I have a Rad/Bio Brute I have had for quite some time that has been really great so I kinda know what Rad melee attack powers I like. But I've never tried Rad armor nor do I know proper slotting or what powers are skippable.

I'm want something for endgame toughness...not building a farmer.

Outright damage output is not priority...so Proc maximizing isn't my focus. My Rad/Bio has no procs (other than what come in the sets I have slotted already) and the damage output is acceptable to me. I am really going to defense/resist/rech bonuses so he can be as tough as possible.

Any assistance with info or sample builds is appreciated.

I've played Rad/Rad for both Tanks and Brutes.

I've found that Rad/Rad tank, with its higher HP count is generally more pleasant to play.

I've had well-built Rad/Rad configurations:

I'm in a happy place!
I'm in a happy place!
I'm*DEAD!!!*

No warning.  Just "French The Floor!" It's HIDEOUSLY annoying.

With the Rad/Rad tank, I hybrided it, going for Defense boosts up into the late 30's and early 40's where I started running into lots of Arachnos which just disassembled me.

I then rebuilt to maximize Resist.  And the difference was INCREDIBLE.

Rad/Rad is what made me go back and rebuild my Fire and Elec armor tanks.

If you want to be godlike, pick anything.

If you want to be GOD, pick a TANK!

I have been considering Rad/Elec Armor also but so many posts here about "best brute" or "toughest this or that" always have people praising Rad Armor and Dark Armor. I have a DM/DA brute at 45 right now and even though it's fairly resilient, I have lost interest in it. So I thought of trying Rad Armor. Do you think Elec Armor is better for most content? I have not given Elec armor a shot yet either.

Honestly, on a heavily optimized build, Rad, Elec and Fire are all about equally survivable.

Dark, Shield, and Invuln are roughly comparable.

With proper planning, WP can be absolutely AMAZING, you're just NOT going to be the toughest thing out there.  But you'll still be PLENTY tough.

With Elec armor, I'd SUGGEST, if you have a slot somewhere, toss at least ONE KB Resist in there.  Because the minute your feet leave the ground, you're knockable.

Maybe just switch to tank?

With the damage rebalance, while you're losing SOME damage, there's just something to be said for being a flat-out immovable object.

Here's my Elec/Elec/Mu as an example.

How would you build a elec/rad brute? Mine is now lvl 14 but as I'm a tanker at heart I have trouble with the whole brute thing. (Sorry to hi-jack the thread)

Again, while leveling up?  Go for the mixed Defense/Resist setup (Fighting-Kick/Tough/Weave, Leaping-Combat Jumping, Leadership-Maneuvers).

Once you hit your mid-30's, early 40's, start on your Resist-centric rebuild.

Maybe something like this:

So now I’m on the fence between tanker Rad or Elec armor coupled with Rad melee.

I like the idea of two damage auras  if I went with Elec. But which is tougher for endgame content. If they are very close then I might want the extra Dmg aura.

They're both about equally tough.

Throw a dart blindfold, to pick one.

Either way should be a blast.

How do resist sets work out in the end? Resist in general seem fairly subpar compared to defensive sets, but not sure if getting to 90% (or 85) makes it comparable to an SR or something.

Posted

resist sets are, in general, much more powerful than defense sets, because they are designed that way, and also because few enemies have -resist, while EVERYONE has -defense. Also, it is easier to add meaningful defense with set IO's than it is to add meaningful resist to a defense set. Purple patch also means that enemies above you have a much higher chance to hit than they gain damage, which means against +4's defense cap has a much more difficult time than 90% resists.

That being said, though, I too tend to prefer defense sets.

Rad ihas resistance to pretty much EVERYTHING, electric can cap psi and cold better but has zero toxic, but starts out with slightly higher resists.
Electric has a more powerful tier 9 that crashes hard, rad has a tier 9 that crashes very very softly but is not quite god mode.

Electric gives 20% -recharge, rad gives between 12.5% and 25% based on how many enemies are nearby.

Electric's status protection works better on the ground, rads is slightly better overall (but not much)

Electric has an end drain recovery attack, rad has a 'hurt everything and heal nearby teammates' attack.

Electric has a damage aura and emergency heal, radiation has an emergency heal that comes with -regen and an emergency barrier

They are very similar, but can wind up building quite differently. Electric armor tends to eventually make enemies whiff, while radiation is ever so slightly more unkillable, but they are both very close thematically.

Going to disagree here.

Neither is actually "more powerful" than the other.

Resist provides a relative damage reduction on an ongoing basis.
And it heavily resists being debuffed by it's own quantity.

But Defense, in general, provides for complete damage avoidance.
At caps, Defense and Resist generally result (mathematically) in the same levels of damage being taken over time.
At incarnate levels, and Incarnate Defense Cap, Defense has a slight edge.

But, in the end, they're roughly equal.

The difference between Resist and Defense is whether you prefer being ground down over time, or taken out by a lucky hit. The original version of Regeneration, with Instant Healing as a toggle, relied on outhealing the incoming damage, which left it vulnerable to big alpha strikes and resulted in a Regen character hitting bottom about 25% of the way into a fight, where they dropped enough opponents to get ahead of the incoming damage, after which they were functionally unkillable. But what works far better than one or the other is a good mix of both Resist and Defense; back during live, when I did some analysis of Regen vs. Resist vs. Defense, even relatively small amounts of Resist and Defense on top of Regen gave disproportionate benefits, and similarly for each of the others as primary protection. So it doesn't really matter which one you pick for your primary, as long as you don't try to make it your sole type of protection.

I've had a lot of fun with my Rad/Rad Brute, although I have to admit that the slower animations aren't as optimal for building Fury as a faster-animating powerset would be. However, your auras can make up for that as long as you can keep enough mobs around you, which the heavier-hitting Rad attacks can work against. But it balances out; Rad Melee is not significantly worse than any other Brute powerset I've used.

And running around Peregrine Island with him after I got Irradiated Ground and Beta Decay tricked out with procs has been an interesting experience. When I get a Trick, I'll go after prioritize Spirits first (just to down them before they run; the auras generally keep the others right there), then Werewolves, then bosses (Vampire Lords/Crones), then other lieutenants (sorceresses/vampires); the minions get ignored until everything else is down, and they usually go down somewhere in all of that (and in one case two Sappers and an Operations Engineer that had decided to invite themselves to the party, but which I didn't notice until everything was down).
