  1. Aren't there like...two hundred different enemy groups already? Sure, lots and lots are underused or underrepresented on TFs/SFs (looking at you, Council with your FOUR TFs while my beloved Carnies have ZERO), but I definitely don't think we need more. Hell, Gold side stuff added like 50 groups by itself.

I am not a fan of discord, but it's an incredible tool. I have ZERO desire to chat with other players and crack jokes or get to know anyone. I'm here to play a game and pass some time. If I wanted to be social, I'd call or visit friends.

Please show us on the doll where the "multiplayer online" portion of MMORPG hurt you. There's social anxiety and then there's just being a jerk. If Discord (or TeamSpeak, or Ventrilo, or Skype, or whatever else has been around since Paragon first got us going; we used Vent on Pinnacle to coordinate Abandoned Sewer Trials) is offered as a team-coordination *tool* and not made mandatory, then I don't see any issues. If the leader(s) don't want to be heard, I'll read your scripts for you. I'm a 36-year-old man and I'm 15-plus years removed from anybody giving me shit about my global name.

If you don't want to chat or make friends, then don't say a damn word and listen to instructions. I'm looking at it as a "use all available tools for success" thing, rather than excluding a powerful tool. It's about accessibility, like closed captioning or having someone using ASL so more folks know what's going on.

Thanks for this. I had this exchange just the other day with someone who had a different reaction to my LFG posts:

So, your recognition was well timed. 🙂 I appreciate you and everyone who takes a second in game to say "thanks for hosting." It helps to drown out people like the person above and keeps me wanting to log back in.

I sincerely wonder sometimes why people are like that. What they get out of being an entirely unnecessary douche.

  4. So I rolled a Poison/Rad. I hate healing, I hate having to target allies, and now I'm in love with this combo after being able to hold my own going off by myself through most of a full-team Citadel (granted, it's +0 but I'm a *defender*).

My main issue, though, is I have no idea how to slot it. At all. What am I building toward? Positional DEF? S/L Res? Regen somehow? I feel like I have both too many and way too few slots to use effectively.

My first Defender 50 is Kin/Elec, and both of my new one's sets are ones I don't have experience with. How are the Poison powers usually slotted, focusing on -tohit or -def?

As a Defender, should I be focusing more on slotting the -DEF/-Res procs in the attacks, rather than damage procs?

Obviously the build isn't even complete yet, but I'll throw it up here in hopes y'all can provide some direction. I don't necessarily want a cookie cutter or to copy anyone's build, merely some bullet points about what holes I need to/can shore up to provide great utility while still enjoying the pew-pew.

Y'all keep on keepin' on, hope to get some wisdom!

  5. It's been said a bunch here, and those of us who are/were long time folks know it'll never really be over, but I wholly support more and more knockback.

My first 50 on live was my namesake, En/En blaster. Knockback is awesome. You feel like a freaking hero. Yes, if you're a melee you have to take a couple of steps to stab/punch/etc.  Deal. If you didn't want to walk to attack you should have picked a range toon.

Positioning is so inherently important to using your powers to their fullest. Hate cones? Learn their shape and how best to utilize them. Actually move around rather than just hovering in place or sitting down in a spawn. The recent massive upgrade to travel power synchronicity has made it easier than ever to do this. If you're noticing too much scatter, move around laterally and sweep the mobs back together; if you're hover-blasting, just do the same (with the added bonus of three-dimensional mobility and speed).

Knockback is a *tool*. Its effectiveness or misuse is not inherent, it comes from the user.

Is there a list of what's available anywhere? The wiki just says " variety of temporary attacks. Most of these are useful only for character concept" And it would be nice to have a list to look at specifically for concept planning.

They're all listed at the P2W vendor. What specifically are you looking for, like animations and stats on them?

I had planned to do this as a separate post, but it fits in nicely here, so... I feel your pain, @Nightwatch

So, I’m recruiting for an MSR the other night, and I have this exchange via tell with someone, who shall remain anonymous:

OK, so I was a bit of a jerk in my reply, but I’m also going to defend that here in a bit. Normally, I don’t reply to tells at all when recruiting for an MSR, but I had this short lived fantasy that maybe I was helping people understand the game better to respond with “broadcast in zone when you get here.” I get A LOT of tells for this event, despite specifically asking for NO TELLS.

The overall problem here is that in-game I can’t give you a detailed enough reason why I am not inviting you until you broadcast in zone. Now, you could just say, “I don’t need a reason, that’s a reasonable enough request so I will accommodate it.” That’d be cool. But maybe you are a bit like the person above and feel entitled to a more detailed explanation while I am trying to form my league. So, here goes...

