  1. Wow, I did not know that it was so new. That seems like such an obscure reference then. Awesome work whoever wrote that joke.
  2. I can't believe that this wasn't noticed long ago, but i noticed it for the first time yesterday. When starting the questline "the graveyard shift" in Ouroboros, you are told about and address 612 Wharf avenue. This quest was made in about 2004-2006 I -think-, and I'm 99% certain it is a reference to the Aqua Teen Hunger force episode "MC Pee Pants" (season 1, episode 9). Pretty obscure nowadays, but what a solid joke when CoH launched!
  3. I'm pretty familiar with all of the fun colors you can make copper if you know what you're doing, have a tiny bit of chemistry knowledge, and happen to have good ventilation; but you got me wondering as to why almost every other metal appears grey except for copper and gold. Turns out it has to do with their electron structures and the science is above me. But this got me thinking, we already know where everything is on the periodic table up into the transuranic elements, and most of those aren't especially stable. Is impervium an alloy? Has it been stated that it's a pure element in lore? If it is an alloy, it could be a whole list of colors based on the information I can find with a cursory search. If it's an alloy, I'm voting for a middle toned silver with a sort of purple sheen based on the in game images.
  4. Clamor. Full stop I don't care about her abilities, because that isn't what clamor is about. Clamor is a design masterclass on how to design violent creeps. Sure, the claw is a little over the top in todays popular aesthetic, I'd make is smaller and more skeletal if I was designing her today; but the piercings, the bright purple leather, the wild hair and general proclivity for being an agent of unhinged violence all make her a great underboss. And the safety pins. *chef's kiss*. Every time I'm in a Yin and someone new has never done it before, they always mention how grotesque/ insane/ malignant they are. 10/10
  5. I had no idea that thread was a thing! pretty cool. I posted what i had come up with there, but I think OP is right, there isn't much in non anachronist ninja apparel for female toons. I managed to make characters that are obviously East Asian in their inspiration, but most of them look samurai or Dynasty warriors (which I think was a bigger deal in 2004).
  6. Someone was asking for a female ninja costume in the general chat and that lead me to post this here. it's certainly not a ninja costume, and I'm no in love with the hat, but i think it serves as a really nice dynasty warriors meets assassin look that resembles an anachronistic anime ninja. Dynasty Ninja.costume
  7. A few weeks ago I was having a chat with friends over dinner and the topic of winning the lottery came up. Here is the math that we came up with. A 1 billion dollar lotter winning would leave you with about 600 million dollars when you take the lump sum ( anyone who is an accountant, please keep me honest here, this is not my area of expertise.). If you Invest that money and can get 5% returns, that would leave you with about 30 million a year to spend and live off of. If it helps, that’s about $82,200/ day. Now we have to look at the cost of developing an MMO. I'm going to put the price at $200 million. This should cover the costs of -almost- anything we can think of within reason. Anyone who says you could make CoX2 - electric defender bogaloo for $1,000,000 is lying. They might not be doing it maliciously, but they are lying. The actual cost is heavily based on vision too, if you’re funding this, I assume you get quite a bit of say in the matter. I am not certain how much NCsoft would want for the permanent rights to the IP. I’m certain it’s more than it is worth, but you can’t put a price on a 1 of 1 item. So with these things in mind I figure you could personally create and fund a studio to make CoX2 if you won a billion dollars US pre tax. I’d personally try to do things “right”, there are some positions at this theoretical company that are basically already spoken for. The current dev team, GMs and moderators are doing a better job than many paid MMOs, imagine how good they would be if they could spend more time on their passion. I'd probably end up overpaying for a lot of that talent, because let's be honest, we're not trying to turn a profit here. That is one route that would cost a ton of money and -might- yield a great game in 7 to 10 years. But If you have that money, just buy the permanent rights to the IP, sign them over to homecoming servers LLC and set up a trust that funds homecoming servers LLC under conditions that they don’t add microtransactions or payment (something like that. Contact a lawyer or 10 before you do any of this). This will cost less and likely have better results if you ask me TL;DR No chance unless I win the lottery and get bored of travel.
