It would be dreamy to have the game run on a modern engine, unfortunately as I understand it, that is basically a complete rewrite.

I'm thinking more along the lines of using the existing game, which works, and has been largely updated for current systems and computers.

Using that as a baseline, drop the existing lore/canon, and come up with something smaller and different. Trim out some of the non-relavent costumes, zones, and powersets.

There's ~55 zones currently. Surely 10 or so could be cobbled together into a outdoor, city, or time period theme.

Basically the same concept as used with The Abomination in Dr. Kane's being a repurposed Adamastor.

It's not a trim job. It's an complete overhaul no matter what route you go. There's not a usable zone as is for a fantasy setting. Too many modern buildings in all of them except maybe the Hive? Matter of fact, the amount of fantasy only assets in the game is so small, you'd be left with barely enough for any kind of game at all. Why would anyone bother?

Hey now, turn that frown upside down.

I agree the buildings can be problematic for say viking or medieval times. The buildings could work for time periods that take place post WW2 and into the future.

There are large outdoor areas that are mostly natural and Circle of Thorns mission maps could be Fantasy thematic (without those pesky hall way torches).

While some might be a stretch and have areas with buildings. Maybe: Some of the trial maps, Cimerora, The Abyss, The Hive, Tunnels of the Trolls, Winter Forest, Echo Plaza, Eden, Cascade Archipelago, The Chantry, The Storm Palace, half of Nerva?

I'm in the camp with those saying they're here for the game engine, not for the genre.  If someone took CoX's game engine and dropped it into a pure fantasy setting, or a pure Sci-fi setting, I'd absolutely go play that game.  If they want to give us some animation upgrades, costume options and weapon skins to go with it, even better.  If you make a steady progression of content that takes 3+ months to work through while and still let me make progress playing in 30 minute blocks, you could keep me happy for a very long time.

Here's the thing, City of Heroes is old.

That said, there is a little something special here that companies spend ridonkulous amounts of money every year trying to find.

  • The character creator is a superstar.
  • Gaining abilities and tweaking those abilities is an interesting time sink.
  • Campaign variety (single mission, minor arc, major arc, trials, task forces, etc.).
  • Being able to assist another player.
  • Customizable bases.
  • The variety of archetypes and number of powerset combinations.
  • etc. (if you like, reply with what works great or even list terrible aspects)

Portions of CoH probably could be parsed and stand as a game all on their own.

  • Witches: A Reckoning
    • Witches, warlocks, holy persons, hunters and so on.
  • Dystopia: The Future Everyone Saw Coming
    • Cybernetics, mutations, power armor & mystery
  • Squad: Exponential force
    • MMs & other pet themed classes
  • Samuri
  • Gods Among Us
  • Space Future
  • Medieval Times
  • Ancient Heroes
  • Gangster

Any themes out there that could be imagined as a reskinned game. What would you keep and leave out. Imma curious.

I don't ever want to see the game make yet another starting zone for when toons start their journey. I have NO IDEA wtf the Live devs were thinking with gold side. Another zone that separates the already dwindling playerbase. I have no idea what was going through their minds. It was an absolute waste and may have been the death knell for CoX.

I liked the look of gold side and it had some cool ideas but there is no way we needed a pile of new zones that re-skinned a lot of what we had (caves, offices). And then they went with the tired old Praetoria angle. Like...wow...

How many versions of the same sig hero/villain did we need?! I absolutely disliked the theme and the entire implementation. Very poorly done.

It's too bad the Live team played it so safe and repetitive. Hopefully the HC devs can do better from here on out.

Anyway, I would never want to see another starting zone in this game. Not unless we had well over 10 000 regular players!

fair enough though was trying to discuss a separate effort reusing some of the mechanics in this game. not a new starting zone or set of zones.

While it would be awesome to see all of this games content within a new engine, which there is too many reasons why that is an impossibility.

I would really like to see something a bit more doable, which is a Hi-res texture upgrade. With a modern GPU/CPU the game runs very well at max setting across the board.  Upgrading some the textures would go a long way, without completely braking the bank. Many of the environment textures are fine as they are and could be left alone, but also many of them are down right horrible looking and could stand to be re-worked.  It would also be nice to se a rework of many of the original costume pieces, It is very obvious that the quality and complexity the costume pieces increased as the game aged. Many of the costume pieces that were released towards the end of the games original run, are of such higher design quality, that the older pieces textures look poor by comparison and look out of place when combined together. even more so when the game settings are cranked to max.