BROADCASTING CONFIRMS YOU ARE IN THE ZONE

    • You have to be in the zone to broadcast in that zone. You can’t broadcast to RWZ from, say, Atlas Park. So, broadcasting in a zone confirms you are currently in that zone.

    • Rikti Warzone is limited to 50 players right now. At one point it was, for the most part, completely open and running 2 full MSRs at the same time in the same zone happened a lot. Now, a full league of 48 doesn’t leave a lot of extra space in the zone. While we can ask people who are not in the MSR to change zones, nothing requires them to do so - they could be AFK, obstinate, or just not looking at chat. Whatever the case, it is possible for the zone to be full before the league is full. When you broadcast for an invite, I know you are in the zone right now, ready to go.

    • If I give a spot to a player who sent a tell and is out of zone, they may never be able to get into the zone - thus depriving someone who IS in the zone of getting to participate.

    • It is easy to THINK you are in Rikti Warzone 1, when you are in fact in Rikti Warzone 2. Broadcasting helps confirm you are in the same place as the league.

BROADCASTING ALLOWS OTHER TEAM LEADERS TO INVITE YOU

    • Putting together a league of 48 people can keep you pretty busy. You are probably advertising every minute or so, inviting people in, placing them in different teams, making sure you have a couple of level 50s on each team, trying to keep a mix of classes on each time, joining in the pre-game banter, etc. When you broadcast in zone, team leaders can help by inviting you to their team.

    • There is a bug that has to do with alignment, and is not likely to get fixed anytime soon. If the league leader has someone on their team out of zone, the league leader may not be able to invite you. That’s another instance where it becomes important for a team leader to be able to help out.

    • You may be on the league leaders gignore list. And, maybe in this case you shouldn’t be in the league anyway. But, if you broadcast and get an invite from a team leader who is NOT ignoring you, you get to participate in the raid so long as you can manage to be cool. Might even be able to get yourself off the league leaders gignore list, if that matters to you.

    • There is a BlockingAccept bug where sometimes, even when everything else looks normal, you invite someone and get an error message like: “Could not Invite (player), BlockingAccept” and they have to be invited again. Here again, having the ability for Team Leaders to redundantly invite folks from broadcast is helpful.

    • Much like the BlockingAccept bug, which you have to look for on your system tab, a league leader is also having to deal with players who are still on a team, or still in an AE session.

BROADCASTING KEEPS THE TELL CHANNEL OPEN FOR THE LEAGUE LEADER

    • Another fun little bug in the game is that newly invited players may not get sidekicked up to level 49. Leaving the tell channel open allows the league leader to get important notifications like “I’m not showing on a team” or “I’m still showing as level 1” or “can I be on the same team as X” or any number of other matters that often come up pre-raid.

FOLLOWING INVITE DIRECTIONS PROVES YOU READ

    • An MSR doesn’t require a whole lot of direction, but there are some differences in how each league leader runs it so it’s helpful to know you do, in fact, read instructions.

    • Especially when you get into iTrial badge runs, reading chat is very important. If you aren’t following instructions in the LFG ad, how do we know you will follow instructions in the trial itself?

AND LASTLY, WHY THE HECK NOT?

    • If you don’t know how to get to the RWZ, most leaders will put directions in their actual LFG ad. You can also use the HELP channel. Also, I’m sure a league leader would forgive a direct tell if you were just asking how to get to the RWZ, so long as you are not asking for an advance invitation.

    • It’s not unreasonable for a team or league leader, regardless of event, to ask for tells - or ask for no tells at all - to get invited.

    • It’s not unreasonable for a team or league leader, regardless of event, to ask you to broadcast for an invite. It’s not like I am saying solve this math problem and show your answer in the request channel. Though, that does give me an idea…

Look, there’s a reason why there are not a ton of people running leagues, much less 48 person leagues. You get a lot of hate, and it’s a fair bit of work. There are times I am recruiting for an hour, and other times it fills up on the first ad. You have to deal with interpersonal stuff sometimes, people who go AFK in the bowl, etc. Anything you can do to make my job easier makes me want to run these things more, so I appreciate that.

Having played CoH for over a dozen years, and being quite familiar with how all of the power within the Fly power set function, and interact with one another, the recent changes to these powers are… not good.

Fly and Hover should be mutually exclusive.  Afterburner should be a toggle, and NOT shut down when flying halfway across a large zone.  If I wanted Evasive Maneuvers, I'd have taken the power set that offered that power -- and I'm fairly certain Hover had that handled anyway.

This new setup makes the powers more complicated than they need to be.

Basically… restore them to their original functions?  Please?

