Thoughts? I am missing something. More Ranged and AoE defense? More Smashing/Lethal/Energy/Negative/Fire/Cold Resists? Can I even GET more Toxic and Psionic resists? More recharge?

I love ALL Archetypes, but prefer to play them Blue-Side.

Quick thoughts:

- Deflection and True Grit can and should be slotted for resistances and maxHP too

- both Deflection and Battle Agility are underslotted for defense. Those are your bigger shields, make sure you're hitting at least +50% defense enhancement there

- Combat Jumping doesn't need extra slots beyond the base LotG, the defense is tiny

- Phalanx Fighting is also arguably better off with just the base slot. You only get extra defense around teammates, and the buff isn't that big

- the regeneration Physical Perfection provides is minimal. You can cannibalize slots here to feed Deflection and True Grit

- I'm not seeing Health/Stamina in the build excerpt, so I'm going to assume you put the procs for Panacea and Power Transfer in there. If not, they're great procs!

- I'd also suggest Power Transfer and Perf Shifter procs in Superior Conditioning, over Efficacy Adaptor. You can do both, but if you do just one, procs are likely better

- Chop is strictly superior to Beheader. You have a lot of recharge so you're animation bound more than anything

- the Hecatomb set can go in Swoop rather than Gash, for better proc rate

- Cleave is your cornerstone power, I would say a better recipient for the Armaggeddon set than Pendulum. I'd swap the two

- AAO should get an end reduction IO rather than a recharge IO

I am a big fan of Brutes and part of the reason I have been fairly absent from these forums for most of the past year is burnout and frustration at the state of Brutes (not getting into it beyond that), so understand what I say next is offered honestly....

You should play this as a Scrapper or Stalker. The damage will be eye watering.

I have both a WM/Shield and a WM/Ninjitsu Scrappers. If/when I return I expect it will be to finish up on the Battle Axe/Ninjitsu Scrapper. The absurd chance to crit coming out of stealth on him is out of this world.

Oh, and follow nihilli's advice.

FWIW, my WM/Ninjitsu Scrapper. Now imagine making those juicy Axe attacks from stealth combined with the Scrapper ATO.

I always enjoy your insight Erratic1. I don't know what is going on regarding Brutes, but I just love being able to wade into anything and walk away (and also the fights not taking forever [cough cough tank cough]). I have some awesome Scrappers (I played a broadsword/regen on live back in the day), but the brute is so near and dear to my heart. Back in live beta in 2003/2004 my main was a stone/mace tank, and I SWORE I would never have something so end draining and slow once the game went live. So, when City of Villains went live a bit later, I IMMEDIATELY started making Brutes.
I am still missing something, but I was able to take nihilii's advice, I THINK?

It annoys me not to crack 80% S/L Resistance on a Brute, but limitations of a Def set. I could get above 80% S/L resistance but it would have meant bad things to defense values. It also lacks perma-Hasten. You have enough attack to cycle through, though I admit there is something to be said for Shield Charge ever 21s and Pendulum every 3s. S/L/F/C resistances are a bit better for not much change to defense values. Dropped One With the Shield (hate crash powers), and left you with 5 slots to play with. Did you intentionally not take a travel power? (Fine if you did, some characters it is out of concept for.)

Yeah, the concept is a magickal axe and shield passed down the generations. So, I use the flying carpet as my travel power. As for the totals here they are with and without One with the Shield:

I love ALL Archetypes, but prefer to play them Blue-Side.

Looks pretty solid to me.

- Cleave is your cornerstone power, I would say a better recipient for the Armaggeddon set than Pendulum. I'd swap the two

Doesn't cleave have both horrible DPA and a horrible radius? I've only played the set on tanker, but I assumed it was an easy skip.

It does roughly same base DPA as Chop, at range, can hit multiples, comes with 80% KD, can slot AoE procs (arma, fury).

If you have lightning fast reflexes and manage ideal mob setups at all times, or mostly care about ST DPS, there can be a point to stick to super high recharge Swoop -> Gash -> Chop (or throw in a snipe or gloom in there) for slightly more DPS. I have seen such builds advocated.

Personally I'm faaaar from perfect, so the many advantages of Cleave outside of pure DPA come into play. It's worth it as a ST attack which makes any extra target hit free damage. It lets me hit instantly rather than take half a second to step into melee range for the next autotabbed target. It fills up a pure Axe chain of Cleave -> Swoop -> Gash -> Chop that is loose on recharge requirements and will fit down to lvl 21 as exemplar. It also makes a perma AoE rotation out of Cleave -> Pendulum -> Axe Cyclone, if that's what I need instead. It gives me solid mitigation.

All in all I value this optionality immensely. A pure ST attack would have to be at ET levels of DPA to overshine that. YMMV, but I think anyone who hasn't done so should try the power then decide.

It has 86% of Chop's DPA at base, meanwhile Chop has 88% of Gash's DPA at base. So it's actually further from Chop than Chop is from Gash.

I take your point though. My thinking is along the line that you can reach enough recharge to not need it in either your ST or AoE attack chains, but I have admittedly not played the set that extensively, so maybe that's not true.

Perhaps you're looking at animation times without Arcanatime?

Using Tanker values, I see:

Cleave: 145.81 dmg, 2.508s animation = 58.13 DPA
Chop: 86.64 dmg, 1.452s animation = 59.66 DPA

~2% difference.

So, quick question for everyone. What Incarnate powers would be best for a Tanker/Brute/Scrapper with Battle Axe and Shield Defense?

Key (for me) is Rebirth Destiny, for the heal that SD/BA lacks.  Resilient Alpha to get your resistances near cap, Mighty Judgement, for more smashy damage, Diamagnetic (my go-to Interface for all melee toons), Lore...pick your flavor and Melee Hybrid for more +res and regen.

Cleave is also a good mule for set bonuses that come out of MAoE enhancements; you can shore up your AoE def with Dervish, Melee def with Avalanche or Obliteration, or a little melee/aoe with Multi-Strike.  It's also pretty good for clipping runners that sneak out of mobs, or filling out an attack chain if you're getting pounded with Cryo Rifles or other slows.

Cleave: it's what's for dinner.
