Dark/Rad build critique

Rumbleweed

Recommended Posts

Haven't really played dark/ or /rad before. Threw a build together and would appreciate some critique. The build is softcapped (53%+) to S/L/E, and almost softcapped (42%) to range. Recharge is 97% before hasten. Resists are mixed.

As a dark defender I think it is better to go for Ranged/melee softcap over scorpion shield and ranged defense. Also you will get far more endurance with the panacea and performance shifter procs slotted.

I started from scratch and took all the powers you did, except I switched out scorpion shield for charged armor in the Mu pool. The results are an incredibly tanky defender even without an alpha. max 75% res to s/l AND energy, softcapped melee/ranged def, and hasten is almost perma (121.7 seconds). So, now you can choose whichever alpha you want or exemplar low and still be amazing.

I should note that you could probably keep all these values and get perma souldrain as well by going dark mastery, but you'd need to drop flight and afterburner.

I had a dark/rad defender back on live which I remade as a rad/dark corruptor on HC. Ignoring the defense/resistance, I have a few suggestions:

  • Slot Fearsome Stare with accurate tohit debuff sets. The base fear duration is long enough and everything will be dead before it expires. On the other hand, the tohit debuff is the same strength as Darkest Night and really benefits from enhancement.
  • Dark Servant should be slotted with a combination of accurate tohit debuff and accurate healing sets. Most of what he does is debuff and heal. Slotting the hold is a bit of a waste.
  • Don't bother slotting boxing, especially on a defender.

With the PPM changes it is no longer very good to proc it out.

  • 2 weeks later

Sorry, got distracted by my fleet of alts — er, by a Nemesis plot.

Darkir, by softcapping, I’m guessing you mean the 45% cap, rather than the higher incarnate soft cap of 50 something?

Anyway, I’ll take a look when I’m not at work

Also, thanks for the slotting advice on the fear and pet. I’ll see if I can work that in.

Procs work completely differently now. Instead of a flat chance like 10% to fire, they have a "per minute" rate and it goes into a complex formula to determine the chance of triggering. The longer the recharge, the higher the chance, to a cap of 90%.  Area effect is also a factor. Consequently all the very low damage very fast recharging powers that became great mules for damage procs are pretty trash again. Rains also got nerfed hard and only check 1 time when they're first used instead of like on every single damage packet.

On the other hand a power that's like a 20 second recharge single target stun that does 5 damage will probably fire every proc in it (90% chance ish) every time you use it. I'm finding Suppressive Fire in Pistols is suddenly doing about 140 psionic damage thanks to 2 procs I stuck in it...

And speaking of Procs for Darkness, there's a lovely proc you can put in Dark Servant called Cloud Senses: Chance of Negative Energy Damage. All of the Dark Servant's powers except for Petrifying Gaze but including Chill of the Night can potentially fire that baby off.

See me on Excelsior as Eridanus - Whisperkill - Kid Physics - Ranger Wilde - The Hometown Scrapper - Firewatch - and more!

So here's the newer version, going with the 45% Def(Melee, Ranged) and 75% Res(S/L/E), instead of my earlier version with higher def and lower res. I also took into account the slotting suggestions for Fearsome Stare and Dark Servant.

  • Moved a slot from Maneuvers to Fearsome Stare, so that the Ranged Def we had with the old Dark Servant slotting is now carried by the new Fearsome Stare slotting. Melee Def went down a teensy bit, but is still over 45%.
  • Swapped slotting for Tactics and Aim. I've read that the buildup proc will fire a lot more on Tactics on teams.
  • Swapped out Ragnarok in Neutron Bomb for 3 Superior Vigilant Assault and 2 Positron. Kept the 10% Recharge, does more damage (according to mids), and now have the def ato proc as well. Lost the KD proc, but don't think that'll be a big deal in the long run

As always, the levels I acquire powers aren't accurate. I'm only L20 so far, but it's playing out fun.

Also, while I can apparently build for +Rech on my own, I'm clearly a rank noob at building for softcaps 🙂
