Street Justice / Willpower Brute Build Help

Hello everyone, 

 

as this is the first time i really try to pay attention to Sets, i would like to ask for some advice how to create a solid build for my brute. 

 

I am a style over substance player, so farming or "squeeze the last bit out of it" is not an important topic, therefore i would like to keep the powers more or less as is, but am willing to adjust on enhancements/slots.

 

It should be reasonable affordable. 

 

Yes, i have the mids, but am not used to it yet, so i can import any advice but would need ages to build anything there.

 

Below is the current skilling, not respecced once so far, thats the reason for wrong overwhelming force assignment 🙂

 

What would you suggest?

On a super basic level, you don't need to slot for taunt unless you slotting the actual Taunt power. Hover gives a very low return on defense so those slots are essentially wasted. There's no real reason to slot it for end either. You would save much more end on slotting your attacks for it. Your attacks are criminally under slotted in general. You slot for side effects in attacks when there's little to no reason to do so. Shin breaker should be slotted 1 acc, 1 end, 3 damage, 1 recharge. 3 level 50 IOs is overkill due to the ED cap. Two level 50s will be close enough and you can enhancement boost the two to be the same as three IOs of lower level, see Hasten. I would not do enhancement boosters on an all common IO build though. Higher level IOs cost more to craft, near half a million as a base, so you are essentially wasting currency to slot as you did. I slot level 25s until I do IO sets and I have the crafting badge so I get a discount on top of being cheaper than using level 50s.

 

This is a cleaned up version of my Claws/wp brute using common IOs. I'm sure I could nitpick it, but at least it is a general idea.

Thank you for several good advices here already, i will consider all of them, but what would actually help me even more would be a build with my powersets and considering EnhancementSets as well. I am already on full IO (with many things done wrong) and want to change it to the better. But only once if possible, so directly on sets.

SJ/WP was one of my first 50's on Homecoming. I kept getting alpha'd by mobs so I got frustrated with WP and put that toon on the shelf for a long time. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I was leveling a WP tank and started to really enjoy it so I took what I learned tanking WP and applied it to my brute. Now to be fair... this is a very expensive build... But I have been playing it the last few nights and I only died fighting hamidion during Lady Grey SF. 

The goal of the build was to have OK all around defense and resistances with some monster regeneration
It is still a work in progress. Feel free to play around with the last two slots as you want. I noticed a slight issue with accuracy so I picked up Focus Accuracy gives a better bonus than Tactics, but obviously doesn't help your team. 
Also, Power transfer set may not be required. The bonus regen is nice but the heal proc is meh... 75 hp every so often but I don't think it is really doing a whole lot.

Without Vigor in your Alpha slot I get 79.62 HP/sec With the top tier Vigor Core  Paragon it goes up to 91.47 HP/sec

If you opt for Resilience Core Paragon in your Alpha slot you get this:

Which honestly might be a better option, but I will let others chime in who have more experience in the subject.

@Akki I’m a big fan of Vigor for a /WP brute. The benefit to Regen is astounding, the added endurance reduction to all powers allows for patron/epic pool flexibility and AOE madness, and the added accuracy frees up slotting for more proc inclusion. Since recharge is less valuable (no long clicks), it’s almost like the alpha was made for willpower. 

The Splintered Soul Project: (Nyght****) 21 and counting (18 max).

Unfortunately i get an error opening mids with your data file, either by link or via copy&paste of data. 

You probably need to upgrade MIDs to the “bleeding edge” version.

you could probably switch out resurgence for something else... perhaps Combat Readiness, but I personally like having the rez on hand.  Also, ignore the slot levels I pretty much have everything attuned/will be attuned.

What this team needs is more Defenders

Unfortunately i get an error opening mids with your data file, either by link or via copy&paste of data. 

