Erratic1
Having gotten my first post-shutdown character, a Rad/Psi Tanker to 50, I should have been busy grinding out incarnate goodies for her. But putting sanity aside, I decided to not only attempt an SR Tanker, but one using Titan Weapons. While I suspect I will be bitten in the rear later in upper levels, it's been much better than expected (apologies though to that one team from this past Saturday) up through level 32. Titan Weapon is endurance hungry, so I was forced to double slot all attacks but the first two for endurance cost reduction (and the second one has one endurance reduction slotted) since not all teams have someone who buffs recovery. Solo, defenses all sit at a hair more than 40%. Melee Defense will leap up well over 45% when Defensive Sweep is used. Typically party buffs result in Ranged and AoE Defenses rising past 45% as well. Capping is trivially within reach. But what then? Chasing resistance buffs via IOs seems a pursuit with minimal payback. If the idea is he will not get hit often, building Regeneration seems like the way to go. On top of that I was thinking of grabbing the scaling resist IO and have slotted the ATO absorb proc enhancement.
Zumberge
You absolute madlad. In all seriousness, though? Regen sounds like a plan, but also recharge and global endurance discount. Ideally you get enough recharge through IO slotting and bonuses so you can use Whirling Smash twice in the span of a single Build Momentum; can't get hit if nobody's standing. Also, please tell me you didn't take Weave. As a Scrapper main I eat a steady diet of crayons and glue to keep my wits sharp and my reflexes honed. marcussmythe
That actually sounds potentially -awesome- once the incarnates and purples set in. TW hits like a truck, and will love the recharge, and has a DEF power and KD mitigation. SR brings easy softcap and pretty easy incarnate softcap and all the DDR. Sure, youll carry greens, but my Bio carries purples to fend off debuffs, so thats a wash? Let us know how it works out. I think with work to master it and time to gear it out (and likely a respec or two!) it will be a lot better than its given credit. RE: Resist - remember that youll get some as you fall under 50% HP. 1:1 IIRC. Putting on some RES to stack with that might be worthwhile - and obvs tough... or maybe the Rune from Sorcery for emergencies? PS: Given your DDR and low resist and no healing, you might be in a great place to leverage Barrier Destiny and Melee Hybrid. Xaeon
ur dad have the triple big lesbian Okay got that out of my system. It's certainly a thematically weird combo and many people side-eye using SR on brutes and tanks, but from my napkin math it seems like it'd definitely be workable; if a bit painful to level solo until you get to the soft cap. Titan Weapons loves recharge bonuses like Snowflame loves cocaine, and SR does give out a good chunk. "Titan/Bio scrappers are the stealthiest toons in the game." "How's that possible? They don't have any inherent stealth and you'd never take concealment pool powers on them!" "You see; they're perfect at stealth because nobody will notice if there's nobody to notice." If the idea is he will not get hit often, building Regeneration seems like the way to go. On top of that I was thinking of grabbing the scaling resist IO and have slotted the ATO absorb proc enhancement. Regen is very difficult to build for SR. The best bonuses come mostly from Heal sets, and SR doesn't have any native slotting for that. Aside from Health and probably Physical Perfection, your two best options are either going Medicine for Aid Self (and probably Field Medic) or going Presence for Unrelenting. Medicine is undoubtedly the more responsible choice. Tanker TW is the most flexibile version of TW, though (since you'll be replacing both Crushing Blow and titan Sweep with Defensive Sweep for Bruising), so you've got the option of being a little crazy if you want. Unfortunately, even with the additional slotting you're still going to be getting a lot more health per second from Aid Self or even Unrelenting than you will from (pre-Incarnate) regen. And although Tanker SR resist scaling is inexplicitly low, you do still get some -- building for S/L resist is absolutely going to get you more bang for your buck than chasing regen through a lot of bad build decisions. Of course post-Incarnate, you can run around as a Melee Hybrid, Rebirth Destiny uber-monster and skip every power in your primary except Practiced Brawler and Quickness. A quick plummet test from max height suggests for Tankers the scaling start from 60%. 465.2/1372.5=33.89% .3389 + 0.26 = .5989 or 59.89% Toss in Reactive Defense: Scaling Damage Resistance and that gives 3-13% more. Tough seems like a no-brainer to want to add on top of that.
nihilii
My own SR/TW tanker has been a breeze to play. :D Definitely going to second the "build for resistance, not regen" suggestions. You'll reach 90% S/L under duress (the tanker ATO easily stacks twice, sometimes three times, for an additional +12% to +18% res). It's the kind of character where you plan for Rebirth and end up realising you're taking on everything before you've even unlocked it. With most +4/x8 factions, surviving consists of 1, jump in, 2, walk away from the keyboard. Now if only PB wasn't a click so we could have an attack on auto. :) And TW being TW, you end up with respectable damage output. On my weirdo build that skipped Follow Through (I wanted as little to do with Momentum as possible - it messes with my brain, literally), still managed to beat down Hro'Droth, Honoree and their x8 adds at the end of LGTF, solo, no Lore. The biggest challenge to this character hasn't been defense, resistance or regeneration... But endurance drain! I got utterly wrecked by STF Lord Recluse, and anything with significant drains generally implied a struggle of balancing attacks and detoggling myself, despite Conserve Power. TW is end heavy and has no tools to help SR's complete lack of ability in that regard, so that's one thing to think of.

