If you're going to play at the highest level in the game...
BlackSpectre replied to Oklahoman's topic in General Discussion
You mean you can't find mission teams or people to play with? It is an issue for me as well sometimes. For me, it's timing. I usually only have a limited time to play, between 7-10 PM PST. So although I'm more than happy to meet new people and make new friends, peeps aren't always logged in at the same time. In addition, I have a group of 3 regular friends who log in every now and then. When they do, I need to go help my SG... so it puts a cramp in making new friends sometimes. In all my years of playing, no one has ever offered to help me go help my SG. Meh. Worse, those 3 friends sometimes lure me into playing other games... gasp! Again, limited time. During the summer I have more time, but I'm also doing things like going on vacation, tackling big projects I've put on hold, and a lot of other more mundane stuff. The more I think about it, the more it seems this little app by @Michiyo would really help here... you could set it to look for certain names of players (not sure you could search for global names though... -
If you're going to play at the highest level in the game...

Wow! What a great idea, Oakey! The best method I've found to wake up players who have been passed the league star by the BAF bug is: 1. /macro "PASS BACK STAR" "tll $name, PASS THE LEAGUE STAR BACK TO ME PLZ. TYPE '/LML $NAME' TO MAKE ME LEADER." The /TLL command automatically sends a tell to whoever is the league leader... so no need to find out who the leader is, right click, or type their name. Fast. Bam! The "type /LML" bit helps out players who, for whoever reason, can't find you in the league list (and there are many). 2. Wait 5 minutes (until right after killing all the bots). 3. /macro "Spam it!" "tell $target, PASS THE STAR TO ME PLEASE" Spam this 6 times (8 will get you banned for 2 min). I realize that the original tell I send is a lot of words. Spamming it will make it look like a wall of meaningless text. For the reading impaired, you need to go more simple. Also you need to tell them who to give the star to, "to me", don't skip that step... yes, I know, but so many players ask... 4. Wait until after Nightstar is dead and then spam it again. 5. If still no response, just give up. Finish out the BAF, but if you're going to do another run... 6. Tell the league to disband after this run, and send you a tell to get invited to the next BAF run. Disband and reform. It's at this point, when players are abandoning the league like rats from a sinking ship that the severely clueless player usually wakes up. They see all the players quitting the league in droves. Their first thought is "What's going on???". It's then that they start checking their chat, find all the messages asking them to pass the star, see your message telling the league to disband... and often they'll send you a tell apologizing. I'll reinvite them at this point if they want to do another run. Otherwise, with no apology, I tend to avoid inviting them. Half the time they're too embarrassed to stick around anyway. Dealing with a clueless player who doesn't read text is kind of the price of leading BAFs. I don't get upset, nor frustrated. I know exactly the steps to take, and what to do if they're unresponsive. This is only for BAFs though. There's not much a single, clueless player can do to make the BAF run fail. At worst, you'll just disband and reform. But for other trials where all players need to be on the same page or the trial will fail... yeah, that can get frustrating. It would be really nice if, one of these days, the devs fixed the bug that makes the star change hands after loading into the BAF. Who knows? Maybe if they tackle that they'll fix the other big bug that can make players wait indefinitely for the green button to pop up if the league is less than 24 peeps. Or the other bug that scrambles the league if it's locked. I bet they're all related... -
Need Help With a Template
BlackSpectre replied to BlackSpectre's topic in Unofficial Homecoming Wiki's Forum
Thanks guys. Wow. A hard limit. Now I know. M, if it becomes a problem, or if you think it's best, I can use {{bindcommand}} for slash command pages instead and link each command manually one at a time. The IfExists parser function is just more convenient is all. The last thing I want is for it to cause trouble. This group of 105 commands is my first real attempt to grab all the commands that can be used as command line parameters. I'm hoping I have most of them, but the number is likely to increase. Anyway, let me know. And thanks again. -
I've created this template: https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Template:Launchparam It seems to work great using it a few times on small pages. However, using it many, many times in a large page seems to break it. For example, https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/List_of_Command_Line_Parameters . If you scroll to near the bottom you'll see "vis_scale". the "vis_scale (Slash Command)" page exists, and yet the template is acting as if it doesn't exist. I suspect I've hit some sort of limit when using templates, substitutions in templates, or the IfExists parameter. Not sure. The template is a duplicate of the {{slashcommand}} template (which has been used over 600 times without issue in the List of Slash Commands page) except I've added the IfExists parameter. I don't know how to fix this or where to go from here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There are so many great ideas for the game… ranging from story, to visual, to technical. It’s crazy. I have recently begun to think about what would need to be done, and the amount of work and expertise needed is tremendous. So with limited resources, the devs prioritize. #1 priority are things that hinder gameplay. After that, new power sets. And improving powers. After that, new items for SG bases. And I believe that the Kallisti Warf is currently being worked on to come alive, including contacts and story arcs. It’s just a lot. Keep suggesting things though. Maybe one day it will raise in priority and your post would be there to provide additional depth and ideas. You never know. 😀

Hi, M. Please let us know when we can start editing and adding to the wiki. I'm worried that a "restore" might just wipe out what I just did. BTW, what was the issue you were trying to fix?