Do you know how any of these powers actually work, or are you legitimately just trolling?

    • I know I could do all this on brainstorm server, but convincing my super group and friends to come play with me on what everyone considers the "Test" server is a bit tough

It *is* the test server (from what I understand, but I haven't used it and I could be WILDLY wrong), in that new or soon-to-maybe-be-released stuff is allowed to be added and tested by players at every stage of gameplay. Hence the auto-50s there, it's for a purpose helping with game development.

Essentially this is the same old discussion of "it's the journey" vs. "impatient uber-gamer", which is existential and deeply ingrained in all of us. Do I miss the old days of taking weeks or months to hit 50? A little, to be honest. I had connections to those toons that only really come with time spent.

Do I enjoy DXP pretty much permanently now, because we've all learned that all of this could go SCREW YOUR MEMORIES POOF tomorrow? You bet your sweet petunia I do.

Do I mind folks using AE for literally anything they want/can do? Nope, fun is 245% subjective. You do you.

When I first started this game, I logged AG in for the first time during a Winter Lord invasion of Atlas Park. Within 15 minutes I was level 20 and had SO MANY COOL-SOUNDING (from the descriptions only, mind you) powers to take.

    /morganfreeman

I spent the next twenty levels debt-capped.

    /morganfreeman

So, no. I don't think insta-50s should or would ever be implemented. We don't operate on the "standard" wavelength, which is why Homecoming even exists. If our current dozen ways of speeding up character progression don't suit you, either come up with an implementable one or try to meet us old timers in the middle somewhere.

As usual, my bud Lumi has scienced out the facts. *clap clap clap*

  11. Imagine, if you will: a stealthy, silent assassin tasked with taking down a crew of convicted murderers who escaped from prison. The assassin's arsenal includes tiny, air-propelled darts which deliver a powerful (but not lethal) paralyzing agent, as well as a secondary chamber holding painkillers. The assassin enters the hideout, readies her darts, and...

Waves grandly at the criminals, as if welcoming them into her home on Thanksgiving.

    Or, in another case...

Pulls a child's learning tablet from her belt and presents it to the thugs, who are amazed at its soft, green glow.

    Anything wrong with this picture?

I propose: change the animation for Toxic Dart completely, from the grand waving to the 100% perfect animation from an Arachnos Widow's Poison Dart power, sound effect and all.

For Injection, add the aforementioned animation to the power's activation when the target is a hostile critter (if this is possible in the current engine, not 100% sure on this part.) If it's not possible to have two animations for the same power, I suggest using the Poison Dart animation exclusively.

Why this particular suggestion? Other than the example above, which shows the issue with the powers' current animations, I believe it would expand the number of users of both Experimentation and Medicine as a whole, and Medicine in particular, particularly for those of us who are on the more...nefarious side of things and don't (whether for conceptual or practical reasons) wouldn't take Aid Other, or only/primarily use Injection as an attack rather than a buff. In the interests of many defense-based characters or those lacking a self-heal, Aid Self is desirable! Having one of its prerequisite powers have a silly animation is less than ideal.

If one more critter with Blind is added to the game, I'll hit someone with my shoe.  Fuckers aren't difficult, they're just time-outs.  If there's one thing we don't need, it's more time-outs.

Time-outs can be helpful, in that it diverts attention. I for one like status hits like Blind (especially on my kitted Savage/SR brute), that remind me I'm not 100% unaffected; a time-out may be frustrating, but it can also provide a small moment of novel challenge and a reminder of one's own digital mortality, to get a wee philosophical.

That's the purpose of grind.  That's all it's for.  It's a mechanic intended to give developers the time they need to make more content.  Sometimes it delays progression, sometimes it doesn't.  Grind never prevents players from complaining about a lack of content, because no amount of grind can do that.  Players always finish content before the next update, no matter how competent, well funded and expertly run the development team is.  A little well-placed and carefully designed grind can make the difference between players complaining the day after the content is released, or several weeks after.  Excessive grind also leads to complaints, so it's a narrow path to walk.

    Emphasis mine.

Lumi's exactly right; we have to remember that in our special case, the devs aren't even being paid for the time they need to make more content (AFAIK), or at least not paid as a full-time professional software developer would be. While well-deserved criticism isn't absolutely anathema (WHY THE HELL DOES MY INSP TRAY KEEP MOVING AROUND MY UI EVERY TIME I ZONE INTO A MISSION FOR CHRIST'S SAKE), we maybe need to relax on the large-scale philosophical discussions regarding this game we all love because of the circumstances in which it exists. If that makes sense.

Also, hey Lumi! Long time no forum-speak.
