Seeking Willpower Advice

Timeshadow

Recommended Posts

Greetings, Scrap Lords!

I've recently returned from the world of Azeroth and I'm looking to build a new Scrapper. I've got a concept in mind for Claws/WP but I'd like to get some advice before I start putting in the time and influence.

I've played Claws before so I'm pretty familiar with how to build it but Willpower is a mystery to me. I understand it runs on a mix of Def, Res, and Regen but how does one account for big damage spikes when fighting tough enemies? Is it worth trying to softcap or should I focus on +Res to mitigate hits getting through my defense? Should I take the self-rez or is it one of those "a power that only works when you're dead is useless" situations?

I appreciate any guidance you can give me.

You wanna play Peacebringer?😒  Fine, but at least check out this guide first: Peacebringers STILL SUCK!!! (v. 1.1)

Read this: https://cod.uberguy.net/html/powerset.html?pset=scrapper_defense.willpower&at=scrapper

Otherwise Willpower utilizes a lot of Regen, so plan to build to HP cap when you have your HP boosting accolades. After that is say you can add S/L resistance, while trying to get more typed defense playing into willpower's strength.

If you're going to play at high levels, you can also look at using a rune of protection, melee (core or radial depending on your needs), strength of will, and demonic cycle. Otherwise you might give consideration to rebirth radial as well to max out your regen further.

I would advise not to waste a power slot on the self res, when you can have a self res prestige power like return to battle.

Willpower is largely set and forget. The T9 is the only click power and has a 5 min recharge. You want foes close to you to maximize the +regen from Rise to the Challenge. Slotting is pretty straight forward (see below). Most take Tough and Weave for additional protection. Be aware that Willpower has no protection against -end and very limited resistance to -regen. It's not worth trying to soft cap defense since Willpower has very limited resistance to defense debuffs.

High Pain Tolerance: Steadfast Protection and Gladiator's Armor +def uniques plus 2x heal IOs

Mind Over Body: 4-6 slot resist set

Fast Healing: 1-2 heal IOs (or set)

Indomitable Will: 3-4 slot defense set

Rise to the Challenge: 6 slot heal set

Quick Recovery: 1-2 end mod IOs (or set)

Heightened Senses: 4-6 slot defense set

Strength of Will: 1-2 resist IOs (or set)

Lets see.  Focus your mind on the task at hand.  Ignore pain; know that its transitional.  Every injury only strengthens you.  Fight until you are exhausted and you will find energy you never know you had.

Girls of Nukem High - Excelsior - Tempus Fabulous, Flattery, Jennifer Chilly, Betty Beatdown, Totally Cali, Two Gun Trixie

Babes of War - Excelsior - High Beam (Yay), Di Di Guns, Runeslinger, Munitions Mistress, Tideway, Hard Melody, Blue Aria

Many alts and lots of fun.  Thank you Name Release For letting me get my OG main back!

Willpower as an armor set starts to fall apart at (what I consider to be) the high end of the game.  There's just so many times you can cross your fingers and hope the RNG works in your favor, and Willpower doesn't really have any inherent "come back" powers.  The T9 is ok, but needs to be activated before you get in trouble (in my opinion) and the fact that recharge has no effect means it can only be up 40% of the time.

I would add Shadow Meld from Soul Mastery or Hibernate from Leviathan Mastery as additional "time out" powers a willpower scrapper should consider at high levels of +/x.

I appreciate the guidance (And the jokes😂). Did a little messing around in Mids' and came up with the below build. Turns out I'm a lot rustier than I realized. As a result, I'm not really happy with this first draft. A few observations:

  1. I'm over cap on S/L Resist and under where I'd like to be on Defense. I know from prior builds on other toons that 32% S/L Defense is the sweet spot when working with Resistance as my primary mitigation tool (Enough that a small purp will achieve softcap). This build currently sits at 27% Def and 79% Resist. Any ideas on how I can resolve that?

  2. I'm about 300 HP short of the Scrapper cap with accolades. I don't know how much this will actually matter in practice, but it's a goal I'd like to shoot for. Any advice on getting that last little bump?

  3. I don't have full stealth. This isn't a requirement for any build, obviously, but it's something I'd very much like to have. Especially on tougher toons, the ability to sneak objectives and bypass mobs to kill whatever boss needs to go down is great team utility, IMO. I understand RttC will aggro mobs as I pass by and I've already got macros in mind to toggle it off when stealthing.

  4. I have no idea what to do after level 46. The power picks and slotting you see from that point on are completely arbitrary. Any reassignment of those elements would be perfectly fine by me.

- You can leave Strike single slotted if you want. It really isn't needed. You can toss those slots elsewhere. I'm not sure if I have it even slotted in my Level 50 Claws builds outside of my Claws/wp Brute. I recently logged into it and was surprised how different it looked compared to how I would build it now. I've started but not finished redoing it.

- I would skip Eviscerate as you likely won't need it. Again, if you want it for the set bonuses, I can understand. I would rather take Hasten and use those slot for elsewhere.

- I would much rather have the CS proc in FU and slot out Spin with the SS set. Spin is your heavy hitter and it is PBAoE. You want that bigger crit going there. You can at least look into splitting the SS set to double up on the Def bonus.