Slash Command Improvements: Abbreviations and More...
BlackSpectre replied to BlackSpectre's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Right. If I were making the decision, I would make it /close, but I left the details unsaid. 🙂 -
A collapse in the market also lowers the game playability
BlackSpectre replied to Diantane's topic in General Discussion
That's not bad. At best it's just as good as fire farming! But can you maintain that level of reward merit gain throughout all levels 1-50? Can you do it on demand whenever you want like you could with farming? Also, if that's true, then the OP wouldn't have any issues. Apparently they only need 12 mil inf for their toon. 100 merits will get you about 20 mil. -
Is the Homecoming Wiki down? Can't access it.
BlackSpectre replied to BlackSpectre's topic in Help & Support
I have not! Didn't know it existed. Thank you, M! -
Thanks a bunch! I used that to search for the title and came up with a link where you don't have to join anything or give them any personal info (bogus or otherwise) https://oiipdf.com/download/city-of-heroes-rpg-quickplay-pack That's pretty awesome, Lemming! 🙂

Abbreviations for the following commands would definitely help with making binds and macros fit within the 255 character limit: Targeting commands Power Execution commands Inspiration commands monitor_attribute stop_monitor_attribute bind_load_file bind_load_file_silent window_scale (We already have a shorter command for /window_show (/show), why not one for scale and hide? ) window_hide Of all of these, the targeting commands, monitor attribute commands, and bind_load commands are needed the most. The rest are just QoL improvements. The Rebirth server actually did this for most of these commands https://wiki.cityofheroesrebirth.com/wiki/Game_updates/2023-02-26 New Commands stop_monitor_attribute_all - A missing command that would close the entire monitor attribute window. auto_reply_invite - Invite the player who last sent you a private tell to your team auto_reply_invite_league - Invite the player who last sent you a private tell to your league team_select_next - A missing command that would select the next teammate on your team team_select_prev - Select the previous teammate on your team select - A missing command that selects another player on your team by name select_global - Select another player on your team using their global name (useful for regular friends who switch characters frequently) A word about "select": There are multiple uses, use cases, and situations in which the ability to select a player, rather than target them, is preferred. It hinges on the differences between target and select. Basically, target is line of sight and has a limited range. Select is not. The most common use would be for single target support powers such as heals, buffs, mez protections, etc. Whether it only works for players in a team or also off of a team is discretionary. Since all the other select commands are team based, I'd probably stay with that theme... but it might be worth considering broadening out the command to be able to select anyone, on of off the team.

A collapse in the market also lowers the game playability
BlackSpectre replied to Diantane's topic in General Discussion
Using reward merits to purchase a commodity to then sell, and in turn to bankroll your COH endeavors is... inefficient. In one hour, how many reward merits can you make? Maybe 5? That will buy you 1 enhancement booster from the merit vendor, which translates into 900k-1.3 million inf. In that same hour I can take my fire farmer and make 20 million inf. That's on average 18x more than you make in the same amount of time! Eighteen times, man. That means you could bankroll 2 toons before you'd have to farm again for more moola. Hell, that's not even the most efficient way to make inf. When I want to make inf, I take 15 minutes and use my reward merits and influence to buy enhancement converters. Then I buy a bunch of cheap IOs from the auction house. Then I convert the cheap IOs into pricey IOs. Up on the market they go! The next day I check back into the auction house and I have made 100 million influence. Yippie!! That's 360x more than you make in the same amount of time. In 10 days I can make 1 BILLION inf. 1 Billion inf can last you an entire year of playing COH without ever having to make more influence, longer if you don't trick out your level 50s. And even longer if you're frugal and smart about spending. Total amount of time spent to do that? 2 hours, 30 min spread over 10 days... which then enables at least 355 days of carefree leveling and alt-ing! I'm not going to lie. This does take some time and work to setup. It's 15 minutes per day once I have everything set and running smoothly. The first thing you need is at least 100 million inf. That will give you enough to buy what you need, and then sell to make enough profit to continue buying and selling. To get my first 100 million inf, I fire farmed. I should mention that you can make even more inf fire farming if you sell players spots on your team as you farm. People are willing to pay for XP (and incarnate salvage drops using the mission arc in Dark Astoria). At first, I'm not about making more influence. Instead my goal is to sell more items at a certain profit point (ideally between 2-5 million inf per item). Once I'm able to sell enough every day, I then focus on increasing my stash of inf. 10 days later I'm done... if I want to be. It can be kind of fun doing this actually, but I don't want to be a hog and I want to leave the market to make room for others to make the influence they need. Once I had passed 7 BILLION inf... I mean, how much more do you need??? Now I bankroll my entire SG. I give each of them about 1 billion inf each throughout the year. Why? Partly because they have a lot less time to play than I do, but also they just never took the time to learn how to make inf. So I'm elected... the lazy bastards! LOL Meanwhile, I support the rest of the Homecoming community by selling every piece of salvage and every recipe that my toons get for 1 inf. That helps players who are struggling with cash problems, and helps other players by letting them buy low so they can sell high and make some $. So anyway, I hope this helps. You can search for influence-making guides here at the forum. There are many. There's absolutely no reason to be flustered over how little inf you have... not when you know how to make inf. 🙂 -
Any chance you could link to a copy? 🙂