I mean there is 14 PVP enhancements which cost 100 merits per recipe. That excludes crafting.
Also this build uses all 12 archetype enhancements which are purchasable in loot boxes on the auction house for 10,000,000 inf and you normally get 1 or 2 in a pack.
If you are unaware you can convert IOs of like rarity (e.g., uncommon, rare, PVP, archetype, etc.) or by type (e.g., defense buff, healing, ranged attack, etc) with Enhancement Converter Salvage. The conversion tokens cost 1 merit for 3 converters. And it is really random what you get and can be an annoying process...

9 super packs, use converters to change the ATO's to brute or blaster, sell the ATO's and a lot of the valuable 'junk' you get with the packs, like orange salvage, boosters, and catalysts. Use the merits to buy and sell converters, repeat until you can afford considerably better gear 🙂

I understand your idea and of course it could be one way, but why to start with the best there is ? I would like to go with what i have and am asking for advice of more professional players than i am, what could be the best set upgrades i could do within my options.

 

With more playing comes more inf comes more sets later on, but i would like to have a starting proposal.

Now i invested few hours to understand mids a bit better and was playing around with my Brute concept. 

 

What would you change in the result, is it good, is it meeh..is it garbage ?

@Radeon: It really depends upon how many other resources you have available... with less than 10 million and a base full of crappy yellow sets, or 100 merits, I can use converters to create a quite nice build that only uses 3 PVP enhancements, no very rares, but, of course, your ATO's take first priority.

ATO's are a VERY big deal for most AT's... some AT's can only really get use out of one set or even simply the proc from the second set(brutes), some AT's can split one of their sets to get way better bonuses from 3 of each in two different powers(stalkers), and some sets just suck so much on the second set that there's no point to taking them at all (controllers, doms, tankers) except to know you have both sets of ATO's.

If you are MISSING the ato's though, 90 million is a hugely crap place to start. Not impossible, but definitely a priority to get at least 1 set fully catalyzed, and a second set if it doesn't suck.


As far as your build is concerned, There are WAY better things to take then fly, Unless it is hugely essential to your concept... I would put it together a little more like this for a truly cheap build self-resources build:

A few notes: This is a 'work your way up' build, not a final level 50 builds. it has early stealth instead of early fly because that will allow you to stealth some exemplared chains for upwards of 100 merits an hour... You will NEED that in order to get the winter and purples that a willpower really needs to become an undestroyable thing.

Right now ALL your defenses except psi are within spitting distance of softcap. Bring some purples if you want. While I agree 60 HP/sec is insanely high, you seem to have forgotten you are a BRUTE, Not a tank... with you beating on and aoe'ing stuff, no fight should ever last so long with a group large enough to go over 50some hp/sec to overtake your 2000 hp. You are also not a 'pure defense' class, so you don't need 2500 hp in order to pad defense fails...your extremely high healing covers those fails.

Third- focused accuracy? ugh. worst power in the game. physical perfection? superior perfection? Ummm... again, not a tank. And you are willpower, with some of the best regen and end management already. unneeded. what you NEED is something to screw your enemies as fast as possible, and get out of the fight and healing as you run towards the next group. Pyre mastery does this... fire blast is both a nice mule for defense and a good puller/extra 200 damage every 2+seconds. weaken resolve will you give you about -30 resistance to a single hard target while melt armor screws up EVERYONE. And fireball? That will give you an extra 150 damage every 12 seconds with a HUGE radius for a brute.
 

 

Once you build up merits/influence, you can start working towards a better build, but this is pretty good for getting you into position for doing that. Just remember to buy jet packs from the P2W vendor and you are golden.

Flight is in fact conceptually required and stealth won't fit a granddaughter of statesman, so not Stealth for me 🙂

 

I think about the switch from energy mastery to fire mastery. 

 

Is focused accuracy really so bad that i should skip it?

I was thinking of adding an 'end game' build, but... that varies hugely by playstyle. This one will work just fine on a +4 ITF or most DA missions, and with stealthing lowbie chains for merits, should get you into a sweet financial position without having to rely too much on AH games or farming toons.

Some of the sets can be swapped directly out for purples, but you might want to consider winter sets when you can afford them... most of them are packed with resistance and defense buffs, more than just fire/cold, and could really elevate your build.

