Looks like a solid enough build.

I went a bit different direction on my sm/shield in that I use fire app. Ring and char fill in my st chain and give me some more ranged options. They both do good/great damage with procs and char procs buildup often.

I also use a lot of procs in all my attacks, so I need at least 1 more attack than some other builds.

Endurance is of course an issue as a result, but cardiac has solved that and plays nicely with further boosting the spectrum of resistances and upping my range (and telenukes).

Your aoe chain would probably best be Savage leap>AS boss>rending flurry (5 stacks means 15ft)) >shield charge.

you could flip shield charge to right after savage leap if you wanted. Just depends when you want the mitigation of the knockdown.

In my case I lead with fireball and after great deliberation I dropped rending flurry. Although I miss it sometimes.

Single target just make sure you use hemo after AS.

Exhaustion isn't a debuff, it just locks you out of the blood buffs. Semantics. Continuous 4 stack hemo is probably best, but crafting that chain isn't as easy as it sounds.

4 stack chain may be optimal for hemo, but it doesn't necessarily translate to the best for AS because it generally means firing off AS with 2 stacks of focus.

A chain of hemo, strike, slash, strike, AS will have much better chance of full focus for AS crit, but puts you at 5 stacks of blood...so exhaustion.

It could well be more damage than a 4 stack chain that lowers assassins focus. I dunno.

I've seen a st chain that used shred as well. I can't get behind that as I hate long animations, but it could work.

I use hemo, slash, ring of fire, slash, AS.

Sub char in for rof when up. Sub savage leap in for one of the slashes when up. There may  be better chains, but for things that live long enough to need it to cycle the immob is actually pretty handy to stop them from running.

I'm working on a savage melee stalker myself... it has crazy aoe potential. Which is not expected of a stalker. Ran some tests last night to see how many build ups I could proc... turns out you  can dish out four build ups consistently in between dark regeneration, rending flurry, fire ball and savage leap. self damage capping with savage's big radius attacks was so fun I forgot to test how to handle single target situations. I think in a full team 4 stacks might be better use for hemo since you are already at 30% crit rate... meaning AS will crit 96% at 2 stax of assassin's focus.

Two questions /  requests:

Frosticus would you mind sharing your build please?

Why are mobs fleeing like I'm a bugged burn patch. I SC in , bounce out then leap, AS, etc mobs are already sprinting for the hills (build as above)

They flee because your break their moral almost instantly.

Try a different order of your aoes.

leap>AS boss> rending flurry>shield charge.

That way shield charge should knock them all down around the time they are looking for the exit. You can more easily kill off survivors before they get back up. Plus leap will almost always apply the -res proc, which your follow up aoes will benefit from.

Part of what you are experiencing is why I like to add an epic aoe and at least some ranged attack option(s). More aoe output so less survivors running and ranged to tag them easier when they do.

You could also try out the right side of melee hybrid. That aura taunts.

Or a proc'd epic hold will one shot hold bosses

Tenebrous tentacles proc'd can deal a lot of damage form hide and keep most of the group planted. Especially with the superior frozen proc as that will plant bosses too. Paired with kd converted torrent, they aren't going anywhere.

Improved most things. I'm pretty sure I could do better with more time. Will look at it again later.

Gave it one more look and traded assault for grant cover, on teams its just so good its almost criminal not to take it. If you don't team you can ignore this.

grant cover is fairly important if you want to have even performance in the face of debuffers.

with double stacked active defense, deflection, and grant cover you have 70% ddr. A small purple can protect you pretty well when the -def starts to roll in. Without it you may need 2 to keep you from cascading.

additionally,  the above plus ageless radial gets you pretty close to /sr vs debuffers

In terms of build strategy, I’m finding these Stalker builds to be surprisingly complicated because of the many +Rech enhancements in the sets you need for Def bonuses working against optimal PPM chances for all the dmg and utility procs you want to sneak into builds.

