So, I always found that the pets make good hitpoint buffers.  If they've died it usually means I need to use defense inspirations or get out of dodge (when I'm solo).  I like to think of the pets not as summons but my character actually building them out of shadows (even if the game says otherwise).  It makes them more palatable for me.

You seem to play your dominator more as support than I do, which I find pretty interesting.  I play much more like a blaster.

What do you think of the attached build?  I tried to rearrange your build to include both Haunt and Umbral Beast, stay completely ranged, and add a bit more DPS.  I dropped Midnight Grasp and Engulfing Darkness for the pets.  The idea is your ranged attack chain would be Dark Grasp → Moonbeam → Gloom → Umbral Torrent / Nightfall.  Haunt should hit pretty hard in this build too.  Though, I admit I took out the +Range set bonuses which may be a non-starter...

I do not know where you get the idea I okay as support.  I play the Dark Corr as a Blaster and am trying to figure if Dom does more dps. Taking out the + range removes damage as it lessens cone aoe.  It also decreases ranged dps survivability.  Imo

  2. My “meta plot” take on it is simple, yet complex.  Also, absolutely true.

    Journey with me…;

The CoH/CoV starts when you create a character.  Day one. Every single character has the same day one.  Now, it is about to get through the looking glass weird.

As you progress from level 1 to 50 (and this could take 3 hours in an event like mapserver.  Or years.) The game. Does not.  Change.  Ever.  Day one.  It looks like the clocks turn, day turns to night, to day. But CoH/V time is “stuck” on a specific day.

The Menders know this.  They take advantage of it.  They want your help. To 1) fix all the things wrong with today. ( admitted by them, although they leave out the “today” part) 2) find a way to move the whole world past “day 1”.  ( they will never admit this and probably not all Menders know).

It must be an extension of Rule #29 of Peter's Evil Overlord List: "I will dress in bright and cheery colors, and so throw my enemies into confusion."  Substitute "use an effect" for "dress".  😁

I find the timing of this thread interesting.  I just started a new earth/dark dominator tonight and when fine-tuning the colors at it's creation, I was shocked that Dark Assault/Gather Shadows (note the name) fires off with a surrounding rainbow of colors which seems to project from the body.  What it does not do is gather shadows to the body.  So I switched it to Soul Noir.  I mean, "noir" means "black", yes?  Now it has almost-black spheres swirl around your character...while projecting a rainbow of colors from the body.  🤦‍♂️

Incidentally, have you ever run an earth/dark dom, Snarky?  While it is definitely a glass cannon, I found its really a fun build, and by level 20, it was starting to show as fairly powerful.  I suspect were I to focus more on better enhancement slotting, the character would be even greater.

yeah, the gather shadows rainbow thing.... like, dam....

i have an seismic/temp blaster and a seismic/earth blaster but have not tried those powers on a dom yet.

Seriosly considering dropping the dark/dark dom over the two rainbow powers.  It is not F-ing Twilight over here....

Hi @Snarky, this is really interesting!  How does it play?  I'd love to have a build that doesn't need the fighting pool.  Do you use fearsome stare enough to maintain stacks of +Damage from Superior Ascendancy of the Dominator?

fearsome stare is a MUST for any Dark player.  I play a lot of dark, every AT, this power is Gold.  Do i hit it EVERY time it is off cooldown?  No.  Do i lean into it as soon as I see a large group? Oh yeah.  Do I hit it again on a large group? Oh yeah.

Trying to determine if I need to fit Haunt and Unmral Beast back in.  I really dislike pets, except in rare circumstances.  Haunt is less pet than strange ST attack.  But what could I drop to get it in? Soul Consumption?  Which is more of an O crap button on a build I try to play ranged.

The thing plays well.  Trying to determine if I like it better than Corr, and it is definitely different than that.

  5. So I am trying out a dominator now.  i have this dark dark dom all situated.  the costume, hand colored every power.  dark, evil.

oh, and the domination power?  looks like a unicorn crapped on my head....

why is an "villain" archetype set up with this pretty pretty princess affect color for their signature archetype power.  which cannot be recolored?

While I would NEVER suggest KM to anyone, you do know I am currently working up a KM Tanker.  Why? Apparently I want to suffer.

