Looking to build a tanky Crab

I've got a good amount of experience with VEATs but I never really messed around with Crabs (The backpack just bothered me too much in the Live days). Now that I'm ready to try it out, I wanna put together the toughest Crab I can manage for a decent price. I'm a budget builder so I try not to spend more than 20-40 million on any given build. I don't mess with purples or HamiO's. Nothing against them but I'm rarely running super difficult content so there's just no need.

 

My key question is, what powers do I need and which ones are skippable? I'd like to pick up the spider pets if at all possible, maybe even dive into Black Scorpion's pool for an extra one. I'd imagine that lends itself to a ranged playstyle as opposed to melee (Which is perfectly fine by me) but I'm not sure. Any advice y'all can provide is greatly appreciated 😁

Here's my hovercrabby, shes super tough/durable. She plays like a tough hover blaster. She has pets but they aren't quite perma. But these values are without any incarnate powers activated -

PS - you can skip either the ranged powers or the melee powers, the ranged are generally better. being a flyer will really cut down on your incoming damage as well. as far as budget builds, thats a bit tricky. I will see what i can put together for you but thats really tight, not sure how tough of a crabber you are going to get with that much. But i will see what i can do.

Another spider lover. Awesome. I've been spending the past few days revisiting my old spiders and taking advantage of the free respecs the devs showered us with to impart some recent things I've learned with IOs and builds.

What I've noticed with my 2 Crabs is:

1) you don't need to exert much effort to make them quite tanky. they'll easily go mid-level def/res with very little slotting. You can get creative with set bonuses to get your min-max fix.

2) you have SO many powers to choose from. Too many to be efficient as you'll run into slot allocation problems.  I've experimented with different power picks and so far, I can't seem to fit Fighting's Tough and Weave... not at the cost of other powers. I could barely double dip into Leadership Ass/Manu--with only 1 extra slot to spare for maneuvres. 

3) you have to "commit" to being a crabbermind. Unlike an MM, you don't have an efficient way to heal or even have all 6 pets up every time. for one thing, I had to focus my build on recharge, Lings CD is 10 and the bigger buggers are both 15mis. I was able to get them down to roughly 4 and 7 mins  each. They're up for 5 mins or so, so I almost always have 3 robo-bugs with me at any given time. To compensate for the heal, I instead played tankermind with the crab. built him to take aggro and damage because I can heal, but I can't heal my pets. Oh... and you can't order your pets around. they just go and do what and where they want.

Incidentally, they made changes with the Wolf Costume if you have the crab back pack. You don't get the snazzy chest armour anymore... just a wide strappy thing. =( Totally ruined one of my older toon's look.

Okay, here is a budget version of the build I posted, using it as a framework. I kept the "must haves" and put IOs into the rest. You still have good Defense and good resists, particularly for a flyer. You still have the same attack cycle too, so you can upgrade as you go. (I tried to keep it simple.) This build won't be soloing +4/8, but it should be fine on +2 or 3. As you upgrade you will get roughly 10% more defense and 20% more resistances. The biggest issue is that you might have END issues, so you can either take Cardio as an alpha or Ageless as a Destiny. I tend to favor the Muscled for Alpha and Ageless for Destiny.  Some like Agility as their alpha to help with perma-spider pets though if you want to go that route. Personally I perfer super-durable crabbys.

 

But this should be within 50-75mil price range, most of that coming from the special uni builds that are more or less required.

When my Crab was new and on a budget I did have a build that used pets. It was pretty similar to this. I didn't have any purple sets at the time, but I did feel that a few uniques were worth the merits.

The build runs capped ranged defense along with about 30-38% melee and AoE. Resistance to Smashing/Lethal is pretty good. Not quite comparable to my Khelds in Dwarf form but the layered protection should make up for the discrepancy. Both Spiderlings and Reinforcements have solid uptime but aren't perma, which is ok by me.

 

It's always been my experience that VEATs can be very End heavy so I tried to cram in as much recovery as I could manage. I'm still a little worried that the heavy costs on the grenades could come back to bite me if I'm spamming them during group content though.

What's the story with Infiltration, Stealth and Grant Invisibility? If the movement benefits of Infiltration are not too critical, I think I'd skip the Concealment pool entirely, put the Stealth IO in Sprint, and take Maneuvers, which will help you hit all your soft caps and give your pets and teammates defense as well.

 

You've got three Impervium Armor IOs for Psionic Resistance, and a couple more that give you a 2.5% recovery bonus but basically zero Damage Resistance due to Enhancement Diversification. If you took those five IOs and used them to 6-slot TT: Leadership with Gaussian's Synchronized Fire Control, you'd gain 2.5% to every positional defense along with assorted other bonuses and better accuracy for your pets. Is Psionic Resistance important? Sometimes, but Defense is more useful.

 

You're going to get merits as you advance so I'd strongly consider assembling a set of Superior Spider's Bite. It gives you 3.6% Max End, which is like a mini accolade (the Atlas Medalion is 5% Max End) and the 5% Melee Defense isn't bad either.
I like the new Warp IO set for Teleport which gives you a range bonus to all your powers and a 3% Endurance discount. Anything that improves range is especially good with Suppression.
If endurance is a big problem, you might consider taking four slots of Impervium Armor in Fortification and/or Tough since the 2.25% Max End is the real prize of that set.
You could also slot the Panacea +Hit Points/Endurance unique in Health.
And put some more slots in Venom Grenade!

 

Where would these extra slots come from? CT: Defensive, TT: Maneuvers and Weave are all over-enhanced to gain tiny amounts of Defense due to ED. You could recover four of those while losing basically no defense. TT: Maneuvers and Weave can be 3-slotted with LotG and CT: Defensive could go down to 2 slots, especially if your IOs were set to level 50.
I'm also not sure you're getting good value from 4-slotting Stamina. If you intend to run Infiltration with no end cost reduction, that's a big drain. I think I'd lose the run speed from Stamina to make Infiltration less of an endurance hog and you'll be more efficient overall.