- I didn't take SoW on my Claws/wp Brute, but I would rather stick the +3 Def IOs in those two slots as a mule and use those new slots in HPT for something else. Case in point, I don't see the Unbreakable Guard +HP IO.

- A Performance Shifter: Chance for +End is going to beat a common IO.

- I don't see either +Res IO. That's +8% Res plus scaling. Since you are over with S/L, you could then scale it back and see about boosting other Res.

- I'm not sold on the idea of picking Energy Torrent and Laser Beam Eyes. The goal should be to get your ST and AoE attack chains down to three powers for each. I'm willing to accept Spin as part of the ST attach chain if need be.

- You can swap in Maneuvers and Combat Jumping, use those as spots to shift over the LotG: + 7.5% Recharge and create further slotting for other powers. It would give you a 5th slot the LotG IO.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute.  10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller.

I agree there's no need for LBE or Energy Torrent when you have claws. Procing FF in claws, and perhaps some -res procs, claws has a very smooth attack chain.

If you're going for rebirth, there's no real need for physical perfection, which would allow you to go for shadow meld which can help especially when mobs start hitting you, you can usually get the recharge of the power to have about a 40% uptime or so. Tie that in with melee radial for more defense, or unleash potential and you're probably set.

Thanks for all your help, gang. I've retooled the build into something that I think is pretty solid. I'm 1% off the Resistance cap and I've got enough Defense that I'll be a bit over softcapped while Shadow Meld is up. On top of that, I'm just 100ish HP shy of the total health cap. I kept Hover in for theme and I managed to get full stealth, albeit by pushing Hasten back further than I'd like but that's a trivial issue at 50.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do improve but I'm fairly happy with this iteration.

Hey @Timeshadow mind if I piggyback your thread? I've got the exact same powersets and questions. Just seems redundant to start up another thread for the exact same thing.

Here's hoping the answer is, "no probs my man, carry on!"

I actually have 3 builds I've been kicking around. I think all are viable, but I've got questions.

Why is Eviscerate skippable but not Shockwave? A second longer animation for what looks like loads more damage seems like an OK trade.

A buddy of mine took one of the builds on the test server and had no probs with radios +4/8 on COT, Malta, Clowns, and Council (I think). So what is "high end of the game," star content?

I'm still leery of regeneration alone. I have a Brute /Bio that does great, but he has a couple of CYA buttons. WP is all regen... How much is enough or even too much?

All three builds are attack heavy, some are prob situational, but most are for the stats, and one or two are prob never gonna see action.

Probably have more questions after I get some answers....

Thanks!

P.S. What good is Hasten in this combination? It only shaves fractions of seconds off the attacks. I didn't take it.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do improve but I'm fairly happy with this iteration.

  • Swap Titanium Coating for Unbreakable Guard or Aegis. Otherwise, drop at least 1 piece from Mind Over Body and Tough. You're not getting much from the 5 piece bonus.
  • If you have the budget, slot the full Critical Strikes set, not just the proc. Otherwise swap Crushing Impact for Mako's Bite or Touch of Death.
  • In Moonbeam, swap Extreme Measures for 5x Sting of the Manticore.

RE: Eviscerate versus Shockwave.

Eviscerate is 49.64 DPA. Shockwave is 55.29. Add in the KB/KD, and it offers a bunch of additional mitigation.

Re: Hasten.

As long as you can cycle FU + Slash + Focus and FU + Spin + Shockwave then you are good to go. You can min/max your DPS with taking a snipe, but I never have.

I don't think you need the 5-piece bonus from LotG. Accuracy is not an issue with Claws, IMO.

Looks like the math has me slipping in another attack before the second Follow Up. Still should be able to double stack FU though. That's the main goal, I'm guessing.

Radios are NOT tough end game content. If you're looking for more challenging stuff to solo, there's a bunch of Incarnate story arc content (Dark Astoria, Belladonna Vetrano, Number Six, Sister Valeria), the RWZ story arcs, Provost Marchand's/Mister G's story arcs, and most of the lvl 45-50 red side story arcs.

Yeah I won't bother soloing any of that. Well I do the dailies in DA but that's about it, but only on my Brutes. I didn't think anyone was talking about soloing end of game hard stuff. I must've misunderstood...

Yomo, I've been looking at Shadow Meld, but would having some medium purples on hand be as good if not a little better?

No, but tough doesn't have a 15 second window either and then off for 10 seconds with a 3 second cast.

I was comparing it to an insp because they function more similarly, but the insp is insta-cast and lasts a full minute with the exact same benefit.

But yeah keeping certain insp's in your trays can be iffy, I know I'm not the best manager of the tray.

You make a good point on inspirations, but then you are dependent on inspirations.  If I am going to be using a power frequently, I'd much rather have it in power form than pill form since you know you aren't going to run out (although watch the timing!).  I rarely take a rez power, for example, since although I die I don't die enough to need it every spawn.  On the other hand, if I'm pushing it, I will use Shadow Meld a handful of times during any given mission, and I don't have to refill my tray after the mission.  Yes, the cast time on Shadow Meld is a pita, but to me it is less of a pita than managing my insp tray to be full of purples all the time!

Also, and this is just me, inspirations always feel like cheating to me, so I try to avoid them and then when I use them I pretend no one saw me pull that red seven out of the deck in solitaire.
