Energy/Kin help

I've never played Kinetics before. Think thematically this will be a cool techy toon. Looking for advice for Kin as what powers to take, how to slot, and general playstyle tips solo vs group. Any build ideas would be welcome as well if anyone has one to help give me ideas and get started.

I based this on my kintank fire/kin, but energy blast really takes things away due to the knockback. So, I just embraced it and chose the FF proc for everything instead. Feel free to switch it with the sudden acceleration kb to kd.

I have a Dual Pistols/Kin at 50, and while I'm no expert I do have a bit of experience with it now.

Most of the powers in /Kin are good.  The main exception is Repel, which is highly situational at best and hated if you use it wrong.  The other is the Super Jump power, which is cool but hardly needed, most folks will already have a travel power picked by the time you get it.  Pretty much everything else you should get, imo.

Good powers to add are Hasten, because most of your really good powers (Fulcrum Shift) are on long cool downs, and Tactics, because most of your powers require a hit-check and you really don't want to be missing a lot.

I completely disagree with your evaluation of Repel, when slotted with an Force Feedback +100% recharge proc and a kb to kd IO it becomes a very useful as a way to mitigate damage (hey, its the only thing kins get) and a great recharge boost when you are in melee range. Even if it is up only 20% of the time, that is still a 20% global recharge boost over time. This greatly helps the recharge on your damage capped nukes. Here is a DP/Kin corruptor build I made for someone a while ago, it was refined with all my knowledge of playing a kin. It has perma hasten (with FF procs in your DP powers), 68% s/l res, good E res, capped melee/ranged defense,  and 1450 HP. I strongly suggest you try it. 🙂

I completely disagree with your evaluation of Repel, when slotted with an Force Feedback +100% recharge proc and a kb to kd IO it becomes a very useful as a way to mitigate damage (hey, its the only thing kins get) and a great recharge boost when you are in melee range.

This sounds like a soloing strategy to me.  On teams Repel seems to cause more problems than it solves.  When I play on teams ( and I almost always do) I concentrate on buffing (I already have quite a bit of recharge) and I'm never in melee range unless some huge f--- up has occurred.

It's good to point out that Repel is useful, but I think we might also be talking about two vastly different situations here.

I use it all the time when I am on teams as well. It causes no problems as long as it has the kb to kd IO in it. I would never use it without that IO, I wouldn't even take the power without that IO. On a team I concentrate on buffs and damage, but I'm also in melee range (right behind the tank/brute scrapper) due to how fulcrum shift works. Regardless of if you are on a team or solo the recharge boost and knockdown are quite helpful.

But, yeah, repel is not worth it without that IO.

side note: Always amused seeing incarnates and accolades listed in builds for someone new to a powerset. (Of course that's an effective build 50+ levels from now)

Here's my take without giving too much away:

  • Teams love Speed Boost and Fulcrum Shift. (you'll always have a team)
  • Transfusion heals near the affected foe versus healing near the Kinetics character.
  • If you need to skip some powers - Repel, Increase Density and Inertial Reduction are good candidates (if you so choose).
    • Note: Increase Density can use Resist Damage sets and can make a nice mule for globals.
    • Note: Repel can be effective and fun but takes a lot of endurance (just never really used it due to end requirements).
  • Fulcrum Shift will pull aggro. Just know, if a brute or tank is engaged with more than their aggro cap, the extra mobs will turn and attack you. That said, FS as often as it is up!
  • You can easily do more /kin stuff than attacking on fast teams.

https://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Kinetics

Transfusion lvl 1 Ranged, Foe -End, -Regen, Team Heal
Siphon Power 2 Ranged, Foe -DMG, Team +DMG
Repel 4 Toggle: PBAoE, Foe Knockback
Siphon Speed 10 Ranged, Foe -SPD, Self +Recharge, +SPD
Increase Density 16 Ranged (Targeted AoE), Ally +Res(Smash, Energy, Disorient, Hold, Immobilize, Knockback), -SPD(Special)
Speed Boost 20 Ranged (Targeted AoE), Ally +Recharge, +SPD, +Recovery, +Res(Slow)
Inertial Reduction 28 PBAoE, Team +Jump
Transference    35 Ranged, Foe -End, Team +End
Fulcrum Shift 38 Ranged (Targeted AoE), Foe -DMG, Team +DMG

Here a /Kinetics blank that's fairly inexpensive and adjustable as needed:

I run Energy/Kinetics, Ice/Kinetics, Dual Pistols/Kinetics (in order of preference).

I've now seen it all.  One of the builds above has brawl 6-slotted.   I used to joke around about doing that.   😆

You should never use brawl, but getting the extra defense is worth it when you have the slots. If you or anyone can figure out other ways to get to the softcap without changing the necessary powers of the build, by all means do it and please show me the build.

I don't doubt your advice regarding the build.  It's just a different day in CoX.  That's all.  Old-timer's joke I suppose.

Yeah, IOs really changed the game completely and you could argue it has never really recovered due to trivializing a lot of the content.