  8. I've got a 50 dark/dark/ soul of both, the 'troller (Witchcraft) is my "main" but I play the 'fender (Witchipedia) quite a bit as well. We're comparing Gala to Granny Smith, but they're apples. Both are set up rather similarly but have very different incarnate slottings. As you've pointed out, the 'fender has a much better blast rotation (although I need to get someone with better mathhammering to see if I can upgrade the rotation) and the 'troller had better. . Intangibles. Now I know that sounds like a dig, but it isn't at all. The 'troller can tank better and get a group out of a jam with heart of darkness if fearsome stare misses. When a group is struggling, I'd rather have the 'troller. I also -feel- (doesn't make it true) that playing the 'troller is a little more "chill" when I'm soloing. The svartvarg is an okay enough tank that I can relax behind him and all of my get out of jail free cards. That being said, when a group is good, the 'fender is more desireable. The AOE damage difference is quite noticable and the need for tons of control doesn't seem to be there in much of the Itrial content. I can't think of a time I used heart of darkness as a get out of jail free card in BAF for example. I'm also not certain how much value I get out of possess either. That's about half of my 'troller exclusive abilities that I don't use much in Itrials. In the end, they are both fun to play. One might appeal more to some than others (I certainly log into one based on how I'm feeling at times), but I'll be the last to tell you which is better.
  9. There are numerous studies done by different research firms on what people of different demographics think. Some of the really popular questions that these studies like to ask go like this. how much much to you need to be considered rich how much money is enough how much money do you have to make to be rich Obviously, this is of great importance to politicians and behavioral economists alike, but they have been forgetting the really important question. They forget to ask about CoX : Homecoming. I've spoken with Pew research and they seemed disinterested in solving this conundrum, so here is the question that research firms are too afraid to ask. According to you, how much must on have to be considered rich? Why? This is, of course, an opinion, and a nuanced one. Considerations in your wealth you may not have thought of. If you have a supergroup bank full of winter and very rare enhancements, you might consider that part of your wealth, or you might not. Do you consider the value of the enhancements on your toons as part of your wealth? I don't, but that's because I tend to view slotted enhancements as so illiquid that it's just not worth the effort unless I know I'll never use that toon again (which has never been the case). Do you count unspent merits as wealth? Any reasoning on your personal calculation as to what is "Rich" would be appreciated. Reasoning as to why a certain amount of inf and assets is a lot more interesting and useful that simply, "lol, X bill inf or less is poor!" To be clear, I am not asking how much you have, that's none of my business, I want to know how much -you- consider enough to be rich.
  10. So this is more of a thought exercise than anything else, but it sounds like a neat idea to try! My apologies if this has been brought up in the recent past, I couldn't think of how to word searches for the topic. I was speaking with some mates the other day and in our discussion the concept of the “ideal dungeon team” came up. This is not a concept related strictly to CoH, but I’ll explain the concept through the lens of CoH. Most content in the game is designed to accommodate 8 players (there are larger raids, and SBB takes four, but I digress). This means that if there are 8 like-minded people who would like to clear all content as a group (from DFB to four star hard mode content), it could be done with those same players. A static number is quite common in MMO design and we all hate it when there is not a consistent number of people allowed in “non-raid” content. Imagine if each TF had a different max number of players, not great. With the fact that there are 8 heroes/ villains possible in each of these, we can ask the question that some of you have already seen coming. If you were building a team of 8 heroes/villains to complete all 8 person content in the game, what would you pick? I’m not asking for a Razor’s edge min/maxed set of builds by any means, just some ideas as to what you consider a valid group for the assignment. In a perfect world, I’d like to avoid mirror builds, as that’s a little bland, but I can't see why anything else should be off the table. NOTE: Yes, I realize that anyone can do any content (or close to any content), but let’s accept the reality that a team of 6 masterminds, a sentinel, and a fire/rad Brute to tank might have some challenges trying to finish later content compared to a well balanced group. For the sake of argument, let's assume "official" content only. There is some incredibly interesting and challenging AE content, but I'll leave that alone for now. Thoughts?
  11. Love this, although my French is pretty bad these days, and certainly not strong enough to do anything well . . I would think Ghost widow = Araignee Fantome (widow in this case is referring to a black widow spider, so I feel that just using spider is better here.)