Given that seems like you need to designate a few powers as dumps for all the detrimental to PPM chances +Rech enhancement IO's that you’re stuck with for set bonuses. Low Recharge powers make great dumps since they already will have poor proc chances, so you don't give up much be further ruining them.  🙂

It also seems wise to design your lvl 50 builds around the Alpha you’ll take, so you can leverage the bonuses to save on your power slotting.   Nerve or Vigor Core look like the ways to go to me here.   With Musculature being next best.   Nerve is worth about 3 - 4%  global Def on a Shield Stalker and the Acc means you can short slot many attack powers.   Vigor gives about 55HP, 2 HP/s Regen and the Acc & End Reduction will likewise let you get away with shorter slotting for End Reduction and should be very helpful with End Recovery issues.    (Agility and Spiritual are ruled out due to the +Rech undermining PPM chances…)

The ATO Hide proc needs to go into Assassinate to avoid accidental mid combat slooooow AS attacks.   But importantly at 5PPM for the Hide proc,   AS slotting needs to stay below 53% +Rech to keep at capped 90% chance to hide proc-ing.   This is a pain in ass because the Hide proc itself is 23% +Rech, so you can only spare another 30% +Rech slotting.   Worse yet all the ATO IO’s except the ACC/DMG have +Rech, meaning optimally you can never slot more than 3 from a set of ATO IO’s in AS without reducing your chance to hide.  For instance the full set of Superior Stalkers Guile drops your Hide chance down to around 71%.     Also, just the 23% from the Hide proc on it's drops your standard 3.5 PPM dmg procs chances down to a 77%.

On my take that means optimal AS slotting for most builds is probably  3 x Superior Guile for the +Def bonus using [Hide Proc], [Acc/Dmg], [Acc/Dmg/End/Rech], but leaving you at a relatively safe 46% +Rech.   That cuts standard 3.5PPM dmg procs down to a 66%, with Hecatomb still near cap at 86%.     The PPM calculations will be almost identical for Hemorrage, meaning to take advantage of procs you won’t be able to slot enough ATO’s there to get the set bonuses, so will probably be best frankenslotting.

True Grit can get you around 10% HP if slotted for Heal.  So if you can fit it in it's great with a 3 set of Numina’s (only actually uses two slots since you move the Numina proc you already had over from Health to grab the extra HP bonus from now having three…)

I don’t like Combat Jumping on Shield Defense characters.  Reason being that one of the justifications I have for taking CJ it's an ideal LOTG mule for a no additonal slot Rech bonus plus Immob protection.  But Shield already has enough powers to easily hit the 5 LOTG cap and has it’s own Immob protection.    In SD builds where you need the Defense from CJ  you can probably free up a power slot by going Nerve to make up the +Def.   I know a lot of people count on it to make Super Speed more vertically mobile.   My workaround is a Macro/Bind that toggles between SS and Ninja Run when I need to jump.   But this approach means you need to have the Recovery to run SS all the time.   And if you already have the recovery to spare, then on a Stalker you already have stealth.  In that case in tight builds maybe even better to skip SS,  freeing up a power slot and just use Ninja Run for getting around.  But travel powers are part of what makes the game fun, so use what enjoy.

These builds are all desperately short on slots in my experience.   Many people skip 'One with the Shield' but it's a good slot mule for unique's like Gladiator's +3% Def or Preventative Medicine +Absorb that only have value as a global unique.

What Frostricus already said about Grant Cover:   To be sturdy you really need it against any enemies that have any significant Defense debuffs.   For instance the difference against Crimoreans on ITF’s is immense.   I think it's more important on Stalkers since they don't have the HP and Regen/s to withstand what someone cleverly called 'Cascading defense failure' that happens when the debuffs start stacking letting continually more debuff hit you.

I'll try to whip up and post a sample build from what I was working on...

@Dr Causality You ever get around to coming up with a sample build for this? Very interested in seeing the results of your theory crafting. Been thinking about making my first stalker since Live, and you bring up some interesting points.

Darkir's build has some impressive global Rech and Smash/Lethal/Fire/Cold Resistance bonuses.      Here's a build based on my theory crafting above that gives up some global Rech bonuses and Resistance bonus to fit more procs into key powers that it tries to keep optimized for proc chances by keeping to low recharge enhancement in those powers.

  • The build expects you to have Alpha Vigor, which should offer enough Endurance reduction to drop Body Mastery freeing up power slots.   In addition to End Reduction, Vigor also allows for short slotting Acc.     Set bonuses are used to match the roughly 5% Max Endurance lost when giving up Superior Conditioning.   (But for comparison what doesn't immediately show in the stats is Body Mastery allowed for two additional Performance Shifter procs and there's no way to make that up.   Body Mastery builds will definitely have more Endurance recovery...)
  • The build focuses on HP bonuses getting a total of over +45% HP without Accolades.   The extra HP pairs well if you plan to use Rebirth Regen, since it significantly increases the HP/s regen delivered.
  • The FF proc in Shield Charge should make up for some of the missing +Rech.    But I'm concerned that the single Rech Enhancement in Active Defense will not be enough to safely double stack for Def Debuff Resistance.    In that case unless taking Destiny Ageless, it might necessary to steal a slot from somewhere for a 2nd Enhancement IO to ensure double stacking Active Defense.
  • One with the Shield is taken just as a Slot Mule for the Preventative Medicine+Absorb proc.
  • Shred is expected to be used as part of the attack chain.   Keeping it's Rech enhancement at zero gives the Achilles and Fury of the Gladiator -Res procs 42.8% to proc each, which is roughly a 67% chances of proccing at least one of the two each attack.  Since the -Res debuffs last 10s, while the power itself recharges around 3s this should give decent uptime on -Res against single targets.     I suspect that sustained -Res would contribute more dmg increases from your other higher dmg attacks following it, then you would lose from not having a better dpa power like Savage Strike in your chain.     Additionally, when fighting multiple enemies the cone from Shred gives more chances to proc Buildup recharge, which is a further global damage boost.

