Make my Force-Field / Fire Defender AWESOME!

I know that FF is looked down upon because so many have soft-capped defenses these days, but I wonder if there isn't a way to make it relevant.

I've never been good at builds and would appreciate any/all advice on sets as well as incarnate choices.

Thank you!

Force field can still be useful even for defensive softcapped allies in that the large majority of them have little to no defense debuff resistance, so overlayering extra defense adds a further buffer in the event of facing enemies that are able to debuff defenses. It also provides teams with extra mez protection which is extremely useful for non melee toons, has a cage for the situation that you pull one too many AV's, and has some interesting knock back or knock downs if you convert them to extra damage mitigation for yourself and team.

That said it's strengths are more subtle than in your face buffs like speed boost, fulcrum shift or debuffs like sleet and heat loss.

Yes FF could probably use a review and update, but it's not useless by any means.

If you find playing it fun then cool beans.

Pairing it with fire blast, I'd use force bubble to corral my targets into a corner and then rain on their parade as I pelt them with fireballs. You have a bit of a hindrance with the synergy of inferno being a PBAoE and force fields design to push mobs away from you though, so be aware of that.

FF is a set that in my opinion, the lower in level you go, the more benefit it provides. Giving close to soft capped defense to your entire team especially in lower levels is exceptionally useful. The set has its flaws and a few dud powers, but I think you're best off maxing out the ally buffs and TAoE, neglecting forcebolt unless you wanna use it as a proc monkey power with kb->kd, and then put in a force feedback proc in it. And focus the majority of the time using Fire Blast and beating enemies to dust. Hope this helps!

As much as I dislike FF in the current meta, this is a huge feather in its cap. There's maybe three sets out of the box with adequate -Def debuff resistance in the game, Shield, SR, Nin(maybe). Stone and EA benefit from adding in Incarnates, IMO.

As others here have said, Force Field is useful, but a bit lacking in diversity. If its major trick isn't needed, it doesn't bring much else to the table.

That being said, I like it for a few purposes:

  • Sort of a Sentinel approach to defendering. Fire blast is great for this, so you're off to a good start. Just toss your buffs when needed, and otherwise enjoy the high personal defenses and mez protection while you blast away.
  • Making random PUGs or introductory iTrial experiences a lot smoother. Power boost or build up+ shields = easy safety for all with little attention needed. Your buffs will be more welcome when people aren't sure what to do and make a lot of mistakes, or have suboptimal builds for the content.
  • Doing silly stuff with Force Bubble. This is not typically optimal play, but can be fun to mess with when solo or on a team who's game for silliness. Smash them baddies in a corner old-school hurricane style and blast away. This is a lot easier with an aoe immob though, so point to /Dark blast or a controller. : )

I rather enjoy my own FF/Energy/Power Defender. He's oriented towards offense as much as possible. Much of the slotting (minus the KB set IOs) would be transferrable directly to /Fire if you want some ideas. Even in /Fire, Repulsion Bomb would be a worthy addition to your aoes.

I break this guy out when I want to zone out and and blast in safety.

Here is a potential procc'ed out take on the combo. I aimed to make this as damage friendly as possible without skimping too badly on the ally shields or other effects.

Endurance slotting in Stamina/Health is a bit underslotted, so this would be relying on Destiny Ageless. You could decide to move slots out of procs over to those spots if you wanted to take a different route, like Rebirth for the healing.

Power Boost is a given for any of my Force Field builds. While you don't have to do it, IMO double-strength shields are making the most of Force Field's otherwise mediocre abilities.

I took Weaken Resolve to help cover for Force Field's lack of resistance debuff. Due to the nature of the -Resist proc not stacking from multiple teammates, on teams it won't be super critical. If you solo, though, this power should be giving a reliable -27% Resist debuff plus the damage effects listed, which should help a lot against hard targets, since -Resist multiplies proc and pet damage.

RE: Force Bubble, Repulsion Field and Force Bolt, this may be sacrilege to some Force Field players, but these powers don't even pass the "would I take this if it was an APP power?" test for me. Some of these powers are APP powers and people don't take them. I personally think Repulsion Field is the best of the lot, and Force Bubble is kinda fun. But this a power gaming buiild, and none of these three surpass what you can grab from pool powers in my opinion.

RE: Smoke, this is normally not a very good power. But Power Boosted Smoke is actually a pretty decent source of -ToHit, and you could sneak that into the build if you wanted.

Note I didn't bother to completely cap to any vector. You could, if you wanted to, by moving some slots around. My take on it is that 1) you're way overcapped for the 15 seconds after Power Boost, 2) you're capped any time you eat a Purple, 3) you're probably capped if there's any teammate nearby running a defense toggle or using a -ToHit power.

Here is my FF/Rad defender.  I play him like an AoE heavy SR sentinel, charging headfirst into mobs.  He is very sturdy, given that his defense is soft-capped against all damage types, even at mid-levels.

I mostly play him when I run WSTs with my SG mates.  I find him ideal for mid-level TFs.  Players are usually not slotted with IO sets at this level.  Missions go a lot more smoothly when everyone's defense is nearly soft-capped.  Add a well slotted tactics to improve to-hit and you can safely run missions a level higher than with other characters.

FF strongly encourages you to concentrate on your secondary.  There are only 4 must-have powers and FF doesn't need many slots.  For a defender or corruptor, that usually means damage.   So fire is a good fit.  I do recommend a proc heavy build though, since damage from defender secondaries is low.

I've included my build below.  Here are some notes.

  • Force bolt and Force Bubble are there for fun.  I only four-slotted force bolt because I enjoy watching mobs fly.  It only needs one slot.
  • I didn't take hasten.  I don't need it.
  • I took conserve power instead of power boost.  This is because my build isn't end-stable when I'm going full-tilt with my AoEs.  If you don't have end-issues, definitely go for power boost.
  • I took both hover and TP for my travel powers.   This is mostly historical.  I've been using the two together since the early days of live.
  • To provide a little more utility, most of my AoEs also do KD.  Repulsion Bomb has KD built in.  And I have slotted KD procs in two of my other AoEs.
