I know there is a way to complete missions automatically and then you can't do it for three more days. How do I do it with this mission though? I can't figure it out. The only option the NPC gives me is to abandon the mission then pick it up again.  I already tried making a different mission the 'selected task' which did not help. I don't want to do the mission (it is too long and tedious) but I don't want to abandon it because it is the last part of a storyline mission and I want the rewards.

You don't mention the contact, but there are a few mission which I have never been able to auto-complete, despite having not auto-completed any in the character's life, let alone in the past 3 days.
One example is Tina MacIntyre's first mission where you have to tackle the psychic clockwork king.

It may very well be that nobody can complete the last mission of any story arc - I've never tried to, so I don't know.

Which contact?
There are only 2 that come to mind as being very unpopular, and that would be Skipper Legrange's "Stop the Ritual" (don't let 30 fir bolg escape)  and Buck Salinger's "Stop takeover of Salamanca" where you prevent the red caps from destroying the henges in the cemetery.

The thing is - as I understand it - folks are able to auto-complete those two, because they have said so in these forums.

So, I'm super unclear why you can't auto-complete it. Who's the contact and story arc? Maybe I can do the arc myself and see if I can auto-complete it and get this issue to repeat itself.

The mission NPC is Andrea Mitchell in Talos Island. The mission is 'Defeat Archos and his coven'. The story arc is 'The Wheel of Destruction'

The problem is I have to run around a very large open area looking for a few objects and I also have to kill a boss.  Trying to find everything I need for this mission is just plain boring. I don't like these kinds of missions. It is also timed, because of course it is.

Timed missions for the most part, used to not be able to be auto completed.  That mostly got changed, but there might be something about that mission though.

Missions that grant a badge, some end-of-arc missions, and some random missions can't be auto-completed.

If you could auto-complete it, the option would be there when you talk to the contact after you have the mission.

That particular mission is timed, you can't autocomplete timed missions.  If it is that odious to you, you can simply let time run out.  You can even play other missions while the clock ticks.  Doing that though may not award you the temp power and MAYBE even the arc xp bonus (maybe it does).  It is the last part of an arc so you will need to address it either by completing it or letting the timer run out.

My 2 inf, it looks pretty easy based on stated mission objectives.

  • Close portal, 4 artifact pieces to find

sounds like 5 total glowy clicks to me.  I do imagine you have to beat Archos as well.  If you're not stealthy you can create "Grant Invisibility" from an SG buff empowerment statoin.  It won't give you full pve invis but will make it so you can run around the map safely if you don't get too close.  For clicking glowies you will probably need to defeat whoever is close to it (if any).  Someone may say "just consume purple insps" but if 3-4 BP are attacking, someone is apt to get a hit in, just defeat them.

I haven't done this since live so I don't remember specifics, I do remember it was popular for BP mask hunting once up a time.

Ok, I let the timer run down. I did get reward merits but I am not sure what I missed out on in regards to other rewards.

I also hate outdoor hunt missions.

If I have to complete one, I try to form a team. Having more players means more odds that we spot the glowies. And I can just sit back and kill stuff while the team looks for things. Plus if I have to suffer, some other people should have to, as well.

These are my favorite! I've done so many, there are seldom any spots they hide I don't know about. Although, there is one where an NPC is on the roof (Not Nightstar) and that one always takes me a bit longer. But most don't last any longer than any other mission - and if I'm in the mood to kill all...there's a LOT of them to kill.

I can see where having the spawn points memorized would make it a breeze, yeah. I unfortunately don't, and finding those last couple civilians on a city map can be a real chore (at least glowies make a noise!).