That is what I have, the "joke" wasa a Tank-Mage.  And i made it a undead sorcerous Invul/KM that stood around looking like it was casting spells.  It wasnt horrid....and it achieved the look....but not crushing any records for anything.

I've recently returned to Homecoming after awhile, and I'm kinda lost. My highest level char (fire/atomic blaster) is 40, and I had to stop playing him cause he dies. A lot.

I realize this is vague, but I'm looking for a toon that is a capable mix of damage output and survival. I've heard brutes have that going for them. I'm working on leveling my rad/shield brute, who feels lackluster in damage output and also kinda squishy. I'm not sure if ST or AoE attacks are better given mob density in the game. When I put myself in places where I can make good use of AoE attacks, there are usually too many mobs and I die. But killing targets one at a time is obviously much slower. I shy away from the idea of a tanker because last time I played one, I found the damage output lacking and was kinda bored with the AT.

Primary power set, I've heard good things about battle axe and I'm curious about titan weapons. Secondary power set, I've also heard good things about bio armor and rad armor, but I find it hard to build thematically around those two. Generally, is it safer to build around defense or resistance? Which primary/secondary powersets might serve my purposesr?

Thanks so much for any guidance- I really appreciate it.

For starters I would go with a rock solid set like Invul, if you can fit that into a concept.  Aim for a Hyperstrike build.  Although Invul with just SO enhancers is dam good.

If you dont mind the crash Super Strength is awesome.  part of this is the giant +to hit that is part of the set.  The overloaded DPS makes up for it being S/L.  If shit is not res to S/L it is insane.

Claws and Savage are both fast hard hitting sets.

Energy Melee is a solid ST performer, and now has decent AoE

Dark Melee is a very hard hitting ST set with a toolkit of heal/+end/to hit debuffs going for it.  The pairing of Dark/Invul will make one of the toughest Brutes walking.  Dark has little AoE and some people hate the melee cone.

There are some sets I would avoid, combo sets and gimmick sets do not do well late game.  I have run Kinetic melee at 50.  do not do that lol.

are you cleverly getting a blood mention in and distracting us with a big picture or is this sub-conscious?

it's my blood and you can't have it.

bwah hah hah.  there is a story there actually.  in my dabbling in art i have studied about people that hoard "junk" and create art.  one of my instructors did this and was becoming quite successful with her work.  i grok it, yet find it beyond my skill.  taking beautiful pigments and destroying them by trying to make them into something on canvas is the height of my ability.

I've got 7 brutes and a scrapper I'm going to build, but currently i'm working on a claws/regen scrap and a kat/inv brute. I forget that that one is a scrapper lol

I figure if I know where I'm going on these two then I'll know where to go on the rest when I get to them.

Confuse and taunt were on my mind cause i had done a manti TF shortly before I posted this. I'm glad tactics was specifically mention cause I thought about adding it to power choices and now I'm glad i didn't. Confuse though, the regen and inv toons tend to be susceptible to it. Inv I got up to 50% and /regen i got to 51.25%.  Honestly I don't know how much to shoot for but i'd guess 100%

I understand the gist of "add to what you've got" but for example with /regen it seems like it needs some def and resist cause I tried just adding recharge and regen and that wasn't enough. He was much more fun to play once I added IOs with more status and more def/res. Hes sitting at 11ish def but resist is all over the board with a min of 21.05 and a max of 39.55.

What I'm getting at with the regen (and the other toons I'm going to build) is I like the idea of having a bit of def/resist/regen/end/rechrg added in, but I'm not sure how much I'd add to make it worth the time/effort/influence.

Look to Hyperstrike for an Invulnerability Template.  Anything else is just less.

Are you a hoarder?  Are you one of those people that just can’t throw anything away because you feel you may need it once again in the future?

Time to clean up your house.  You will never find a use for that old pizza box, empty toilet paper roll or 8-track player.  Throw them away!

    are you positive?

Given DDR I probably would not chase, it, just take what comes naturally. Been a while since I last did a straight up Resistance build (as opposed to Hybrid or Defense).

I got into Brutes after playing my first, a  DM/Elec and it was pretty survivable, but go figure with two heals and two endurance recovery methods. Maybe +Rchg/Healing is the way to go with Resist sets?

