I'm planning to make a Sci Fi themed doctor.  I plan to use Emp and either BR or DP.  I'm not sure which is better for a Def.

I don't think that BR has many good secondary effects, so I wonder if it would be good for a Def.

I plan to mostly group for TFs and other group missions.  I only PVE.  I don't PVP.

Which do you think is best?

One critical difference is that DP plays in melee as where BR plays at range. Emp plays fine at range, so I would lean BR. DP is also more AoE based as where BR is more ST based and then spreads into AoE. It has -Regen, so if something needs to be dead, it certainly helps. Since Emp doesn't offer -Regen, this can be a nice add.

I agree with Without_Pause's comment.  And, from an RP perspective, BR's -Regen can be considered a result of your medical training--knowing just where to shoot someone to help "disable" them.  While not everyone likes BR's animations, I find the set effective for a defender.  Of course, I paired it with Traps/, so it makes for a different style of play.

There's synergy as well with dual pistols especially using chem rounds that reduce a target's damage output, as that reduces the need to heal your team/self. Also Empaths have 3 pbaoe powers that affect the self and any allies smart enough to move into melee range of you.

I used to main an EMP/nrg defender for years (PvP) so jousting RAs is a thing, I used to do it all the time. If you're willing to be mobile enough to joust, then I'd say beam rifle perhaps. Otherwise I'd probably go with DP.

BR or DP

BR, obviously.
Waving TWO sonic screwdrivers at your enemies would look EXTRA ridiculous...

I would roll up a BR/DP Defender on the test server first to see which playstyle you prefer. An SO only quick build will work to get a feel for them. More important than secondary effects or mathematics imo, as you need to enjoy playing it.

DP does look cool and procs out very well though.

You can pop a build in Mids and import it to Beta. There's no need to just try out an SO build.

Heal them with nanomachines by using a better support set than Empathy, such as... anything else in the game.  Color Pain Domination green or something.

That would require time doing a build and importing it, but yes you could do that. Auto enhance will work just to get a quick feel for each also.

The only time taken would be to do the build. Slotting is practically the same time as slotting an SO build. I would many times over test an IO build over an SO one.

I did not mean test a build but test the animations and playstyle. Some sets are faster and some are PbAoE rather than ranged AoE etc. So why take the time to do a build when you are undecided which you may like more?

Can you auto enhance an IO build that has been ported over?
