I agree, he's a Sentinel.

But - if you were making him a Defender, go Force Field/Energy Blast with the Fighting Pool and Energy Mastery or Electric Mastery.

You'll have repulsor rays, be able to softcap your defense to all positions and Smashing/Lethal Resistances, and have a nice big energised punch.

And as an out-of-concept bonus you can shield your allies.

I also agree with Thraxen that he's the archetypal Energy/Invul Sent.

But if you want to avoid the disappointment that is Energy Blast, are flexible with your interpretations of his powers, and use color tinting, I think a Fire/Inv Sent with the fire colored to your tastes works really well.

Flares looks like a flurry of micro rockets.

Blazing Blast looks like a powerful energy beam.

Fire Breath with the alt animation looks like a palm mounted flamer.

Rain of Fire looks like it shouldn't be taken so skip it. 🙃

And so on.

Sonic is another option, especially with alt animations. But the sound effects might wreck your immersion.

Note that Radiation Blast is a very good substitute for Energy Blast because it doesn't need to pay the knockback tax and can be recolored to look about the same.

For a Defender? Force Field/Sonic.

The power of Siren Song is not to be discounted for solo work

The dreaded knockback can also not be discounted for solo work either.  I have a character called Assaulting Nimbus a Storm/Sonic and between Gale, Shockwave and Siren's Call most of the foes spend their time getting up or falling asleep while my single target attacks pick them off.