It can be.  Depends on the powers.  Both things are great in general on Brutes.  My Dark Dark runs a solid amount if recharge.  Because long cooldown great powers and, lets face it, not a lot to choose from in attack chain. After running blasters and corrupters you seriously are like “faster brute faster” lol

That's....a post alright. I'm just going to drop out of this thread now. Although I do have to ask; is there a form I can fill out before I can ask you to come in and defend me or is invoking you enough?

What you need to do is take a cave bat and release it into the sky.  Then have a mage cast a spell on it so that it glows blood red for three minutes.  Then explodes.  Sometimes, not always, but sometimes that gets my attention.  Or i could give you my cell number.  But you look suspicious, so no, try the bat thing.

I have moved from the camp that sees Def>Res>Heal to thinking a character isn't really suitably protected until they have covered two of the three in their build, regardless of what the armor set provides. Yeah, adding Defense to a resistance set does mean your Defense can be stripped, but you still will have all Resistance and it should be at high values. While Defense sets from with DDR, that merely constrains how much Def they lose.

I like your basic premise of having more than one leg on the stool. Defense is great.  Carry a couple purple inspirations.  In my opinion wasting build power chasing defense on a resistance set is an unmitigated waste

From my point of view, that poster threw something I said back in my face after we had already discussed it. If I'm wrong about that, someone please explain why they brought it back up to me a second time. If they don't want to discuss something I did, they can let it lie.

Conversations are odd and beautiful things.  Many times looping and spinning like acrobats. Oftentimes revisiting a section for clarification, emphasis, or expounding upon. Conversations are organic, and as part of the very definition are the product of two or more who are striving to be understood.  They can also be just plain silly.

  15. My two inf.  You says you have like 8 projects.  I assume different armor types.  I do not run many Def sets, but on those you obviously want to get to softcap, and then if doing a lot of incarnate work, softcap that as well.

In armor Def>Res>Heal.  A "blended" set like Invul gives you respectable Def number, that you might pump to nice levels, as well as respectable Res numbers.  And Dull Pain.  A Heal/+HP Buff that is so good. Invul also has good defense debuff resistance.

Straight Resistance armors.  Tough to sell these babies.  If you slap on Defense, (and they have no defense debuff resistance) all that investment can be gone in seconds.

IMPORTANT FACT about Resistance in CoH/V.  You will never find a Resistance Debuff Resistance listed, like you do Defense Debuff Resistance.  You know why?  Resistance is it's own Resistance Debuff Resistance.  So, people talk about hard cap RES for Tanks / Brutes as 90%.  True enough.  But if you get it to 100% it CANNOT be stripped.  (Okay, it can.  there are a tiny, miniscule, count them on one hand number of enemies in CoH with irresistable resistance debuff)  But the gold standard is 100%

Strange armors.  My beloved Dark.  Dark is a resist set that takes the standard Def>Res>Heal, stands it on it's head, then field kicks that bitch down the highway.  How?  Oh, glad you ask.  You will see many people with Dark builds or conversations on Dark Armor where they leave off or discuss the great way to leave off using all the toggles. Because toggles take end man.  Real assholes.  Mainly because then they play it and it sucks.  Sure, the end curve is better.  But the armor sucks.  here is an idea.  FIX the Endurance problems, then use some of the best defensive powers in the game, that are right in the powerset.  A PBAoE fear (stackable with a melee attack Fear) and a PBAoE Stun will severely limit incoming attacks.  Not being attacked is (say it with me) DEFENSE.  A non suppressing stealth also limits incoming attacks.  DEFENSE (and why I like this set for a Brute better than a Tank) Then you have great Resists (and you can pump Energy Res to 60+% on a dark brute, the rest into gold 100% neighborhood)  Then you have the BEST combat heal in the game.  Up every 10?  seconds or so.  Dark armor is very odd.  But once you understand how to be effective with it you have one of the most powerful armors in the game.

And that is most of what I know about Brute Armor.

    Have fun.

  16. strange homage, but it is me.  the idea is a kitchen appliance (vegetable chopper/food processor) which is animated....and kind of a badass.

no combo sets, something that runs well in incarnate as well as pre50 play.  something with sharp edges... is claws good on scrapper

secondary.... willpower? or invul using a hyperstrike build?

i never run scrappers so any feedback is appreciated.
