Cones Cones Cones

I just incarnated a Dark/Mental/Soul.  Really enjoying it.  The thing has three "Attack modes" that I tend to fall into.  Well, there is the fourth of being overwhelmed and shooting wildly.  But let's discuss the ones I try to follow.  First, Jousting.  Jump in for Drain Psyche, PBAoE nukes (incarnate is PBAoE as well)  and PBAoE stun.  Second is long range ST punching.  Dark has a nice ST chain.  I gimp it slightly by enhancing my hold for Hold.  I like the set bonuses and I like having an ST hold.  Third is Cones.  There are 5!

I open with Umbral Torrent, 6 slotted with Overwhelming Force.  It is the longest range and its nice to drop them on their backs first thing.  Psychic Scream has Sup. Defiant Barrage and Tenebrous Tentacles has Artillery.  Night Fall has Sup. Frozen Blast and Soul Tentacles is another set of Artillery.

I was doing fire support on a farm to open up Hybrid and was not unhappy with the cone carnage.  Of course Nukes rule the day against big mobs, but jousting back or hovering up and unleashing an endless wave of cones is satisfying.  I am using Spectral Radial Interface so a 75% chance of minor neg DoT on each mob.  Just keep hosing them down.

Against hard targets (bosses, EBs) I had to switch back to ST at the end of the big mobs.  Am I right in thinking that due to the tohit debuffs and DoT it is actually a decent strategy to just keep cone pressure up on big mobs or should I really be ST plinking right from the start?

Having nothing to do with the farming question, try procs in Tenebrous Tentacles. I have 4, plus 1 acc IO and 1 range IO, and I find it far superior to enhancing the power's damage.

Uunderdog - Rad/Rad Scrapper | Uundertaker - Rad/Dark Corruptor | Uun - MA/Inv Scrapper | Uunison - Grav/Storm Controller | Uuncola - Ice/Temp Blaster | Uundergrowth - Plant/Martial Dominator | Uunstable - SR/Staff Tank

Uunreal - Fire/Time Corruptor | Uunrest - Dark/TA Blaster | Uunseen - Ill/Poison Controller | Uuncool - Cold/Beam Defender | Uunderground - Earth/Earth Dominator | Uunknown - Mind/Psi Dominator | Uunplugged - Stone/Elec Brute

Uunfair - Archery/TA Corruptor | Uunsung - DP/Ninja Blaster | Uunflammable - Fire/Nature Controller | Uunflappable - WM/WP Brute | Uundead - Dark/Dark Tank | Uunfit - Water/Martial Blaster  | Uunwrapped - Dark/Dark Dominator

Uunchill - Ice/Kinetics Corruptor | Uunpleasant - En/En Stalker | Uunbrella - Rad/Rad Sentinel | Uunsafari - Beasts/Traps MM | Uungnome - Nature/Seismic Defender | Uunsavory - Poson/Sonic Defender | Uunicycle - BS/Shield Scrapper

Uuntouchable - Ill/Time Controller | Uunferno - Fire/Fire Tank | Uunthinkable - Psi/SR Scrapper | Uuncivil - Thugs/Elec MM | Uunnatural - Ice/Savage Dominator | Uunshockable - Elec/Bio Sentinel | Uunfathomable - Elec/Dark Controller

I don't farm with my Dark/Time/Force, but I'm typically facing x8 spawns (usually with PUG, but also when I solo) and I use Umbral Torrent as my default attack. I'll open with it to bring the distant groups closer to me, and to get Moonbeam (the snipe) into Fast Snipe mode.

Most of my builds end up with 2 proc-heavy attacks; ranged attack cones are usually the first one I look at to franken-slot, with increased range the "base" of the cone is reasonably wide. Since Umbral Torrent already has a decent base range, I made sure to include some Accuracy slotting in it. Accuracy bonuses from set bonus slotting (and teammates) only goes so far, and I enjoy running with PUGs in low level content with the difficulty cranked up. Other characters I have with Psychic Scream usually have that as one of the %proc attacks. On my Dark Blaster:

Level 2: Umbral Torrent

  • (A) HamiO:Centriole Exposure
  • (37) HamiO:Nucleolus Exposure
  • (46) Cloud Senses - Chance for Negative Energy Damage: Level 30
  • (48) Positron's Blast - Chance of Damage(Energy): Level 50
  • (48) Javelin Volley - Chance of Damage(Lethal): Level 50
  • (46) Overwhelming Force - Damage/Chance for Knockdown/Knockback to Knockdown: Level 50

When franken-slotting with %procs, I try to keep an eye on the (set) level requirements of the enhancements so that I don't end up with an effectively 'unslotted' power when exemplaring. There are some powers where I ignore this advice (Gaussian's is too good to not include in an early choice "Build Up" power) and with some slotting options you may not have a choice. (See Positron's Blast %Energy in the above example).