But, to be fair, I have NEVER been a fan of flight on a brute. It just doesn't mesh that well with melee-centric, and the slight defense buff plus lotg mule slot from Combat Jumping are a definite boon for melee players. . Although I HAVE been growing fond of playing with experimentation's speed of sound... superspeed, plus Jaunt, takes care of vertical problems and really feels like 'zipping into a new position' like a speedster.

Sweeping cross is great on a level 30 StJ, but at 50 it just sucks out combo points. Similarly, initial strike is easily replaced by shin breaker as a combo builder.... to be fair, though, it does suffer from a lack of attacks at REALLY low exemplar levels... I will usually slot an accuracy into boxing and keep sands of mu available if I go REALLY low (below 20) or you could do some rearranging of powers to give you more lower level options.
Resurgence just feels like a wasted power, sorry. But higher level you might want to find a way to slide in strength of will... but it's recharge sucks, which I why I skipped it.

Invisibility is simply an LOTG mule. If you want, you can drop a stealth in your sprint and that, plus concealment, makes a fine exemplar tool. replacing it with something more useful might work. You could even replace the force of will pool with leadership and get more oomf, but it might slow down smashing your way through end-of-mission fights or hard targets.

But brutes have lots of ways they can go 🙂 good luck.

Ok, some comments so far to this build.

 

I have not all enhancements yet, still waiting for 2 LoftG, Kismet and 2 damages. 

 

It feels like without focused accuracy i'm hitting jack..every third or fourth attack is a miss, blocked, deflected etc.

 

Damage looks good, mobs are falling quickly, endurance might be a bit low sometimes, but is enough overall. 

 

But durability is way worse than before, maybe the missing enhancements are the reason, but im falling much faster than before. 

 

Will check again after all enhancements are there and built in.

Ok, so I'm jumping in here as well looking for some thoughts on a build.  Usually (Read: up until today) I've basically just worked at most on regular IOs and sets maybe here and there with little concern about sets.  I'm not a min/maxer...or at least not very good at it. (Read: bored too easily/low attention span) So, I came up with this build.  I figure it's expensive, but this guy's got money to spare, plenty of merits sitting around and I figure why not see what I can do with him.  I'm open to any suggestions other than dropping Fly as my travel power.

Hover is useful for muling Defense set uniques like Kismet Accuracy and Shield Wall Res (all),  It should not need endurance reduction, especially with your build.

 

You'd be better off pulling slots out of Physical Perfection and Superior Conditioning and giving them to your lowbie attacks, which are good fury builders.  You're better off investing in recovery procs like Panacea, Miracle, and numina when you can afford them, and at level 50 that's only a matter of time.  These will go in Health. 

 

A taunt duration button can be justified for Rise to the Challenge, but your attacks would do better with a recharge.  The only thing it does there is to make the taunt effect of the attack last longer.  It does not raise its magnitude or allow it to hit more targets. 

 

Apart from those suggestions your build looks quite solid and basic for a mostly generic IO build.  Consider four Kinetic Combats in your single target attacks that have at least five slots in them.  This will give you a substantial defense boost.  The accuracy/damage recipe costs 20 merits so you're better off crafting four Acc/Dams from the sets and running in-set conversions until you get four different.  Avoid slotting the Chance for Knockdown in attacks that do knockdown, but do not disdain it elsewhere.  After four have been slotted, the fifth should be a generic accuracy IO or an Accuracy/Damage or Accuracy/Recharge from a cheap yellow set.

I made a similar build as the one you posted but I get wildly different results in two areas: Misc Buffs - Haste and Damage.

  1. Can someone explain where the different results for those two stats are coming from?
  2. Also, take a look and see where it can be improved?
    1. The goal is a high dps SJ/WP Brute. (I know there are better options for high dps, but that's what alts are for!)
    2. The concept beyond high dps is high recovery, regen, def/res; in that order.
    3. Money is no object. (I mean, I'm dirt poor in-game and not even level 50 yet, but I want to see what a maxxed out build would look as a far future, or even unobtainable goal.)
