Fire/Earth/Fire Dom questions.

Greetings folks.

 

I’ve recently gotten back to CoX as one of my all-time favorite games and have been tossing ideas about in my head for a while. Recently I asked my wife what sort of character would represent me as a person and she landed on a Fire/earth/fire dom. I have to admit the concept is intriguing to me. So I did a bit of research before writing this but couldn’t find much in the way of this sort of build. I don’t really have access to Mids atm so more wondering what powers should I take/avoid, any particular sets to look for, etc. I will also say that I’m more thinking of an all-round build rather than say farming focused.

 

Some of what I’ve read suggests that Hot Feet and Mudpots would work wonderful together and could potentially be proc monsters. Am I right on this? Also both of those say that I can’t fly but does that mean I can’t jump as well?

 

I’ve also seen comments on avoiding Smoke and grabbing Bonfire (with a KB->KD IO). Bonfire seems like an obvious choice but why avoid Smoke?

 

And I’ve noticed that Earth Assault has lots of knock about in it. Will that be a problem since the KB->KD IO is a unique one and can it be mitigated if it is?

 

Thank you for any and all advice and sorry for the rapid fire questions. Never really got into min-maxing on Live but seems far more interesting here so trying to learn what I can.

I have an Earth/Earth Dom, currently at 33 on Everlasting, but she saw 50 on Live.

I also have a Fire/Kin Controller at 40 on Everlasting. I can only comment about Fire control from that perspective, having never actually run it on a Dominator.

 

Using Hot Feet and Mudpots together would be an extreme Endurance hog. Plan accordingly, if at all.

 

On my Troller, Bonfire with the KB -> KD proc is glorious! Definitely do it, as I can't see any possible reason why it wouldn't be even better on a Dom.

 

Earth Assault is extremely melee-centric, and uses up a lot of Endurance. That said, Stone Spears is useful for it's range and knockup potential. Skip Hurl Boulder, it has poor damage compared to its activation time.

 

I normally caution against chasing Defensive softcaps on Doms at the expense of everything else, but Earth Assault is an exception to that. You'll want to take Tough and Weave, and probably take Ice Mastery for your Epic pool.

i’ve been experimenting with this combo on Pineapple, and though it sounds fantastic on paper, in game i struggled a lot. 

 

fire didn’t offer enough controls to keep me safe enough to stay in melee range to utilize the destruction that is /earth. i pretty much had to take ageless for endurance management, and though KB to KD in bonfire is glorious fun, stuff still got enough attacks off to send me to the hospital. i couldn’t manage high difficulties solo and i couldn’t find a way to run mud pots and hot feet in addition to other defensive toggles without incarnates.

 

i did, however, find a pairing that worked heavenly...ice/earth. the confuse aura kept me noticeably safer, so much so that i was soloing +4/8 with very little effort. you also get ice slick, and it doesn’t require any KB->KD slots. i put a stealth IO in super speed and by the time i’m in melee range, minions and LTs  are confused...plus jack frost is a lot sturdier than the imps. i’d give the pairing a go, it’s incredible to play.

Thank you both for the info. I’ve been running this combo and am up to 32 atm. And yeah I’m finding that I’m struggling as well mostly with my endurance bar. Running Hot Feet, Tough, and Weave eats up a lot of my recovery so my attacks just devour my blue bar. This makes it very risky to try the higher difficulties. As I’ve been getting IOs and starting to fill in some set bonuses things have eased up a bit. The imps so far seem to be alright but literally just got them so no real data to work off of.

 

Alll that said, I’ve still had a ton of fun running this toon, especially in teams if there is some sort of recovery buff. Mind he is also my highest lvl atm and the last exp I had with incarnates was on live so no idea how that will/won’t help. The build I’m working from is a fairly expensive one so certainly a late game build (will post once I can get to a computer. On Ipad atm.).

 

Been thinking of keeping the concept but perhaps rerolling as Earth /Fire. Not sure if that would be worth it though.

Earth is a really awesome primary. i can’t speak for fire secondary as i haven’t played it, but i’d argue earth offers the greatest form of control options, especially on a dominator. earthquake with a -RES proc does wonders! stalagmites animates quick and recharges very quickly.

 

the impression i’ve got from the forums is that earth favors ranged secondaries, which i’d agree, though you can make melee work too. with good recharge, volcanic gasses is up nearly every fight. i’ve been enjoying earth/martial A LOT, and playing entirely from range, which i don’t usually do on dominators so that’s refreshing for me....plus it’s fun to throw shurikens at my enemies 😛

 

i can assume /fire would work nicely with earth, especially because it also seems to favor a slightly more ranged playstyle. combustion and breath of fire aren’t super strong, but the other attacks certainly are! the downside is you don’t get fire ball, which hurts aoe potential, but you can use patrons to make up for that

So this is the build I've been running as Fire/Earth up to lvl 32 atm. Any critique would be helpful as I'm still learning how to design builds to do certain things. This one was aiming for perma-dom and I "think" I was able to reach it with a few seconds overlap. As a side note, I was having issues with exporting the long and short form breakdown of the build. I had a 50 earth/fire on live back in the good old days. It is a fantastic pairing and /fire has only gotten better with fast snipes.

I've been trying to make a fire/earth/psi build, and it's turning out terrific except for the end cost, i'm managing to get about 1.41 end/sec but that's it, Less if i go tough/weave too but i can get about 37% melee, 32% ranged and 35% aoe defense on it. Don't want to skip maneuvers/tactics on it though. Also world of confusion is another damage aura, it's small, and not that good, but it houses the purple confuse set bonuses, but most importantly once you get that contagious confusion proc in it it makes a huuuuge difference.

Ignoring the high endurance costs of running Hot Feet and Mud Pots, they are unfortunately not proc monsters. When procs first came out they were awesome on toggles, but it was changed to be quite the opposite sadly.

 

That said, they could still be a good combo, I've not tried it myself.
