Been kicking around retooling my Darkness Control / Empathy controller and I can't seem to get him to where I want him, partly due to a couple of constraints I have in place: I want to keep Invisibility, and I need to squeeze in Tough/Weave and Maneuvers/Tactics (I assume) and I'm trying to do some Proc Monstering along the way.  Problems I've run into include I ended up without any kind of Fly (Mystic Flight would be fine), slots that I had to drop somewhere that weren't truly necessary, perhaps skipping a power or two I shouldn't have, and I was hoping to keep him worth exemplaring down.  The current state of my work on his build is really not the best, and who knows what opportunities I may have missed.   Does anyone have any advice?  Also, need help choosing proper Incarnate powers.

Thanks for reading!

Some things I've noted

Resurrect--> just give it the base slot.  Even with massive global recharge you aren't going to get the recharge low enough to use it on several folks at a time unless your team is very patient.

Clear Mind --> kind of the opposite of Resurrect.  The base recharge is 4 sec.  You'll have enough recharge already to knock it down plenty so extra slots for recharge aren't needed.

Personally I'd use 3 slots in Maneuvers and Weave.  Use a freed up slot to get the Steadfast 3% defense unique added in (unless I missed its presence).  Between adding the unique and using boosters you should add defense overall to the build.

Consider Membranes in Fortitude, they are practically designed for Fort adding defense, to hit and recharge to the power.  Fort can hold a LotG +recharge as well.  I see only 4 in the build ... unless I overlooked the 5th.

Have to run but I'll look at the build more later.

Some of those weird extra slots were because I'd get stuck at assigning slots at say 38 and needed to drop them somewhere, you know?  In fact, perhaps every one you mentioned there where victims of this; it's been awhile since I made this before giving up, which is why I dumped my failure here for the collective laughter and derision of the forum, ha ha!  That's not a bad idea for Fortitude though.  I may have missed an opportunity to skip a LotG recharge because one of the sets had a +6.25% as well, but again, I don't recall anymore - so I'll keep that in mind too, thanks.

What is your main goal for your AT? Are you looking to do some good single target dmg with procs? Are your looking to take down mobs?

You have to start slow and build off a smaller idea.

First I’d drop resurrect. I hate that power on my emp. Everyone has self Rez. It wouldn’t  fit your badass theme.

Good question!

First off, mainly I'm just aiming to make him more effective at, well, anything.  I tend to level up willy-nilly, like hit the next level, go take a look at powers and think "I'll go with that for now" without giving it too much thought (it's only lately I've started trying to have a build ready to go before I even roll a new toon) and while he's playable enough, he's not, you know, super great.  He needs more survivability for instance, I think his current defense numbers fall into like +/- 20% or so.

So, in no p[articular order:

  • Survivability
  • Reasonable damage via procs (I don't usually go for single target work, so we'd be looking at mobs)
  • Recharge is always good for Controllers
  • Other factors previously mentioned (keeping Invisibility, wanted a Fly, etc.), so "not jettisoning anything that ever mattered to me about the toon just to chase numbers"; I know he won't be BEST zOMG, but I want better.

I did some more work on the build last night after taking him on another MSR, and assuming Mids wasn't glitching, I think I managed to put something together that might work, which I'll post when I can (I work 12 hour shifts right now).  Even still, I'd still appreciate some of you fine folk giving it a once over to make sure I didn't make any obvious mistakes or miss better options.

Oh, and I want to (and did) keep Resurrect, teams that face plant a bit get real frustrating real quickly without it, and, apparently, you'd be surprised how often I've had to use it.

Still thinking Resurrect is overslotted.  Personally if I took it I'd drop an endred in it particularly on a controller --> no vigilance and its end cost is not low (26 iirc).  My computer died but what does Mids' say the recharge time is with 2 recharge slotted and ask yourself how long is the team going to  want to wait around for multiple castings vs convert inspires to wakies or otherwise use p2w powers etc. to get back in the fight.  And how much does the second recharge bring that time down?  Is the slot worth it there?

Heal Other-> Why Miracle?  Cheap set I'd look at Doctored Wounds (+recharge at 5) or expensive Panacea (again +recharge at 5).  Maybe a 6th slot for one of the healing set uniques or move slots to Health for those.

Hasten -> two slots boosted to +5.

Invisibility -> Not worth the slots for defense, 1 slot def/global +recharge

Maneuvers-> better investment but I'd still think strongly about reducing to 3 slots.  On the flip side 4 slots gives +accuracy

Tactics-> think about 1 endred (in the second slot) vs the endred/to hit if end usage on the build is problematic.  Possibly +5 boosted either way.

Fortitude -> potential spot for some added slots.  I'd be looking to push towards +20% defense buff.

