute but not a game changer as far as damage is concerned, and storm kick is fairly vanilla, and dragon's tail.... womp womp....

So, working off that angle why not just use the melee stuff you do pick as mules and focus more on ranged options?

Here's what I crafted. It stays on theme with what you are looking to do (I think). It's got a good density of force feedback and there are enough ACC bonuses and +to hit to make sure you can hit consistently, it also has all 3 -resist procs. A second proc monster hold + surveillance means you can do some stupid ST damage (more than usual for pure ranged DP builds) as well. And the invisible LRM Rocket is also meme worthy.

You can easily swap out munitions for something like flame mastery for more protection, but you know, gunz and stuff...

Thanks @Nemu. I will take a detailed look - some great ideas in there. I hadn't thought of going ranged-only ... i've been using storm kick and DT in the rotation and to trigger FF procs.

Not sure how I feel about being so far from 32% S/L def and only keeping 32% Ranged def.

If I can see a path to it maybe I'll go Flame Mastery and pick up bonfire.  Anyway more experimenting to do.

1 question:  I heard that in-game if you don't put the -RES procs as the last (most far right slot) proc/IO in a power, it affects when the game triggers the -RES (beginning of power or later).  I see in your MIDS you put the -RES procs as the first or 2nd slots in the power.  Is what I heard about in-game not true?  E.g., I thought I had to put the Fury of Glad -RES proc as the last slot in Hail of Bullets so that it triggers first upon firing the power (and then maybe affects the dmg ticks).

Cheers,

Hmm I have not heard of that claim about slot position affecting procs. Can you cite the reference?

I put them in as 1st or second because that's my thought process translated into the build. I know I want to reserve the -res IOs and the FF procs in those powers and those are the first things I slot.

In combat log procs will list in the order they are slotted, from right to left.

Everything happens on the same clock tick though, so as far as my anecdotal exploration of this nuance and Savage Leap could tell: putting -Res in the far right does not affect anything slotted into or the actual power itself.  Everything triggers at once, and any effects like -Res are applicable on the next power activated.

Edit: DoTs that start delayed are probably impacted.  Not sure on this one, and it might vary by DoT in question.  Either way, where the -Res piece is slotted won't make a difference in that case, it's still triggering on the single clock tick for each piece slotted, and if a power's DoT is subject to hitting after the -res is applied, that will happen in any slot in that power.

Personally, I've been right-justifying stuff like that in builds just for the sake of visual organization. 😛

Thanks  for the feedback Stych, that's good info.  I bet the in-game chatter (where I heard this) has to do with the combat log list order.   But maybe nobody tested it like you did.

If that's the case would it actually be better to put a damage proc into HoB instead of the -RES proc?  I mean, just more dmg to kill mobs rather than trying to lower their -RES for whatever attacks come next?

Welcome, and edited in some clarity/qualifications.  Mostly it was something I noticed while testing Savage Leap and Double-Hit, but that's another, longer story.  Savage Leap has neat quirks. 😛

No idea; chances are it is a good place for it, but I've never run DP far enough to say personally. 🙂

I weighed the alternatives - HOB will kill fodder so the -res is irrelevant, against +4s that don't die to the the nuke the -res will be useful, I'm also much more likely to use HOB than other PBAOE options against AVs/GMs, especially on a build that is not designed for melee range survival. Plus there are opportunity costs in putting that proc in other powers that disrupt my ability to slot the necessary sets/other procs.

I mean you could find a way to fit dragon's tail in but DAT 8 ft radius...

Current state of tweaks incorporating some feedback above.  Thoughts?

BoS is now a set mule.  Got to ~35% M / R def so 1 small purple will cap melee and ranged def.

Went into the Fire Mastery pool for the shield and the fast ST hold and the Bonfire.  What's the best accepted slotting for Bonfire?

Doesn't really feel like Martial brings much to the table being honest.

I guess my question is, what are you trying to do or achieve here with the build.

Not pitting build against each other. But my build is doing more DPS, Has quicker recharge and Defense capped all around. Your defenses get even less when HOB is turned off.
So thus the question above..

Doh! (/facepalm) ... I didn't realize HOB was giving +Def and left one.

  • I was trying to get to ~32% S/L/R def or 32% M/R def and then add in a damage shield from epic (vs. *always* taking Scorp Shield).
  • i was trying to keep the attacks largely proc'd out including the FF recharge proc and -RES where possible.
  • I was looking for a build that kept Storm Kick (with procs) as I heard it makes good DPS in a single-target chain (with Proc'd supressive fire and ES etc.).
  • I am not hung up on Eagle's Claw (the anim is too long for my liking) and Nemu convinced me to abandon DT due to short radius; i had been OK wth DT using BOS to port in and then DT's quick anim time, but I get his point.
  • I had to 6-slot Reaction Time for end as previously I've always had end issues on this DP/build.

I not a DPS guru but I assumed proccing would have better results than slotting complete sets. Your comments make me question that (vs. your build).

