purplereign Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 Hey, all - I know I posted earlier about recommendations for a primary to pair with /sonic on a new defender I'm making. After many discussions today and yesterday, a bit more research, and some theorycrafting, we've settled on Thermal/Sonic. I've never built a Thermal before, and don't see much in the way of it done recently. Any chance someone has, or could help me make a really strong Thermal/Sonic build? A couple considerations: 1) Can be expensive. I have about 1 bill saved up and could muster up another 500mill or so if need be. 2) I want it to be SOLELY focused on teamplay. I have no interest or intention of soloing in the game, ever. 3) Would like S/L/E cap (f it's the better route) 4) Perma hasten 5) Trying to make the best team-oriented defender I can make. Can't reinforce this enough. I'm also chillin' in the discord and happy to chat about choices/options/etc. Here are my power choices: https://gyazo.com/e7fa1f49e8773d6747e8fb94b73cb6eb I'd like to keep it roughly like this. If there's a way to squeeze in a travel power, great, if not NBD. Thanks in advance for anyone that can help.
eknudson Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 If you're purely on teams, screech may be skippable to free up a travel power. A single-target, mag 3 disorient is nice to have soloing but will probably see less use on teams.
Doomguide2005 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 I personally wouldn't skip Screech, while the stun is perhaps unneeded in a team setting Screech is also the longest -resist duration blast in typical attack chains. Not to mention hammering that stray problematic minion that gets in your face or a teammates where that stun would be useful.
eknudson Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Reasonable. Screech's -res is roughly twice as long as the -res on shriek or scream. Same amount of -res, but lasts twice as long. If you're taking screech to use it for -res on hard targets I can see that. Personally when the defender on teams I am infrequently the one mezzing that annoying minion so if I had to pick between that and a travel power I'd take travel. But YMMV.
Darkir Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 I went the s/l/e route, as you get more recharge this way, but you lose out on soul drain so you won't be buffing your own damage much. This has s/l/e def softcapped, 63% s/l res, 173% recharge, perma hasten, and enough end recov to not have to worry. I still think a cold/sonic or kin/sonic is a better choice overall for you, but here is this. being so involved in my defender journey, Darkir. I leveled my Kin/Sonic to 36 or so, and legitimately felt like I had no time to use Sonic Blast attacks. I haven't even touched the proper build with sets, just some attuned SOs and I feel like I'm already spending 95% of the time rotating through Kin. Am I missing something? I appreciate your willingness to help me put a build together, even if it isn't the one you recommend. Many people I've spoken to suggest that Kin is simply better on a Controller or Corrupter. As a few people have mentioned, there's no hard numerical benefits to running it as a Defender primary. Not sure how true that really is, but if it is, I could understand the concern. Do you have any playstyle recommendations for Kin/Sonic that may change my mind or help me see it differently? Thanks again for all your help. You're awesome and I really, really appreciate it. EDIT: Also, looking at the Therm Build, Cauterize is a must for the way I want to play. I may have to tinker with some stuff to fit it back in. Cheers Edited January 2, 2020 by purplereign

I like this looks of this a lot. Sucks to lose aim, but damage is secondary for me anyways. The only thing I might try to move around is Melt Armor. 47 feels a tad too late for me, so I might try to swap it with tough and weave. Melt Armor at 32 Tough at 44 Weave at 47 Is there a reason you went Melt armor so late? Maybe I'm missing something.
Auroxis Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 The reasoning was that it's only an AV assist tool unless you're at high levels of recharge, which usually only arrive once your build is almost done. I think you can switch its level selection with Screech since that one's mostly used against AV's as well.
oedipus_tex Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 I personally would not skip Aim/Amplify because you want to ensure Heat Exhaustion never, ever misses. Popping Aim just before Heat Exhaustion is always a good idea. The builds look good overall. My main recommendation would be to switch to the Vigor Alpha slot. This gives +45% Healing, +33% Accuracy, and Endurance reduction. More importantly, it lets you underslot your heals and accuracy powers and get away with it. I'd do this and and drop Cauterize to just a single Heal IO. I despise Assault as a power. I think most builds are better served grabbing Tactics. Paired with Vigor as described above, this lets you side step slotting Accuracy in most powers whatsoever.

Doc Ranger Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 I am watching this thread with interest. I have never played either set and am ready to try something other than controllers. I need something new to spark my interest! I see many touting the attributes of Sonic blast but....it seems like every sonic blast build leaves out at least 3 powers. The above build leaves out four of them. That seems strange for being such an awesome set. I was looking at Kin/Sonic but jeez...Kins are a dime a dozen nowadays. A bunch of toons. Global DocRanger All on Excelsior.

