So, lately I've been tinkering with characters, making a bunch of new ones based on the X-Men.  Some are pretty obvious, but some are a problem... what AT and powers should they have?!  So, I thought I'd come here, and have a little fun discussing what ATs and powers we think the X-Men might have.  Now, I'm not as familiar with the newer X-Men.  Really, I kind of lost track around the time Longshot joined the team and they were operating out of Australia... so I'll just go as far as that.  Here's my list:

Professor X - Dominator (Mind Control/Psionic Assault)

Cyclops - Blaster (Energy Blast/Martial Combat) (yes, I know it doesn't come from his eyes, but we live in hope of new animations)

Iceman - Dominator (Ice Control/Icy Assault)

Beast - Brute (Martial Arts/Willpower)

Angel - Tanker (Super Reflexes/Street Justice)

Marvel Girl - Controller (Mind Control/Force Fields)????  Not sure about this one.

Havok - Blaster (Sonic Blast/Sonic Manipulation) (he SHOULD be energy blast, but the Sonic effects work for him)

Polaris - Controller (Gravity Control/Force Fields)

Nightcrawler - Stalker (Martial Arts/Super Reflexes)

Wolverine - Brute (Claws/Regeneration)

Banshee - Blaster (Sonic Blast/Sonic Manipulation)

Storm - Corruptor (Electric Blast/Storm Summoning)

Sunfire - Sentinel (Fire Blast/Fire Armour)

Colossus - Tanker (Invulnerability/Super Strength)

Thunderbird - Scrapper (Street Justice/Willpower)

Kitty Pryde - ???? (????/????) NO idea what to do with Kitty!

Rogue - ???? (????/????) Probably super strength and invulnerability for the Ms. Marvel powers... but the drain?

Psylocke - Scrapper (Psionic Melee/Ninjitsu)

Gambit - Blaster? (Fire Blast?/Martial Combat?) Hard to know what to do here, there's no ranged class with a staff.

Longshot - Tanker? (Super Reflexes/Martial Arts) Super Reflexes to mimic his "luck" power?

I could go into greater detail on my reasoning, but I'm interested to see what you guys think.  How would you create the X-Men?

I’d really want professor X as a controller, maybe re-flavored time manipulation (he does himself flavor his mind powers as time powers at times 😉 ). I guess night crawler could go dual swords as well.

Myself I really only played live during City of Heroes and City of Villains, not the last years. That’s where my feel for the game is for. So it really pains me to see heroes cast in villain archetypes 😉 I’d have e.g. beast as a tanker and wolverine as a scrapper. And professor X as a controller, as I said.

That’s all feel though 😉

Kitty'd definitely be an /SR or /Ninjitsu Stalker with Phase Shift, Ninja Run and a little miniature dragon vanity pet.
Martial Arts for the most part; but perhaps Ninja Blade in her Shadowcat persona?

90's Cartoon Rogue would be a Super Strength Tanker or Brute; with either Invulnerability or Willpower for her defensive powerset.
Mainstream comics Rogue would probably be a MartialArts/EnergyAura Scrapper instead (Energy Drain + Energize + Overload to represent the "Power Sapping")

Gambit is an Energy Blaster, with either a Martial Combat (he uses his fists a fair bit in the comics) or Ninja Training secondary (reskin a Staff instead of the Katana).
You could also rig him up as a Staff/SR Scrapper or Stalker, with the Force of Will pool (for Project Will and Wall Of Force) and Weapon Mastery (Exploding Shuriken).

Longshot I'd likely place as a Spines/SR/PsiMastery Scrapper or maybe an Arachnos Widow... (Spines = Daggers)

That or a Mind/Psi Dominator. Just make sure to give her /Fire Mastery for Rise of the Phoenix... 😸

Magick: broadsword/invuln scrapper

Edit: it occurs to me that modern Cable could be katana/sr with vanguard katana.

Storm: Storm/Storm Defender

Gambit: Scrapper or Stalker Staff/SR/Energy Mastery (Focused Accuracy, Physical Perfection, Energy Torrent)

Rogue: Brute SS or Dark Melee (life sapping)/INV/Energy Mastery (call up those Cyclops Eye Blasts)

Shadowcat: Scrapper StJ/SR with Phase Shift.

Longshot: StJ or MA/SR pick an AT

I'd say more likely energy aura, since he can absorb and redirect/utilize energy directed at him.

As for the others, some are too specific or niche to fit into the CoH ATs that need to be broader in their utility.  I mean, Archangel basically just has his wings and the quills/darts they can fire, (adamantium?).  Professor X is basically just mind control, but not anything relating to telekinesis, (Jean Grey would be closer to that than him).  Jubilee is like an energy or maybe radiation or a special case of luminous blasts from Kheldians, with like no secondary.  Shadowcat basically only has phase shift, but can also phase other things/people and disrupt electronics if she phases into/through them, but that's it.  Iceman would probably be an ice/ice sentinel with the ice mastery APP, (or some variant of ice/ice/ice/cold).  CoH can't really emulate Rogue's power stealing ability, but if we look past that, she's a super strength/invuln scrapper, (maybe a tanker or brute?).  Nightcrawler would basically just be a scrapper or stalker with heavy investment in the teleportation pool...

Oh but the exercise - the fun! - is trying to fit the characters into the molds as well as possible! In some cases archetypes can give us a meaningful representation through emphasizing what the flavor and core of a character is, in other cases the archetypes can represent the fighting style or powers rather well while maybe not covering the flavor entirely. I’d call nightcrawler the second case there. I just read a comic where he takes on a real brute of a monster through as he himself states it - his agility and ability to dodge (super reflexes?) and his martial arts. He didn’t even teleport more than once for fear of not landing in a safe spot in the dark forest. A clear scrapper in that sequence, as in many others. But of course CoH can’t do justice to his teleportation powers.

super reflexes

I think an argument could be made for ninjitsu, only he skipped the self healing & caltrops powers for some reason, and the blinding powder and smoke flash are uniquely linked to his teleportation ability, (BAMF's into a cloud of smoke and all that).  Also he's like martial arts + broadsword, (using a rapier weapon model).

Quite so!  This is why I made the Angel a Tanker.  Back in the day, when the X-Men fought their enemies, Angel's task was to get the attention of the enemy and avoid their attacks while the rest of the team engaged.  To me, that's a Tanker.  I make most of my speedsters that way too, their job is to harass and occupy the enemy while the team takes them down.