The Masters of BAF: A Guide for Leaders and Players
BlackSpectre replied to BlackSpectre's topic in Guides
Pretty much unlucky, yes. Staying 10 feet in-between the buildings and staying on one side or the other offers you protection from one out of two towers. It's not perfect, but it is safer than staying in the middle. That said, the incarnate power Barrier ( a lot of defense) or heals works very well here. The ideal is to have a tanker take the brunt of the fire from towers but it doesn't always work out that way. Random chance. -
So when devs and GMs say it's better to contact them on Discord than at the Homecoming forums... how do we do that? Should we look for a voice chat being hosted by one of them, or just PM them on Discord rather than here? Also, is it better to contact them on Discord because they're logged into Discord more frequently because they're playing COH and voice chatting with friends? Just trying to get my head wrapped around the whole Discord thing...

Good suggestion. I was thinking about this exact thing today and concluded that the warning will likely change after I have researched, tested, and written up a new and complete list of launch parameters. All of the “safe” commands will be in a “working” list, while the unsafe ones will be in a “non-functional” list and I’ll put a warning in each parameter’s description page that needs it. Therefore the warning in the command line parameters page may not even be needed when it’s all done. That said, I’ll go ahead and change the color and underline it. Didn’t know about underline for color blind folks. Neat suggestion. Nope. Not yet at least. It’s likely that the most used launch parameters will be those that change graphics settings. If you look at any graphics related slash command page at the wiki you’ll see a navbox at the bottom of the page with all of the other working graphics commands. I’ve colored the most used of those purple, and the working graphics commands are likely safe. That might help for now at least. I’ll have a much better idea of which parameters would be the most used (and most useful) after I’ve tested all of them. It might take a while though. Looks like there's over 100 different parameters to look at and write up. Good news is I have a lot of free time opening up over the next month. 🙂 P.S. There is a short list of launch parameters Here That is all there is at the wiki right now, and is the best list I’ve found so far… which isn’t saying much. I’ve been looking through the game code to get more. There are players out there who know a lot more about launch parameters than I do, I’ve stumbled across one post whose OP gave a lot of useful know-how on a few commands. Wish it was easier to find posts about parameters.

Oh wow! -usetexenvcombine is a command line argument and NOT a slash command! No wonder I couldn't see that it did anything! Thanks for this!

Hi ATC, Good find! That little quirk is caused by NOT closing the Options window before you use the slash command. If you use the command while the Options window is open, nothing will change. I'll mention it in the wiki. Slash commands sometimes circumvent or even conflict with the graphical user interface. Although the goal is to have them linked, the game code and the GUI are really two separate systems. Because of this, I've always closed the Options window if I was changing any settings. Didn't even think that someone else wouldn't. So thanks for catching this!

What does your "macro toolkit" for new characters look like?
BlackSpectre replied to UltraAlt's topic in General Discussion
I have a set of common macros stored in a text file that I load into every character... $$macroslot 53 " 8 Team Select Next" "teamselect 1$$bind_load_file /binds/teamselect2.txt" ^^This is for easily checking to make sure everyone on my team is actually with my team and not with another team. Useful when running Trials in large leagues. It's a rotating "text macro." Macro SI "enterbasefrompasscode si-7230" macro "Edit Base" "editbase 1$$angle_snap 0$$grid_snap 0$$room_clip 1" macro "Invite 3 Friends" "get_local_invite globalname1$$getlocalinvite globalname2$$getlocalinvite globalname3" macro Hosting "LFG Hosting lvl $level $side mission team, pst" macro LFG "LFG Lvl $level $side $archetype LFT" Macro "Global Name" "getglobalname $target" Macro AFK "afk I'm AFK at the moment...$$startchat" I also have a Custom Window on every character that has both macros and pop menus. It houses a myriad of system settings among other things. Here's some pics... -
We have Lockdown for Holds and Coercive Persuasion for Confuse, why not one for Disorient? It would make the disorient/stun powers much more useful. And I might even take a few for a change... The new IO doesn't even have to be part of a new set. Just make one from a current set a proc. In practice, I tend to avoid most disorient powers. They typically only effect minions, and frankly my AOE attacks take care of the minions quickly. It's the same reason I tend not to get sleep powers (hey! while we're talking about it, why not a +2 mag proc for sleep powers too?). Anyway, every single time I've been faced with choosing a disorient power, I've thought the same thing "If only there was a way for it to affect lieutenants or bosses, I'd totally take it! Dang."

I would really like the door found in many missions on the praetorian side... the door that actually slides open and shut... or a door like it... that works.

What about clients running on Macs? Good idea to use diagnotics client, or no?
