….. so, there are some very good costume artists in CoH.  I an not one.  I even casually know one or two.  But I do not compliment unless it is deserved.

Some of these folks either hit random or they have the fashion sense of someone dressing for a comic con while on a three day drunk…

I may be both... or one of those  I recently got TPed to the mission door on a  redside PUG and the teleporter said "what the hell did I just TP?!" when I arrived.

... level 1 characters. Name camping is a real thing.

Thank you for the info, I always appreciate hearing from you.  Level 1 makes a lot more sense than PLed level 50s.

Now the fun question: how come Devs don't do something about that?  😃

How do you handle people being toxic at you specifically as a defender?

For any of that gate keeping nonsense: distance, one-star note them, block them.  Life is so much better!

Honestly, I can think of one, maybe two occasions where a name I wanted wasn't available on the first try.

Same, but I guess it comes down to how one defines "good name," there's a lot of assumptions baked into that.

That said, I would really like to hear from a dev on this too, because the idea of someone devoting all the time and effort to PL a handful of toons repeatedly to 50 just to names-it to annoy people seems really unlikely:

    • Did they dual-triple-quadruple box themselves?  Think of the time needed to set up all those separate accounts right there.
    • Or did they let them door sit on someone else's farm while they otherwise played?  That seems too slow.
    • What's a "good name"?  How did they determine what you think is a "good name"?  How few "good names" do you think there are or can be?
    • How'd they generate the list of "good names"?  Like say they pick "_____ Darkness" as a "good name" (not even going into where they got that one too); did the troll(s) sit down and think up a lot of possible versions by themselves (more time spent now), or maybe run a "random adjective generator" and then plug those in?  If one came out "Unacceptable Darkness" is that "good" or not?  More time spent making decisions.
    • Moving more quickly by bypassing making any costume or real power picks (to save time of course), still think about how long it would take to make a new character and then get them to an AE building in another zone.
    • Did they make them all brutes or whatever AT choice that's easiest to click on?  That would certainly show up for the devs, skewing the numbers.
    • And think about how many people played Live vs. are here on HC, I bet Live population was much larger overall, across the years, so this name grabber would really need to be working even harder to make a dent/mess for our smaller group.
    • Like cornering the market or creating a new account to come scream profanities in char before getting banned again, how long do you think they'd really keep at it all?

Maybe I'm 100% wrong and there really is a small cadre of a-holes who hate HC or are just trolling for the lulz, but this is a lot of effort for not great return.  Trolls are small-minded people who'd lose interest fairly quickly, seems to me, because this wouldn't provide the instant gratification of personally, instantly seeing the anguished and angry cries of the trolled.  That's why that one guy or two kept making new accounts to comer yell all-caps racist stuff in chat, but how long did he last?

Occam's Razor.  The idea feels like conspiratorial thinking to me.

I'm not a sociologist so I can't explain the pathology behind it, but there are people in this game that have made hundreds, if not thousands of characters for no other purpose than to lock up popular names, simply because they can. They derive some sort of perverse pleasure from knowing they have something other people want that no one else can have. There is one here in the forums who openly boasts about not only doing this, but also powerleveling them all to 50 so they are immune to the name release policy, should it ever be implemented.

I wish I was making this up, and that people like this didn't exist, but here we are.

Not to sound too flip about this, but citation needed.  And that one saying they're doing so doesn't hold too much water, it's easier to troll the forums than spend the time doing that.  Heck, why not report such a person too?  I'm just not convinced, sorry.

  6. Dom End is often a problem until you've reached perma-Dom, when you'll probably be able to fill up with that juuuust as it's starting to run out.  So if you're not building towards your insane-o levels of recharge yet, that alone can make a big difference for you.  Even with perma-Dom, soloing can go slower so I don't build to Domination as quickly, which means I might have to start popping blues.  I have found that Doms tend to only really feel like they're starting to bloom fairly late - which makes it all worth it for me, but of course YMMV.

And then there's also slotting the usual mix of procs in Health and Stamina to help fuel you (Panacea, Performance Shifter, etc.), do you have all those in your build?

Yeah.  A lot of so-called triple-A games could take a lesson from this launcher.  Sure, some launchers out there are great, but some are just shockingly awful.

True of all software, really.  Some of the stuff I have to deal with at work really should be designed for the pig-stupid people (cough cough) but was apparently instead designed BY them.

If you're ever hating for cash, just yell out in broadcast or local chat and say "I need to upgrade my SOs but I can't afford it. Does anyone have any SOs or inf to spare?" You're likely to get a ton of generous responses. 🙂

Every time I see someone in chat spamming to doorsit, I keep pondering making them some offer like "If i give you 50 mill right now, will you stop spamming, and swear off farming for a week?"  XD

Solo i run default: +0/x1, AVs are EB.  I do not enjoy farming but i can roll in this forever.

    Thirding this.

I don't often solo, and when I do it tends to be running MA stories (I once started trying to farm some tips with am MM just to have something to do, but that was dull).  MA custom designed foes can be pretty deadly, so to play it safe and not end up exasperated, I keep it low, usually.  I have once or twice walked out of one thinking "well that was almost boring" and so inched upped the level, or the team size metric, just to add a little more work to everything - that really depends on which toon I'm playing though.

    ... Council ...

My fully-kitted-out characters don't have any more difficulty soloing them than before other than that they take longer to kill (which isn't interesting when that's not attached to real danger or tactical responses -- and with the transformations, revives, etc. they can take a long time to kill).

I'm pretty sure that's the exact plan there.  Much like Freakshow who rez and then have to be fought again, it just slows down the steamroller a bit, mostly.  Like with the Freakshow rezzing-buff, this is all pretty much OK by me.

  11. Sometimes things just go south.

A team led by that 50 may have only sub-15th levels with him and the difficulty is set too high for them, or maybe it turns out that the foes you face have that one attack that finds the hole in your armor.  Or just the various idiocies listed above too - mix and match for extra fun!

as far as locking old threads goes, how long before there are more locked threads than unlocked ones?

This is what I was getting at with mentioning "deleting" - seriously, how long would we have to hold on to locked threads?  I think you have to address that if you starting locking threads after whatever deadline you set.   How long before the subforums are more locked threads than not, and why would you want to hold on to every locked thread in perpetuity?

ETA: you can downvote sure, but I would like to hear actual answers or discussion of the points I raised.  Please!  I'm interested t hear them.