RA -> I try to keep the recharge on this and RegenA within a few seconds of each other on my Empaths.  One less thing to worry about.  When one is ready the other will be and use them 'together'.  Dead computer so can't tell how close yours are, only internet is s phone.

Got to head to work.  I'll be back.

Mostly I agree with Doomguide except with one thing... if you take the slots out of Invisibility, put them in Maneuvers and add a pair of IOs there. I don't see Kismet or the +Resist IOs in any Defense power. They're expensive, but they're still only 3 IOs that add up to about a single purple or so. I would prefer them to just another 1% or so in Invisibility.

I kind of just was messing around and I did something like this to my ill/emp.
The play style was fun for me. I was almost able to do +4/8 solo with something like this. Tinker with it.

I never played dark so I just went with the powers you have. Lvl49 power was just a filler.

I still can't take Rez I'm sorry. But I did take the Incarnate power that will Rez 2 people on a 2 min cool down
And I went with the incarnet power that procs dmg when people are held for even more dmg procs.

My mids builder is not updated and I don't know how to update it. I struggled to just get it to work on my 2010 Macbook. And it lags hard so I kind of semi rushed it. Your auras are at 40 second to a minute cool down. So you get some nice Regen burst for big fights.  And you get a build up!

Got to head to work.  I'll be back.

This is a funny build in that a number of powers don't really need high slotting, so there are levels during slotting where I have to assign some somewhere, but I've already filled up the previously-chosen powers and can't yet apply it to powers not yet taken.  Sometimes i just dropped those slots where they fell for a chance to chase a few small set bonuses, because why not - like Maneuvers' +Acc.  Proc monstering sometimes means not slotting much Acc to make room for more damage procs (this build currently has a total of +66 Acc via set bonuses).

Fair point on Heal Other's Miracle; I may have taken it here because that's what's already slotted in my current slipshod build (so hey, that's saved money!), or for the (admittedly small) +defense (AoE); its unique is already slotted in Health.   And slotting Panacea adds some expense, but it's not a bad thought at all.  I didn't even know there's an Incarnate power you can take that gives you a resurrect power - you can see why I was asking for suggestions on which to choose.

I think the "where do I put this?" problem also added that third slot to Hasten; I ended up moving that third one to Fort, then the second slot from Resurrect as well and topping off Fort by four-slotting LotG again, which now gives it 57% def it says (and more Acc), so that's a great idea.

Rec Aura recharges almost exactly twice as fast as Regen Aura, so... I can live with that, but I do understand the impulse.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Kismet: I'm not as up on the difference between Acc and To Hit as I should be, would that be better than the set bonus I'm getting from having the four in Invisibility?  Thinking about this, some of those Proc Monstered powers might still be low on Acc, even with the set bonuses as-is.  I could of course drop a proc and add in some +Acc or another to cover.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Hops' build looks fine to me, I wish it had the data chunk/link for me to open it in Mids!  Lazy, self distrusting simpleton that I am, I'm generally more prone to lifting a build from the forums that trusting myself, so I'll have to give that some thought.  Right now I'm fairly flush with money, but on the other hand I have to admit it does looks pricey however.

Initially I was focused more on trimming slots rather than what you might due with extra slots generated (then if I could use Mids' ☹ I'd build back adding slots for things like a Kismet or purely for set bonuses). I agree with Coyote about looking to add in some uniques such as Kismet.  I generally try to fit in Kismet somewhere in any build along with the +end and +recovery uniques and actively seek the accolades that add endurance and health.  As for does your build specifically need more To Hit vs more Accuracy depends a lot on what difficulty settings you generally run.  Typically you get more benefit with +To Hit when fighting +3, +4 or even harder mobs.  +Accuracy gets better bang with mobs with a lower relative level to you.  Mostly that's due to your scaling base To Hit.  Versus +4 your base is 39% to hit.  Even level mobs you're sitting at 75%.  So essentially barring everything else you start off at nearly half the to hit vs +4 as you do vs +0 mobs.  Accuracy acts as a multiplier on the  'final' to hit.  The Attack Mechanics page on Paragon Wiki is very thorough on the topic)

And you could do far worse than use Hops' build as a template.

Fortitude is Empathy’s best power, if you go Empathy you should get Fortitude at 20. Move other things around if you have to.

If you go primal forces then get power boost so you can use it in conjunction with fortitude.

Then make it your mission to keep it on 3+ people at all times.
Fortitude will have more impact on teams than anything else, except for maybe Adrenaline Boost.

I ended up sticking, sort of to my second build up there.  Hops' looked good, but terribly expensive and retrofitting to this build alone broke my bank (worth it!), so I'm kind of glad I did.  I'm still waiting for a few lowball bids to come on, but I haven't had a chance to take my 'troller our for much of a spin yet, other than another MSR, which he did just fine on.  I did rearrange to take Fortitude at 20 though, so thanks for that.