Kruunch
While resist based primaries live on the edge a bit less, I've found defense based sets working out just fine with a little IO loving (Incarnate turns anything into god mode imo). I have an Energy Aura Brute that tanks everything in the game ... so a defense based set can work. As for resists, with a Defense based set you are still going to get hit (not a matter of IF but WHEN). Resists, even a minimal amount can mean the difference between being one-shot and living through the encounter. Consider the +5 res global, scaling resist global and MotT resist proc and you have potentially +30% resist all right there. Add in some S/L resists via IOs (easiest to get) and you have yourself a decent stop gap for when you do get hit in most circumstances. And yes, Regen is huge with defense sets. Yeah, mostly patience is my problem. I have a dedicated farming character already maxed, so budget isn't really a problem... It's just leveling something that endurance heavy is going to be painful one way or the other. I'm still waffling over whether I should make it Tank or Brute, but I just have this image in my head of an ethereal demi-god of dread in a hulking suit of metal armor reaping souls with a massive weapon of some sort. It's *gotta* be doable without ripping my hair out.

jack_nomind
Wouldn't you want Weave for overage to offset debuffs and doing +4/+8s? No. +4s don't get a tohit bonus and you can (should) easily hit >50% defense on an SR tanker w/o weave anyway. SR's greatest claim to fame as a Defense set is its capped DDR, so that's plenty for 'normal' situations. Since you'll likely be on teams with support for the really hard stuff, it should also be plenty for non-normal situations. Taking Weave on an SR usually means you're stealing slots from somewhere else for some reason -- as one example, you can crank up recharge (maybe for a Dark Melee quasi-Rage build) by loading up on normal Defense powers in SR with Agility Alpha and almost no additional slotting. nihilii
I couldn't imagine skipping Weave. On a SR or anything. :D +7~8% def for one extra power pick and one extra power slot seems too good a deal to pass up. In the posted build, Elude is taken instead. But I don't know if some end recovery, movement speed and situational defense against the very rare enemies sporting >+30% tohit makes a crash worth it. Taking Weave makes it easy to reach 59%+ to everything, leaving flexibility with the Alpha choice. Vigor for end woes + Rebirth, Musculature for damage, Spiritual for recharge + Rebirth. YMMV! Erratic1
Short update for anyone that cares. The character, while not a primary focus of mine, seems to be coming along nicely, hitting level 36 yesterday. He had been at 43% defense values before I respec'd out of Combat Jumping, which I did to more easily fit Toughness in. It is a temporary setback, since it was clear to me that IO sets will push him up above soft cap. I have grabbed only four IOs so far: Performance Shiter: Chance for + Endurance, Gauntleted Fist: Recharge/Chance for Absorb, Preventive Medicine: Chance for Absorb, and Reactive Defenses: Scaling Damage Resistance. I should probably snag Steadfast Protection: Resistance/+Def (All). Its the only one that may be worth just making from recipe and not bothering with Attunement on since not having it when exemplaring to beneath level 27 isnt really going to matter. With Performance Shifter, while endurance woes are not completely gone, thing are good enough that I can see waithing for Physical Perfection at level 44. It does mean I currently only switch Toughness on once I sink beneath 60% health. In the respec, I dropped Build Momentum. I had thought it would be useful in pulling to be able to run up to groups and start swinging, but the emergent tactic turned out to be Taunting, which gives enough time to build up momentum via an slow, initial attack like Defendive Sweep. Call Me Awesome
I've never played SR as a tanker but looking over the set I don't see a taunt aura there? Or am I just blind and missing it? If so that would make tanking with the set... challenging. Guardian Survivor, occasional tanker and player of most AT's. Guides: Invulnerability Tankers, The first 20 levels. Auroxis
SR's Taunt Aura is Evasion. The set is very underrated now that you can build up your resists and chain Melee Hybrid+Rune of Protection. Call Me Awesome
Interesting, looking at Mids the description of Evasion does not mention anything about taunt. I have to select the power to see that yes, it will take Taunt enhancements. Guardian Survivor, occasional tanker and player of most AT's. Guides: Invulnerability Tankers, The first 20 levels.
