aethereal Posted February 5 Posted February 5 While I'm not a dev or anything, it is my strong belief that there is not currently any way for a power to have an optional target. It would require new powers code (not just new powers effects). The closest that I think you could get right now would be to allow placate to work on a friendly target and just do nothing to the friendly target, while having a self-effect when cast on a friendly.
tidge Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Frankly: The suggestion feels more like a "*I* expect the power to work this way" suggestion and less like a "there is something deficient/broken/missing from the power". This is OK, most of us have been in that headspace at some point. It helps to get other player's perspectives on the power, both in terms of in-game use and with game mechanics, to understand why a self-certified brilliant idea might not shine as brightly to others. Something else that is really cool about Placate (as it currently stands) for certain ATs (I haven't verified it with all) is that it's effect nullifies whatever is causing an AI enemy critter to run away. I keep meaning to test the Presence pool version (Pacify) to see if it will have the same effect but I haven't gotten around to it. For my INF and for some ATs, stopping a runner is at least as important as trying to grab a little bit of aggro from a dedicated power like Provoke. 1
Mystoc Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 9 hours ago, Wavicle said: I just don't see the purpose of the suggestion at all. If you're in range of mobs, you can target them and hit Placate to Hide yourself immediately. If you're NOT in range of mobs then waiting 5 seconds isn't going to be an issue. the purpose is you can enter hide right after a battle ends to be ready to fight from hide when your team engages with the next pack of mobs much sooner, this would also let you starts placates cooldown right away as opposed to be tied to a target which is limiting. this is how I see it being used in normal gameplay Battle is finishing up there are no targets to placate Hide is having its 10 second cooldown You have placate ready but no target normally this means it can't be used. 5 seconds later your team starts their next fight with a new pack but you aren't hidden yet. You have two options with how placate works currently wait the 5 seconds to be hidden again while your team is fighting you are just watching them. use placate as opener to a fight placate on a target to be hidden right away this works but is only saving 5 second of hide wait time so is inefficient you are also giving up the chance to get back to back crits by forcing the hide with placate but now if placate can be used to enter hide targetless you can use it right after the current battle ends to bypass 10 seconds of hide while also starting it cooldown so it can be used mid fight for the next pack of mobs as well. the main real advantage for this change is cooldown management for placate you get to use it on your own terms and have it be impactful during and out of combat. 1

Run in and placate your assassin strike target, and assassin strike them. 1 If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore. (It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications) Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case. But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable. Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.
Wavicle Posted February 5 Posted February 5 The suggestion adds nothing at all. The hypothetical situation is: combat has just ended, and there is another fight less than 10 seconds away, so I want to be able to hit placate to start combat Hidden. But if combat is less than 10 seconds away, you can just target an enemy and hit Placate, thereby making you Hidden. THE POWER ALREADY WORKS THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO, IT JUST REQUIRES A TARGET. IN THE SITUATION WHERE THERE IS NO TARGET, COMBAT IS MORE THAN 10 SECONDS AWAY. The hypothetical situation does not exist. The change is not needed. 1 Wavicle's Guide To What Really Matters: What Needs To Be Done On Every Toon