If it turns out you don't have End issues pre -Vigor, then switching to Alpha Nerve would offer the same Acc but nearly 4% additional Def.   This would let you drop and redistribute the Gaussian slots from Buildup.   I'd don't remember the threshold to stay under for build up or how the formula is slightly different  but the Recharge in the Gaussian's hurts the Guassian Buildup proc chances (and you really want those double buildup stacks...).

I really wanted to fit a Decimation Buildup proc in Moonbeam.  Even at the low 1 PPM rate Decimation has, at zero Rech Enhancement the fast cast version of Moonboom should be over 40% proc chance.   With the 36.7% Rech from the Manticore set that should still be a healthy 29%.   I kept CJ and SS in this build.  But personally I would swap those out and look to add Soul Storm with a Devastation Hold proc.   Being able to mag5 Hold a target at range can make solo life much easier when dealing with Sappers, Surgeons etc.

When soloing while leveling up, I liked subbing a Kinetic chance for KB in Assassinate instead of one dmg proc.   Knocking down tough targets I couldn't one shot from stealth gave me time to finish them off before they could use powers.    I would even add a Kinetic to Hemorrhage if I had the slot.   My hope would be to get the Endurance manageable enough on it's own perhaps with Accolades that I could switch to Nerve freeing up slots and power choices to fit in all those extras...

Correct Build linked. The previous mistakenly had Nerve instead of Vigor

@Dr Causality Thanks for the post. Very interesting take with focusing on all of the procs and dropping accuracy due to alpha choices, and using shred in the main rotation too.

Definitely something I'll experiment with. I'm a little concerned with managing endurance, even with vigor. I guess I'll have to level up my stalker a little more to see how it goes. Thanks again, really well thought out choices, and stalker is probably one of my least familiar ATs, so I appreciate the careful explanations as well.

Vigor is a global 33% Endurance Reduction.   1/3 less Endurance use is a massive difference.  Toggles limit our effective Recovery/s, but it's using all those powers in rapid succession that gets us into End issues.   In that sense End Reduction is worth much more than an otherwise equal End Recovery buff, because End Reduction not only reduces the costs of click powers, it even lets you go farther on your base 100 End reserve during peak over use.      But I agree you should test on Beta once free Incarnate gets added back before grinding a T4 Alpha...

Also there's Accolades:   It feels like a lot of tedious work to get them now, but Accolades make a massive End difference and for the reasons mentioned the large End reserve they give, goes even farther with Vigor's reductions....

I use cardiac 45% and still need ageless radial as my end can and does still tank at the speed you can clear full mobs.

I dont slot acc instead relying on global bonuses and tohit buffs sufficient to hit +3s at 95%

ageless core would obviously solve things but I like the debuff immunity that radial offers.

Something tells me that you have more procs and less End Reduction slotted than I used. 😉    But good to know as it, confirms @Rathys fears, warranting testing viability on Betaserver ...

As much as I want the Regen from Rebirth, Ageless is probably the way to go for the Def Debuff Resistance like you mention.

Thanks for the discussion. Looks like I'll have to figure out how to get on the beta server to test out some builds at some point. I've been pretty lazy with my builds since homecoming launched aside from my fire farmer, but building a stalker certain ways is pretty interesting with the ATOs and how procs work - so I'm willing to put a little more work into optimization.

It's a proc-tastic build. I'll post it up when I have a chance.

I originally planned rebirth as well because it is fantastic, but shield is pretty stable against most stuff at +4x8. I've found 90%+ ddr to be very valuable though. I cycle melee hybrid and OWtS in the hard stuff, so that full end bar after the "soft" crash is handy. I think a rebirth build could do just fine or even excel in most situations.
