Dark / Savage Build - Shadowdruid Concept (Looking for pointers!)

So I'm new to builds, but I'm learning bit by bit, mostly by cobbling together things other people do and playing around with stuff. Right now I'm set on a Dominator character. Rapid fire:

 

  • Character concept is a villain akin to a Shadowdruid, so basically the evil counterpart to a druid. He can shapeshift into a werebear, cast shadow and weather magic, command animals, etc.
  • Always PvE, and want to be successful both solo and on teams. Don't really need to solo AVs, though that'd be an added bonus.
  • Cost is no object, really aiming for the stars here.
  • Tested this for a bit on Beta, on a couple +4/x8 Council mishes and seemed pretty damn dangerous.

 

I stitched this together based on a couple different Dark/Savage builds I saw around here. What I'm really looking for is general comments or criticism, as well as specifics as to things I may have missed or messed up. Still getting into meat of Mids Reborn and min/maxing, so I'm sure I overdid something here or undercut there. Let me know what you guys think!

If your goal is super high recharge then you nailed it 🙂

cycling rune and melee hybrid should make you pretty robust

 

I find feral charge is pretty subpar without procs. I'd still use it even in a world without procs, but I'd just use it for the great movement.

 

I'd strive for either 32.5%, 40%, or 45% def to s/l

That puts you 1 small purple, or barrier at lowest, away from softcap.

Here is the build I use:

 

With Dark Control, other than AVs, you're pretty well covered if you have 30 or more to a Defense, since all of your control powers also lower ToHit. So you need to shore that up with some Resistance and Healing.

 

During the times Hoarfrost is up, you have an extra 500 HP, which translates to a huge amount of effective Resistance. Then on top of that the heal scales to your hit points. Unfortunately Hoarfrost can't be perma'ed, it has a 30 second downtime.

I feel like you guys have chased recharge a bit too much imo.

I run at 90% global which is enough for perma dom. Once you add in the rech from blood stacks it is usually enough for perma  hasten.

 

This is the proc-tastic approach I took.

It's intended to be a barrier build, which means you are "softcapped" to s/l/e/n/ranged vs +3's that you hit with fearsome stare. 

 

Dog is a good pet, I don't use most pets though.

Hm, I'll have to consider all the Procs. Is it worth it? I actually didn't consider taking Possess for that Contagious Confusion proc - I hear that's fun!

I notice both of you don't bother with Vicious/Maiming Slash and Rending Flurry, leaving you with only the one attack and the teleporting Feral Charge. Why only those two? What's your guys' attack chains look like?

When I tested on the Beta Server I was still figuring that out, but at +4/x8 Council I'd slam the mob with controls, then teleport in, build up Blood Frenzy, then unleash Rending Flurry. Then I'd mop up with my pets, Unkindness, and Call Hawk as necessary.

For me, viscous slash, super bird of death, and feral charge are usually "enough" single target attacks.

 

If it is a long st fight then I start to mix in unkindness as it has 2 -res procs.

 

Nothing wrong with rending flurry. I took it on my grav/sav because wormhole packs everything nice and tight, so you don't need 5 stacks. I find that on my dark/sav the mobs are often a bit too spread to make good use of it unless it is at 5 stacks, but I usually fire off a hawk before then so I don't hit 5 often.

I find both the pet and Shadow Field too good to pass up. But your build inspires me. You always did manage to out build me on live, and here you strike again. 😎

Gotcha. I take it all the fancy procs are good for extra damage, and diversified damage at that? I feel like it must be worth it to lose out on all the set bonuses in @oedipus_tex's build? 

 

Also, more on the idea of a "barrier build", since I'm a newb: do you mean that your fearsome stare and other holds end up reducing ToHit to the point that your defense is softcapped? So like, your holds are your barrier? Not exactly sure what you mean @Frosticus.

Damage procs are always a good idea if you can fit them in, especially in longer Recharge powers.

 

One thing I note about your build Frosticus is that when Spot Prey is down, several powers don't have great Accuracy even with Tactics running. It looks like against +4s, Unkindness is at 80%, Vicious Slash is at 68%, Call Hawk is at 69%. It may not matter in actual play because you have -Defense in Sleet and Unkindness. However it does make me wonder if you'd be missing AVs a lot since you can't debuff their Defense by much. May not matter though since AVs are mostly encountered on teams and usually a few players are running Tactics.

 

Your build definitely clears average spawns faster than mine and I am inspired to revisit several other builds based on it.

Apologies. I swapped some stuff around at the last minute and just glanced at unkindess, forgetting that it has an acc bonus.

This one should get you 95% vs +3's all the way down to lvl 27. Perma dom doesn't realistically start till lvl 39 unless you really push the blood stacks prior.

 

I don't find I fight +4's very very often once you level shift. Most everyone runs lower lvl tfs at easier difficulties.

What I mean by a "barrier" build is that it uses destiny barrier, which at its lowest buff is 5% def (all).

Fearsome stare is an 11.7% debuff vs +3's in this build. So that plus 5% from barrier is 16.7%. So anything at 28.3% def or higher will be "softcapped" at 45%. 

So that is s/l/e/n and ranged.

 

There is definitely some things that doesn't work out well against though haha, but overall you get a pretty sturdy experience for most stuff.

If you can free up another slot, I'd add forcefeedback too.

 

Doggo is a really good pet. True to life :)

Shadow field is a great aoe hold and debuff field.

 

I don't actually use possess very often. Nor do I use living shadows much. I'm stuck with shadows, or maiming slash though. Either would work for me I suppose

I'm not sure I understand the proc slotting in Call Hawk... as far as I can tell, a normal damage proc does less damage in it than a damage IO, at least until the damage cap is reached, and probably excluding a purple damage proc, because the power's base damage is so high. So it seems to me, that it makes sense to slot up damage first... I use 5xApoc for the set bonuses, but if I were trying to max out its damage, I think I'd go with about 3 IO slots to max out damage and maybe add in a bit of Acc and End reduction, and then put in the damage procs. Granted, the damage procs are up front damage rather than DoT, but the DoT is pretty quick.

The nice thing about the Dark pet is it does -ToHit. This translates, in a roundabout way, into +Defense.

 

You can also put Force Feedback: Chance for Knockdown there for some real fun. It will add 20% chance to kd to all of the pet's attacks.

 

The dog is also generally well behaved, unlike say Gremlins or Imps. I've rarely had issues with him aggroing nearby groups before I'm ready.

I'm not sure what you mean? The slotting I use has 98% dam enhancement and 4 damage procs.

I like neg energy procs because they are rarely resisted. 

 

A 3.5ppm proc vs 33% dam enhancement below alpha range is more or less a wash. The enhancement adds a bit more damage, the proc is probably a better damage type. 

 

Hawk at base has a 91% (90) chance to proc 3.5ppm.

You are correct that you definitely want to get good damage enhancement value into the power as it does 200-235 base damage. 

 

There is certainly value in getting hawk to cycle faster. I favor hitting harder a bit less often, but that is just my preference.

Okay, just to throw a wrench into things, here is my insane Dark/Sav build. She is designed to be really, really savage. Basically, kill before being killed. The nice thing is, she can stay at range and cycle her mez powers, or she can get in there and really rip face, depending on the circumstances. Her armoring is garbage, but her kill-rate is faster than my scrappers. She definitely suffers when fighting those kinds of things that explode on defeat.
