I was hoping to find a plant/kin build to get inspired by but no luck so far.

I loved Plant as a dominator back on Live and I loved my Fire/Kin (was my 1st 50). Fire/Kin is a pretty obvious synergy, but I don;t want to reroll one.

I think Plant/kin should work too? Seeds make it safe to get into melee for Fulcrum shift, although Plant has no aura like hotfeet.

As an alternative Plant/Storm seems like a good choice too. I understand the hate for Storm controllers on team, although I successfully used a fire/storm on teams to great effect back in the day too.

So I'd love advice for or against Plant/Storm or Plant/Kin, build suggestions, and strategy advice.

My main was Kin on live. I essentially ODed on the powerset as I think it is my favorite or at least was on live. I even have a level 41 Elec/kin controller now. I just feel like I'm over Kin. I think /storm works better for Plant as it makes a riskier power set safer in vast part due to Seeds. This is also true for /kin mind you. The tree also patches a whole for /storm since it lacks a self heal. In terms of today's meta, /storm offers more interesting IO options over /kin as well. I had a Earth/storm on live and the thing was a beast even with common IOs. While I know Plant/storm might now the same amount of control*, the idea of sacrificing some of it for even more damage is incredibly tempting. Yes, I rolled one, but it is only like level 10.

I don't think a Plant/kin is a bad build. Anything which can do AoE containment and damage cap is alright with me. It is more like Plant/kin is really good. Plant/storm is just...interesting, and I gravitate towards that these days.

* I concede the idea that Earth/storm might be more control than needed anyway, but I played on PUGs who felt like they could play stupid knowing I had their back. Team wipes were rare.

Almost sold on Plant/Kin 🙂 I'll see if I can find a couple builds to figure out how people are using it.  In particular I need to remind myself how hurricane works in conjunction with group immob.

Posted (edited)

I'm currently running a Plant/Kin and it's a VERY strong combo. The only downside to this build is the underwhelming single target damage.. the only way I can reliably solo GMs is with the t4 longbow lore pet.

Soloing +4/8 my usual attack chain is:  Creepers -> Seeds -> Roots -> FS/SP -> SB on creeper vines -> Roots spam until clear

I also have the Energy Font IO slotted into roots. They don't do a lot of base damage but they can be SB'd/Fulcrum shifted and when you regularly have 3-5 out at a time, they DO make a difference.

Here's the build I'm using:

- FS up every 15 sec, SP up every 7sec

- Perma Carrion Creepers

- Close enough to S/L cap, 34% ranged defense

- You can swap out inertial reduction for siphon speed but I don't think it's necessary with 190% global recharge

Here is my build.

Some notes: I took Hover (vs Combat Jumping) for thematic reasons.  CJ is superior.  I'm fine with running around and using a jetpack.

I stack Unbounded Leap Stealth (Sprint) and the Stealth Power to create a stealthable character.

I moved Villain side for Scorpion Shield.

I wanted the spider, again for thematic purpose.

This build has the Spiritual Incarnate for recharge.

The only possibly argument I could make against plant/kin is that its pet is ranged, and will thus benefit less reliably from fulcrum shift. Plant is strong enough with all its other tricks that it is not a major issue.

Plant/Storm would more reliably leverage the pet, and of course Storm is more amazing than ever these days.  Since it's a controller, both sets will solo reasonably well late levels.

Both Storm and Kin are top tier support sets in general - just pick what you are inspired to play!
