Marshal_General Posted June 17, 2019 Posted June 17, 2019 I am getting ready to make a defender and I was originally going with Beam Rifle, but the lack of AoE is concerning. I was looking at sonic and with Howl followed by Shockwave with the Kb to KD in it would be great for handling groups. Also the -res with each attack would help me and any teammates. Either way I am having trouble deciding how to shoehorn in all the powers for either build. Right now I am off to find a video of the sonic attack to see if it annoys me.
Force Redux Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Sonic on a defender has great stacking -Res. Results in things dying faster. Siren Song will let you solo annoying spawns. The sounds are kind of retro spacey sounds. I don't mind them, but I could see how it might bother some. I've never been able to get into Beam, so I can't compare it fairly... @Force Redux on Everlasting ----- (read my guide) ----- Gather the Shadows: A Dark Miasma Primer for Masterminds
Marshal_General Posted June 18, 2019 Author Posted June 18, 2019 Thanks. I am leaning towards sonic since I never actually played it since it was in the original beta. Which would be better with /sonic, time or kinetics?

Which would be better with /sonic, time or kinetics? Sonic Time would be a beast. You'd offer something of everything. I've never been a fan of playing Kin, though I appreciate the buffs. Try both till 20, see which you like. Time is personally safer for you as a defender. @Force Redux on Everlasting ----- (read my guide) ----- Gather the Shadows: A Dark Miasma Primer for Masterminds
Scientist Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Sonic will certainly be more in demand than beam rifle in a high level team, since it helps melt AVs. I kind of liked the effects of beam rifle, so I had one on live, but never got to 50 on them, it was for a theme team. Kinetics takes a certain kind of high risk/high reward, live on the edge type player. I have a friend who loves it, but his motto for blasters is "if you don't have debt, you aren't playing hard enough", so take that with a grain of salt. It will certainly be in demand at high levels, but so is Time.
Marshal_General Posted June 19, 2019 Author Posted June 19, 2019 I went with time/sonic. I am having a bit of trouble fitting everything in. As far as I can tell there is no skipable powers for either like there is with kinetics. These are the powers I want (I think), but not sure about the order Like I think I should get assault a bit earlier to help with damage, but I also need this, and oh yeah that and so forth and still didn't find room for Amplify. | Copy & Paste this data into Mids' Hero Designer to view the build | |-------------------------------------------------------------------| |MxDz;898;440;880;HEX;| |78DA65D2CB4EC2401406E0562004101191A05183124988C406A27BA3A26EAC21E29| |E34658089B5436889BAF4297C0B9F43F7DE6F51F75ED66EF070E6681A3B81B47CFD| |FFF6B4543FAA0C9F6D9DAC28EAC8BA65384EBDC29ACC6EB06E748F996D5B58A275A| |CC04A5484E98AEEAC0E6AD83D270C96FDCDD6D77ACDA6B6C70F585D376CDEE95986| |CB853DFD777CD7B05BACA1D584CDCDFAAAEB1AE6BE12AB0A61699B166FB5DD04EE6| |F3303C24E9B77A2F8BBD661AC11C75D9D35B8C96D36B6D1E1A65615877052DD705C| |D63D9E8049F2F0BD1A5768F5E1034BB91FFA2F0F202A898A7209AD0049002506B71| |622093D42A11C54069B30591853D7D08B9044506E416224B16FD97B824D9C2C8EA9| |67900449424E09BD244932AD62EF062C4596C2D41D489A248D32060365542999390| |57B0F909AA4D424A65EE07A5324532839E8CD90CC1465EF117A59B22CA65EA19723| |C9A1BC0DC9E73C903C4A12CE54A0090A34F9393CCC22A58A98BA00D128A5A1A4A05| |72229A14C07FFFF530B3E29F9A4EC93259F2CFB64DB2B8BF2FE77062627EA57839E| |77645E1EFF8C82D1C4CA7B00EDC36B0599FBF2DAA97C07DEBD46D78B8CFEBD75FD1| |F2E54ED40| |-------------------------------------------------------------------| Any help would be appreciated.
PhroX Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 I'm playing a Time/Sonic, up to the low 40s (forget exactly), and I'm pretty impressed overall - Time offers fantastic buffs and debuffs plus a solid amount of healing, while Sonic is both a good single target set with some control for when you're soloing, and a huge force multiplier against tough targets while on a team. There is a small anti-synergy in that with Time you really want to be in the middle of the enemies so Time's Juncture can be at its best, while Sonic's AoE powers (barring the nuke) are cones, but it's not that bad, and even a Howl fired from inside a group will usually hit a good number of targets. In terms of powers, I took all of Time, skipped Shockwave, Amplify and Screech from Sonic, then Hover/Fly, Hasten, Maneuvers, and Power Build Up/Temp. Invulnerability, with Boxing/Tough/Weave planned for the last few slots.
Chance Jackson Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 Time/sonic/Soul is the only Defender I ever took to 50 when the game was live & I have recreated it in Homecoming where at 43 it sits as my highest lvl alt by 9 lvls IIRC.

This to the Nth degree, I did that on live and again in Homecoming