In your case, without diving into the details of your build (such as global accuracy and recharge) or the exact nature of the types of content you will run with it, the only general piece of advice I will offer is that if you intend to do 'farming', it is probably in your interest to try to match the range of your cone attacks where possible. Blasters don't really need to rely on %damage procs, so even if you are leveraging a 5-piece set bonus you may want to consider using the 6th slot to boost range on some of the shorter cones instead of dropping an extra %damage. YMMV of course, I recommend using unslotters to test different options in the content you typically play against.

Hey Snarky

Did you ever settle on a build for this?  I have been struggling with Dark/Mental and coming up with something that works.  I don't know how to build it and have failed a few times now with lots of inf wasted.  Please let me know if you have something you could share because I would love the idea of blasting with cones and then heading in with PBAOE

Also, I realized WoC is trash waaaaaaaaay too late 😞

The great thing about having either the 4 or 5 cones is if PB is too hot you can just sit at 40-60 and train a fire hose of AoE on the spawns.  One is always up. Problem lining up a cone?   Not when you have an endless chain of them.  You will dial it right in. It is a little labor intensive but it seems similar to Ices big DoT AoEs.  Stuff will melt.  Then for hard targets you have ST. When it recharges jump in to Nuke (with Dark a massive to hit debuff). Grab some other PB madness then jump out to either cone or St

Thanks for the builds!!  Yeah, I don't really feel like leveling another dark blast right now (maybe later).  I was really hoping my Dark/Mental would work but it seems underwhelming.  Dont know why.  May just go for that Elec/elec/elec I have always wanted lol

I prefer Ice Ice, for me it is so much easier.  But, it is not spectacular.  It is a "support blaster"  I do Dark/Dark for my vamp theme.  Dark/Dark and Dark/Mental are almost exactly the same.  I feel (my perception) they do more damage and are more effective than ice/ice.  THose to hit debuffs really let you unleash from PB range.  My Dark/Dark is nearly a BlasTank.  But it is a lot of work and feeding the end bar is a constant battle.  But it is the most damaging thing I run.  It is on my books to try a Fire/Electric.  supposedly one of the most effective Blappers.  Not in my theme book but you may look at that.  Good luck.

Want to share what you’re running and maybe we can help you tweak and edit it? What’s underwhelming you? Damage, survivability, something else?

Sure thing!!  I do not have all the enhancements that I was shooting for in this original build (not mine I dont think, been away for a while).  I remember making a post and found it this morning.  I really liked the idea, IIRC, of stealth in to PBAoE range, dropping nukes / PBAoE, and then retreating back to cone range to finish off the mobs.  I don't know if thats the correct playstyle for Dark/Mental so I would be open to any other playstyle advice.  I am finding WoC not worth it at all so the tone of the build could change.

My preferred attack chain would have been stealth > drain psyche > blackstar > psychic shockwave > and then umbral / tentacles / ST

Maybe it would be better to do Umbral > Tentacles > combat TP > drain psyche > blackstar > psychic shockwave > ST

There's a lot going on in this build that might be contributing to your dissatisfaction. These are largely my opinions, but I offer them for you to review and judge.

The build is very defensive with capped S/L/F/C defense. That appears to have been the focus and other areas may be suffering for it. I like defensive blasters, but you're core strength is in dropping things before they drop you and we need to excel at that. Umbral Torrent is a bread and butter power and has very strange slotting, abyssal gaze is a fantastic Proc power but only slotted for Holds here, Life Drain has no heal enhancement, there's some odd sprinkling of resistance IOs that we don't need, seemingly no knockback or hold protection, Telekinetic Thrust is skipped. Let's fix a few things.