At a high level, recognzing this is more of a concept toon, trying to tune up my DP/Martial so it doesn't feel so second class to my Fire/* and even now Elec/* blasters.

Maybe I should reroll him as a Sent or Def, who knows.

If you want to operate from range then it's not surprising that you'd find martial brings little to the table. Martial is a mediocre-at-best set for blasters looking to operate from range. But, if you're comfortable blapping and it fits with the character concept, then martial is a solid choice because it is a top tier blapping set.

If you embrace blapping then you'll want DT in your build. You can use burst of speed to maximize how much value you get out of using DT, and using DT can keep your character significantly safer because if its knockdown (and the +recharge FF proc IO fits very nicely in DT). You'll then want to embrace alternating between using DT on the edge of crowds (when being in the middle is too risky) and heading right to the center of crowds to saturate DT with targets (when the risk of being there seems manageable). You can also joust with DT if you find that fits a given situation best.

If your character concept doesn't involve any martial melee attacks, then sentinel, defender, or corruptor probably work fine as a replacement for your DP/martial blaster. As another option, depending on the details of your character concept you might consider a "martial assault" dominator, which blends melee and ranged martial attacks with a control primary.

Good luck to you, however you move forward.

Thanks. That's exactly how I had been using BoS and DT, including using DT for the KD and to proc FF +recharge.  I will go back to the drawing board.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

This is where I'm at currently / been able to get to.  Seems to have 32%-33% Melee and Ranged def, with 31.2% S/L and 29% E/N.  So basically one small purple will soft-cap you for melee/ranged and close to it for S/L/E/N.  In addition, swapping into Fire epic brings the resistance up to 52% S/L, ~50%Fire, and 40% cold.    Plus you get Bonfire whose recharge will be helped by all the FF procs.

I don't love the BoS slotting but maybe it can apply the -RES proc sometimes.  I suppose I could pull one slot from BoS (leaving the -RES proc) and move a slot into Maneuvers to 3-slot Reactive Defenses including the scaling resistance proc?  You lose some Fire/Cold res (3.75%) but maybe the scaling resist is better even on a blaster if you don't get 1-shot by something?

I'm not knowledgeable enough about dual pistols to comment on that part of these builds. And, you've done well to reach the defensive goals you've outlined. The appeal of going for positional defenses definitely gets stronger with dual pistols, given how HoB boosts positional defenses by 10% when used. You can BoS into mobs, HoB to both nuke and boost defenses, then clean up with DT and bullet rain while defenses are still boosted.

Other feedback / suggestions below:

1. Unless you take the sorcery pool and melee core hybrid clarion looks like your most functional incarnate destiny pick. That means setting aside barrier core and rebirth radial, which are otherwise really solid destiny choices that would in most cases add quite a bit more to your character's survivability than clarion. If you run the P2W defensive amp full time, then naturally clarion isn't needed for most situations, especially with inner will in the build.

2. Mids shows eagle's claw as having noticeably better DPA than suppressive fire, with or without procs in the build. You can test this out by putting eagle's claw temporarily into the build in place of  bonfire. Put 5 superior blistering cold IOs into eagle's claw (get the SBC hold proc, it procs fairly often) and the hecatomb damage proc in the sixth slot. Then compare the DPA / DPS for suppressive fire and for eagle's claw. If you make this switch, then you can put the kinetic combat IOs into ki push and the hecatomb set (except the proc) into storm kick, with the FF +recharge proc in the sixth slot. Math it out and you'll realize that the damage lost from storm kick is still less than the gain from using eagle's claw over suppressive fire. You'd also get an extra 10% recharge this way, as well as better single target damage. Finally, eagle's claw recharges faster than suppressive fire, giving you a smoother single target attack chain.

3. As a partial substitute for super speed you can put a stealth IO into sprint. In many (although admittedly not all) situations that is enough stealth to allow you to run by mobs if you'd rather not engage them. You could then drop super speed, get vengeance, and put a LOTG into vengeance (moar recharge!). Also, vengeance is great in middling to mediocre PUG teams because usually somebody else's character will get defeated before your character and you can then softcap your defenses with vengeance.

4. Getting the scaling res IO into your build is a very worthwhile thing to do. One way to do that would be to replace the red fortune IOs in maneuvers with the scaling resist reactive defenses IO and the defense IO from the same set. You'll still get the 1.5% bonus to smash lethal resist, as well as 3 to 12% more resistances across the board, while giving up very little in defense to do it.

Food for thought. Your builds are still solid, overall.

Here's a rebuild taking your suggestions into account.  I had given up on EC due to the long animation time and corpse-blasting.  But hey why not try it again.  I kept procced Supressive Fire as it's nice at range and it should trigger the build-up proc, so opening with it could really help the damage from EC and maybe 1 other attack in the 5 sec window (including HOB).

Yeh I'm always stuck with Clarion.  I hate mez.  Once I build to Tier 3 or 4 I usually build out Barrier or Rebirth for TFs where Mez isn't that much of a pain like ITF or Tinpex etc.
