I started to create a character with what I think is a brilliant name.  During the creation process I verified that the name was available on that server, and received the check mark indicating it was.  Before finishing the character, however, I realized I already had a character on a different server with the same archetype and power sets.  So, instead of completing the character creation, I backed out and transferred the other character to the server in question.  When I tried to rename, I was told that the name was already in use.

"That's cool.  When someone indicates they want to use a given character name, it becomes reserved for a while.  Good idea!"  But it has been two days, and I still cannot rename the transferred character.  The same message shows, that the name is already in use.  So either someone else used the name immediately after I tried, or character names become reserved for multiple days.  If the latter, for how long is a character name reserved?

If the name was released due to the name release you have to actually log into the game with the new character to activate the name transfer. If you try to rename a character before that step is completed the name release won't happen.

Make new character

log in

log out

delete new character

rename old character to that name

collective unconscious

collective unconscious, term introduced by psychiatrist Carl Jung to represent a form of the unconscious (that part of the mind containing memories and impulses of which the individual is not aware) common to mankind as a whole and originating in the inherited structure of the brain. It is distinct from the personal unconscious, which arises from the experience of the individual. According to Jung, the collective unconscious contains archetypes, or universal primordial images and ideas.

If you think it was "a brilliant name", other people probably think it is as well.

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

It worked!  Thank you.  It did fail on an immediate rename try after deleting the temp character, but I tried again later, and the name is mine!

That's what I was afraid of, and gave no details until actually acquiring the name.  It really surprised me that no one else on Indomitable ever thought to create Indomitable Snowman.

A retired cop down the block from me had the entire cast of 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' in his yard.  I told him that, when I was walking by, I noticed one and said, "OMG, that's Yukon Cornelius!"  Then I noticed the rest of them.  🙂

I've noticed this delay in letting the name go after seeing it is available even before the name release became active. I've found the way to clear the name for use is to pick a new name and getting the green check before exiting the creator. If the name was in use though and you are claiming it with the name release, then what GM_Crumpet says is the way to go.