  1. Turn Umbral Torrent into an attack and profit. This is going to be your opener.
  2. For me, Tentacles operates better as a proc attack. The immobilize is useful, but the DOT is too slow for me to care about it, so I slot three procs to get some damage upfront.
  3. Turn Abyssal Gaze into the proc bomb it was destined to be. This is your best single target DPA.
  4. Get Telekinetic Thrust and love it. Your second best single target DPA and gets things out of your face.
  5. Pick up Acrobatics for the knockback and hold protection. You'll be in some tricky situations when you go point blank and don't want to get stuck there.
  6. Put some healing in Life Drain. It might mean you outlive the other guy.
  7. You still get capped (okay, it's 44.9) S/L defense, which means you have capped defense to 90% of melee attacks in the game since they nearly all have a S/L component to them.
  8. Ranged defense is a little lower than I would like, at a respectable 34%, but your -tohit will help.
  9. Probably most importantly, you don't need Agility Alpha and can switch to Musculature which boots your damage, tohit debuffs, immob duration, and endmod. We profit from all of that.

I would play this like this: Open with Umbral Torrent to put things on their backs -> jump in for Drain Psyche while things are on the ground -> PBAoE nukes. At this point, you've got layered defense from the capped S/L Defense and all the +regen from DP. You can scrap it out with the remaining hard targets, or jump back to blast your cones on the rest of the group. I think you'll see a lot more damage of this build which will improve your survivability, without sacrificing the things that actually keep you alive.

@KelvinKoleThanks so much for all the information here!!  I appreciate you putting in the time for sure!!

That said, is this the best way to play Dark/Mental?  I am not sure and some of the powers I didn't think were necessary and would consider dropping if it meant teleport and/or stealth would be more important.  I dont know that I could get softcapped that way though.

Yes I agree this was a push for something very defensive in just running in and trying to survive while laying out the damage rather than the battle plan with the knockdown > drain psyche > nukes > cones.

My other blaster I love is a water/atomic and it does amazing dps while being survivable and I would have to think you are right, if you can drop enough quick enough, the remaining alive mobs dont pounce so hard so the defense and resist I have would most likely keep me up

Also, is this going to be the most expensive build if I were to play this way or something in the middle?  I guess I am just asking if it can be improved upon with more inf.

Of course, the best way to play is the way you have the most fun. You will have some stealth with super speed and the celerity IO, but I’m not a stealth guru and can’t say if it’s enough to let you position yourself in the mobs without them noticing. The trouble with picking up the Stealth or Teleportation pool will be deciding which pool to drop. Leaping offers a lot, fighting and leadership are important for defense, so that leaves speed. Personally, I’d rather have hasten and ss than stealth or teleport…this is up to your preference. You won’t always be in control of the fight though, and stealth does little for you once the mobs know you’re there.

I always try to build with a realistic budget because I have too many alts and I don’t farm. I do play some auction house games to make money. You could spend more money here with some Hami O’s in Umbral and Tentacles, or another purple set in Moonbeam. I’m not sure the ROI would be worth it though.

Thanks again!!  I will give this a try, I have enough IO I could remove and sell to get enough to at least get a good idea of this build.  Maybe ill give it another go and see if I like the playstyle and if not, ill work on my other alts.

It is a little labor intensive but it seems similar to Ices big DoT AoEs.  Stuff will melt.  Then for hard targets you have ST. When it recharges jump in to Nuke (with Dark a massive to hit debuff). Grab some other PB madness then jump out to either cone or St

You're spitting a whole bunch of truth here my friend.

If given enough space, I select a nearby target and Combat TP to the other side of the herd to perfectly place myself for the next volley. This is especially fun of there's a group over there for me to aggro with Umbral Torrent before I repeat the maneuver back to my original space.

Now I wanna know what is the max possible number of cones you can have on a single character XD

I think it is 5.  But i have not explored every corner of the game. If you find 6+ do let us know

oh you can also throw the ice cone judgement on there.  But it is hot garbage in my opinion

This is probably gonna be a complete meme that no one will ever use... but I did find a way to increase the Cone cap to 7 cones... (no, I did not make a full build, I'm not that crazy XD)

Assault rifle has to be mentioned here. It is the OG of conical justice.

vorpal judgment is also a cone, and a darn good one.

Oh shit, probably should've done AR over Sonic since all of AR's cones actually do damage XD