  12. Wow, that's one heck of a great question that has so many complex answer. Here comes my overly long and pointless answer. . .you were warned. The game is one of the few that can be both frantic or chill based on what you want to do. If I'm looking for a frantic run about experience, I can start of a speed run Yin taskforce and see if we can do it in under 12 minutes. it almost feels like an action race game when there are 8 people all trying to get to the next trigger (this partially echoes @tidge first point, we know what triggers do what on most/all of the common content). If I'm looking for a chill time while I watch Taskmaster on Youtube, I can fire farm or run missions on a mastermind that is specifically designed to be pretty hands off. Many have said this, but customizability is insane in this game. One of the biggest MMOs out there has 13 classes, another has 22. even with the different specs, that tops out around 50 or so different character playstyles. CoH has . . .2500 or so, haven't done the math with the new additional powersets. This is just the customization of the technical aspects of your character. I have characters who are Cowboys Aliens A nuclear powered robot who gain sentience and found a Laser sword. Cyberpunk cop from the future A Samurai from the past A modern scientist who researches dark matter A Victorian occultist who can control lighting That's a pretty wide range of concepts, and no matter how weird or clever i am, someone in my group is so much better! What a great price. I donate to the server when I can, but it still costs less than other games these days because it's not a cash mall designed to bleed you dry like a Las Vegas casino. Third space? I guess so. I'm a pretty gregarious person by nature, but this game often fulfills a need that many people don't realize they have. Have you ever gone to a movie theatre even though you weren't stoked about the movie you were going to see? You just wanted to be around people so you didn't feel isolated, but you also don't want to be required to engage in many social norms. People go to bars and casinos for this purpose. They sit down at the bar on the end or at a blackjack table and play minimum bets, all the while they listen and basically people watch. America (I am speaking from an American perspective on this) doesn't have much of a cafe culture, heck we don't even Fika, so that ability to be in a social place but not be social is hard to find and often quite expensive. This might be the Lake Wobegon effect, but people here are, on average, nicer than average. I've heard people call this game strategic versus tactical and I like that. While I'm likely contradicting my first reason a tad, this is a game that doesn't require much in the terms of twitch reflexes. That's a big bonus for the getting older person that I am. TLDR; lots of reasons. Their like piranhas, one isn't enough, but there are a lot more than one.
  13. As always, @Spaghetti Betty showing how it is done. I wanted to ask about the choice of soul mastery in this build. Is there a particular reason you went with Gloom and Dark Obliteration, or would Mu Mastery suit the build just as well and you made a stylistic/ preferential choice?
  14. Preach! If you want to play a defender to 50 solo. . I just feel (doesn't make it true) that corrupting ia the way to go. I digress. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I’m any kind of expert on defenders, I have one and it’s dark/dark, so really a deftroller of sorts with the current build out. My wife is the defender fiend so I’ve consulted her for more balanced opinions. That being said. . . I never had any difficulty with endurance compared to other archetypes. Sure, I ran out of endurance, 1st, 2nd, and 4th mission if Yin come to mind, but that has everything to do with freakshow and nothing to do with being a defender. The build was not good. I have exemplared her down to do another Yin and it was completely different now that a proper build with some attuned stuff in some slots and a few IOs that are still working at that level. No endurance issues. More testing data- Just finished a Yin with my wife, she played her FF/Ice defender, no issues with endurance and we were racing through it as fast as we could to see what we could make happen(finished in about 15 minutes.) . I'll have her run on another one, but I'm confident of the results. Her defenders are rather expensive builds, this may be a factor I cannot account for. You might be wondering why I’m using Yin as the benchmark? You said level 20-25 and I don’t like Citadel as much. I'd love so see a screen shot of your build, because I'm just baffled as to why you might be having issues. Doesn't even have to be a mids download build. I can make it in mids from the screen shot.
  15. This has proven a bit more challenging that I expected. I'm not in love with the build, but it should be a good template to work with. The numbers are also (understandably) not 100% correct as Mids has not updated based on the beta test info. I would be perfectly happy for other people with more expertise look this over and make revisions as I Feel there are improvements to be made, but I'm not seeing them in the time I have this weekend.
