Can't decide on AT combo

Hmmmmmm they won't be too different in mechanics or how they play. It will just take you a little longer to kill things. If you use more dmg procs instead of the -res procs, things will even out a bit more (solo at least).

I only have done one build with IOs, but one of the biggest takeaways is due to increase of survivability you can focus more on damage.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute. 8. Emma Strange: Ill/dark. 9. Nothing But Flowers: Plant/storm Controller. 10. Obsidian Smoke: Fire/dark Corr.

Yes, you can focus more on damage because you don't need to heal or avoid things as much, but no amount of IOs can improve your base damage or change your damage cap. Procs do allow you to get around these two things with proper slotting, but the fact remains that a corruptor will still have higher base dmg and a higher cap. Time has so much defense with farsight that a corruptor can also focus on procs with little downside. You do get less resistance, but lets look at what that actually means in real terms when we look at the corruptor and defender builds I posted.

10000 s/l damage comes at the defender. Only 5% of it hits because we are at the softcap, so 500 damage hits us. We resist 75% of that, so only 25% of 500 actually damages us for 125 damage total.

10000 s/l damage comes at the corruptor. Only 5% of it hits because we are at the softcap, so 500 damage hits us. We resist 62.1% of that, so only 37.9% of 500 actually damages us for 189.5 damage total.

That is a pretty significant difference in damage taken, but we could change our slotting to remove procs in order to get to the shared 75% resist cap for defenders/corruptors. The resistances for the other damage types are very similar between the two builds and so I don't think it's necessary to hash out all the numbers as they will be roughly equal. I also know that with temporal mending and chronoshift healing us that the extra damage received can be mitigated. However, the damage on the corruptor will still be higher than the defender, so let's look at that too. (Dead things also deal no damage to you, so the quicker you kill things the less damage you take)

Neutron bomb on a defender does 32.53 base damage. We will say we get 6 mobs in our soul drain (I find this to be a more realistic number than 10 in a real game scenario), with aim+gauss proc and assault for a total of +236.75% damage. We then add in our enhancements+alpha for a total of +365.49% damage. We could add vigilance when solo for another +30% damage, but +300% is the damage cap on a defender (or 400% total) and so we only get to multiply our damage by 4, so 32.53x4=130.12 damage. Then let's go ahead and say we used melt armor right before that and the achilles proc went off for a -50% res total, so 130.12x1.5=195.18 damage total. If the achilles proc does not go off it is 130.12x1.3=169.16 total damage. We could add both -res procs for 130.12x1.7=221.04 damage, but its the same on a corruptor the proc chances are quite low there and so I am sticking with the 195.18 neutron bomb defender total.

Neutron bomb on a corruptor does 37.54 base damage. We will say we get 6 mobs in our soul drain, with aim+gauss proc and assault for a total of +200.3% damage. We then add in our enhancements+alpha for a total of +329.04% damage. We are not at the damage cap on a corruptor (it's +400%, in other words 500% total) and so we get all of that on the corruptor for 37.54x4.2904=161.06 damage. Then let's go ahead and say we used melt armor right before that and the achilles proc went off for a -42.5% res total, so 161.06x1.425=229.51 damage total. If the achilles proc did not go off, then the total will be 161.06x1.225=197.30 total damage. If both -res procs were on a target it would be 161.06x1.625=261.72 total damage. Also, a corruptor's neutron bomb could scourge solo or while on a team possibly adding more damage.

In most powersets the defender's ability to reach the softcap in defenses easily allows them to then focus on procs. That is not the case with time manipulation though, as you get so much defense from farsight and -tohit from time's juncture, that a corruptor can focus on procs with only taking a medium hit to s/l resistances (well mostly s/l resistances). Therefore time manipulation is often better on a corruptor if you are focusing on doing damage yourself. If you want to focus on buffs, then by all means go defender, farsight alone is great, but a defender's power boost+farsight is incredible. Damage-wise though, corruptors will win, especially when you are on a team and you get other +damage buffs from your team, while being able to scourge. The extra damage you take from not having as high s/l resistance is easily mitigated with chrono shift and temporal mending, so yeah, I'd go corruptor for this combo.

P.S. I should note that there are actually only a few powersets that I consider better on a corruptor from a solo damage+survivability perspective (when fully IO'd out). Time is one of them, so is Cold, Kinetics, and FF. All the others end up being better on a defender solo because of the extra -res or extra +def/res they inherently get and vigilance is a little better than scourge on most sets solo.

P.P.S I should also say that the corruptor ATOs are just a little bit better than the defender ones in my opinion.

I just updated my fire/kin corruptor kintank build in the corruptor forums. You may get some ideas for your build too.

I have recently been playing a time/rad with more of a focus on procs. Time is a superb defender primary for proc builds as it helps all four of the things that become an issue when you mostly leave set bonuses out: defence, recovery, recharge and tohit. I much prefer this on a defender than a corruptor for a few reasons. Firstly you get farsight and chrono shift earlier which really helps the leveling up process - in a straight choice between delaying the nuke or chrono shift by 6 levels I'll delay the nuke. Also procs really do even out the damage differential between the two AT's and I've found scourge to be disappointing every time I've played a corruptor. If I want to simply blast away in a team then blasters seem by far the better choice - they can just build for defence set bonuses as they get so much damage and so end up being just as tough, they get huge recovery from the sustains and they are far simpler and quicker to use in combat with no buff/debuff prep time.

At the moment I don't see the space in the game that corruptors are supposed to be occupying - squeezed out by proc built defenders on one side and the much improved blasters on the other. Scourge really could do with a buff in my opinion.

Anyway - the current version of my build is below.

Yes, you can focus more on damage because you don't need to heal or avoid things as much, but no amount of IOs can improve your base damage or change your damage cap.

The key issue is 'damage cap'.

There are three ways Corruptors beat Defenders on damage:

  • Damage Scale. Corruptors have a 15% higher damage scale.
  • Scourge. Corruptors have this damage-amplifying special ability.
  • Damage cap. Corruptors have a 20% higher +damage cap.

However, most Corruptor builds really only get the first advantage in most cases. Scourge generally has minimal impact except with Rain effects and against AV/GM. The damage cap tends to only be relevant with Kinetics since you can't reach even the Defender's +damage cap under normal conditions.

So it's a 15% damage advantage for most builds. That advantage is rapidly eaten into by superior -resist and +damage debuffs/buffs. Defenders also have a significantly easier time meeting defensive breakpoints, allowing them to slot more procs.

You also run into the 'middle child' syndrome. If you're talking about situations where the +damage cap matters, then Blasters absolutely destroy Corruptors for damage output. If you're talking about situations where you primarily care about the support aspects of your set, the Defender advantage multiplied across a group grants them far more effective damage than Corruptors can possibly make up with their personal damage advantages.
