Energy Melee / Dark theory crafting alt

Hobbes

Recommended Posts

Hi!  Fiddling with Mids on some theory crafting Alts and wondering if anyone wants to share their play experience / thoughts on the build below or similar concepts.

EM/Dark running Oppressive Gloom and stacking the Disorients from the EM.  Most of the attacks also have a proc of some kind, Knockdowns in Whirling Hands, Power Crash, Bone Smasher and Energy Transfer, an Immobilize in Oppressive Gloom, hold in Energy Punch... 'cause why not.

Should keep everything staggering or flopping so Dark Regen shouldn't get worked to hard.  Could do this concept as a tank, but EM is slow enough to level on Brute.

i was thinking along the same lines but stalker instead so i can have crits AND stuns.

Did this idea work out?

if not, why not?

if so, gimme the lowdown

Its easy to criticize a suggestion but can you suggest an alternative?

@hobbes

Um I don't know the protocol here for double posting....

maybe I should edit my original post?

Can a GM do merger thingy?

anyway

@Hobbes

So I went for it.

I hadn't actually tried EM since the changes, so it was an extremely pleasant surprise.

bouncing around 1 shotting enemies is pretty darn fun.

1. Doesn't keep the enemies perma-stunned, the disorient tick is slow but noticeable.

2. disorients on energy melee are effective but between the procs & crits they are almost unnecessary (i went stalker)

3. Dark armor is very sturdy in almost all areas except energy resistance which means being a little squishier end game.

4. Although I'm slotted for mag 4 kb resistance I still find myself being bounced about on occasion. ymmv

5. Endurance costs are notorious for DA i managed by reducing the amount of toggles being run in combat.

Overall, I would consider this experiment a success.

The character is very fun to play.

It has a variety of tricks to keep things interesting and increase survivability.

Some sets are very powerful but boring, This is not one of those.

Thank you!

I don't know how you're slotting oppressive gloom, but it's a reliable minion stun and should be permanent with minimal slotting.

My experience with dark armor is tanking, I've got a Dark/Stone tank to perma-stun up to bosses and a Dark/Katana that keeps minions stunned easily.  One or two Acc/Mez HOs (which are relatively cheap) and call it a day.

What this team needs is more Defenders

I have this character as a Tanker. Increased Tanker radius on AoE applies to OG and CoF. Tagging enemies 12 feet away rather than 8 feet is huge. It amounts to 225% of the base area.

Also, Tankers get access to Conserve Power. Nice for end management without picking up Ageless. I find the difference in kill speed between a Brute and a Tanker negligible. Tanker survivability lets you take on crowds very early on, and boosted AOEs dispatch said crowds.

Saiya's experience with OG is not surprising to me. Unslotted OG will permastun enemies, but only if they stay in range. On a Stalker, you only have 8 feet radius and no taunt effect whatsoever. Enemies happily wander out of the aura.

My thoughts...

Use ALL toggles.  Yes, all of them.

Dark uses AoE stun and AoE fear to mezze the nobodies.  This gets rid of a ton if annoying incoming attacks.  If you do not take both those toggles do yourself a favor and quit reading. Dark uses to hit debuffs to also reduce incoming attacks.  Dark has non suppressed stealth.  When they cant see you eating their friend twenty feet away you can call that defense.  So Defense strategy set

Do build some +to hit and +accuracy into the thing.

Now, your big bads ignore most of that.  Soooo… some of the best resists in the game. Do not neglect energy resistance.  It can be built into a nice neighborhood.  I have Tanked Rom on a Master Run because i have energy resistance

BEST heal in the game.  Available every few seconds.  Top of my head i think mine sits at 8 sec recharge.  From .0001 health to 100%.

Energy Melee provides very good ST damage.  Bolstered by Dark armor damage aura there is decent AoE as well.  The stacking stuns might put a boss out for a few secs.  like a Vicky robot in incarnate trials

since a Dark Brute is rarely killed you will win any and all DPS races.

the most spectacular tacoing of my Dark Brute i recall was a shadow shard TF.  A teammate got stuck in a crossroads in a cave map with tons of big spawns all around.  My overconfident butt went in. Those F-ing eyeballs ignore steath. So part of my “defense” was gone.  Then…..oof.  Rikti, some Nemi and a very few Longbow Wardens do the same.  You need to learn the groups and know the odds.  Only bet on winning hands.

Been thinking of Snarky's replies to questions on Dark Melee And Armor questions while coming across certain situations lately.

1. The most noticeable aspect of not being seen I think comes into play with Nemesis. Those dudes see from way far away. Certainly further away from what a Brute can really counter.

2. As someone who likes to push the diff setting to has high as I can tolerate while soloing, learning what mobs do and certain specific enemies can go a long way in figuring out how to take on mobs.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute.  10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller.

It's the snipers.   Base perception 149 ft or pretty much only Superior Invisibility and Hide will keep you from being seen in most circumstances.  Once they attack and hit the "HitByFoe" kicks in (CoD2.0) and bye bye Stealth for 10 seconds (resetting each time you're hit).

Thanx for this thread.  I haven't played this game in 4ever and was thinking of Energy/Dark so this gives me some guidelines.  (Back in the day I think my main was either dark/regen or dark/dark I don't remember)