That seems strange for being such an awesome set. I was looking at Kin/Sonic but jeez...Kins are a dime a dozen nowadays. I'm certainly no expert in the game, but I have learned to approach things a bit different from others... and I think that mindset applies to your question. Two points I should make... one general and one specific. The general point: People. Select. Too. Many. Attack. Powers. It's my biggest pet peeve in toon-building that I've seen (obviously this is all a personal opinion). It may not seem like it while leveling, but once you reach endgame, when you're in the 150%-170%+ recharge numbers, your attacks recharge so fast that you end up not using a lot of them. People often develop their own attack chains (that solve a variety of purposes) to determine their most effective DPS. Not only does that smooth your rotation of abilities, but it ensures that you're using everything effectively based on your own, personal recharge. Additionally, for defenders, you'll often see them skip long-animation powers and SNIPES. Doms and Blasters have a much easier time getting enough ToHit to get insta-snipe. Defenders is a lot harder, so it's often skipped. The specific point: At the end-game build, for example, you could go Scream > Shriek > Screech and repeat that endlessly with no holes. So why would you need Shout? As someone who is specifically focusing on the Defender aspect first, the blasting comes secondary (despite how good -res is) and so having a minimal, effective, tightened attack chain for Sonic feels best. A good way to test this is to go onto the test server, Pineapple, and try and make a build like this. Heck, take all of the abilities, slot up some recharge and you'll quickly see that you can't click powers fast enough to effectively incorporate all the attacks without wasting recharge (if that makes sense). I make it a priority to focus on building effective attack chains. Remember this ONLY applies to end game. In fact, I'd even recommend you take all the attacks while leveling (since respecs are all over the place) to get the attacks you want and then as you finalize your build, you can slim it down. Lastly, look how tightknit this build is. I can't even get everything I want with the minimal powers I've taken in Sonic. I still need to get amplify in there somehow and not sure what to give up. At the end of the day it's all based on what you want to play but hopefully this provided some perspective on how I think about it.
oedipus_tex Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) This is not a perfect build. It's what I could scratch up quickly based on my recommendations above. It loses some overall global Recharge and S/L resistance, but raised Ranged Defense to 35% (soft capped with one purple). Changes: I assumed Vigor is the designated Alpha slot. Incorporated Tactics as described above. Thaw: Dropped this because this build screams for Clarion as its Destiny slot for your own mezz protection. This build is too slot hungry to blow an entire slot on something you don't use that often. I'd take it while leveling up, then spec out of it when you get Destiny. Dropped Super Speed for Hover, which means your only travel power is temporary powers or Ninja Run. You can replace Hover with Super Speed and still be at S/L soft cap, at the price of the safety of being off the ground and +7.5% Recharge. In the proposed build, S/L defense is capped in or out of Hover, so you are safe whichever mode you are currently in. Although the global recharge of this build is slightly lower than the previous build, this is made up for with the +Chance for +100% Recharge proc in Shockwave. Shockwave isn't a perfect power, but is a chance for 100% knockdown, with all the utility that implies. Dropped Venegeance, I feel like the utility elsewhere in the build makes this worth it. You could reclaim it, if you really want it, by sacrificing Shockwave. However I personally prefer having Shockwave. You pick up the added utility of Web Envelope (AoE immobilize) and a pet. Considering nearly all your powers affect others and not yourself, adding a pet will add a lot of soloability to this character. It will also serve as a good source of extra DPS during boss battles. Regrets: I hate skipping Siren's Song. It's a very useful power due to its incredibly fast recharge. However I just couldn't fit it. You could replace Shockwave with this if you wanted, but you'd not get the +Recharge effect. The slotting implies you are hitting Amplify before hurling Melt Armor or Heat Exhaustion. Since Melt Armor includes -defense this should generally work well for you. Doomguide2005 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 I would generally not skip Assault. But then in general I would not skip Tactics either. Memories are old and foggy but I seem to recall that Assault is even yummier around -resist powers. Check what your power accuracy is with a base To Hit of 39 (set in Mids). If it's over 95 without Tactics for that power you should be okay for hitting the target
purplereign Posted January 3, 2020 Author Posted January 3, 2020 3 hours ago, oedipus_tex said: This is not a perfect build. |-------------------------------------------------------------------| This build is DOPE. I love it for a few reasons: 1) I had no idea you could get epic pool pets to perma (or close-to) which gets me very excited 2) I hate Thaw HAHA. It's a great power, but I don't like the upkeep portion of it. Totally fine with Forge. 3) Really clever use of Shout Thank you for putting this together so quickly!

I haven't built a Therm in a long time. I'm fairly impressed with what it can dish out. FYI if you were ok with sacrificing some Ranged Defense, you could get the pet up even faster and give him 20% chance to knockdown on every attack. Like this:

Like this: Generally speaking, I prefer being as tanky as possible without sacrificing my ability to support a team. A dead support is a useless support 🙂 So, I feel like I'm more likely to roll the first one? Maybe? Appreciate the alternative approach though, this looks cool too!
oedipus_tex Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 It's up to you. The reason the pet is so valuable is your primary set heals and buffs him, and your secondary debuffs enemies so he does more damage. So if you solo at all, I would probably go with the faster Recharging pet version. Losing ~3% defense probably doesn't matter all that much. You're still very close to capped with one purple (+12.5% defense + 32.1 = 44.6, so close to capped it makes no difference.) Note you could also rejigger which Expedient Reinforcement set pieces you pick. I just made a minor change to my slotting and got the pet Recharge down to 255. That leaves just a 15 second gap. Spamming Shockwave as appropriate will trigger the Recharge proc and make your pet perma, if he doesn't die. Which he shouldn't, since you're a Defender with shield and heals. BTW here are stats on the pet's armor: Not the most amazing out there, but the lethal and smashing resist wills stack with your Therm shields. So he will have ~42% resist to S/L and ~52% to energy, ~32% to evertything but Psi. 30% to Psi. 2

I haven't even touched the proper build with sets, just some attuned SOs and I feel like I'm already spending 95% of the time rotating through Kin. Am I missing something? Don't use siphon power unless you are fighting an AV or EB, use fulcrum shift only at all other times. Only use siphon speed to have two stacks. Use speed boost once every two minutes, preferably in between mobs. All other time should be spent blasting with Sonic -res powers. Use transference at your discretion, but I'd only use it if I really needed it, speed boost should be enough for your team. Hopefully those things alone should free up your time considerably and allow you to use your attack powers. Siphon power is not really necessary unless you are fighting a hard single target, one good fulcrum shift will cap most characters and two will cap everyone.
