This is a hot topic with some strong opinions, which is fine. Please remember to keep it polite and not attack someone for having a different opinion to yourself.

Sure, sure, of course, but can I still attack someone for having the same opinion that I do?

I used to slot Caltrops for %damage, but unless a %damage piece is in part of an enhancement set, there is almost always a better choice for the slot that will improve Quality-of-Life for the character. Something like a travel speed increase additional Recovery. Often there is just a better power for a %damage (or an additional set bonus. My general sense after a LOT of play is this: Caltrops is almost always more useful when slotted for Recharge and Slow.

I get why people would throw damage procs in there (or procs in general) but I've always liked Caltrops and the like for the -RunSpeed/Mag 50 Fear, it basically reduces all incoming by half for 45s as the mobs go in and out of Fear.

And unless I mistake what @tidge is alluding to, I can vouch that investment in Rech/Slow pays a lot of dividends when you get the second patch out; my Ill/Traps can (briefly, 7s) have three patches of Caltrops out and I can reliably place a Trip Mine mid-combat during that window, even if my defense is floored.

Trip Mine is proc'd to the gills, of course.

  3. If I recall correctly, the way procs worked in Caltrops/Thorntrops led to the current version of the PPM system; procs still work in *Trops, just not like they used to.  If I throw slots into *Trops, it's usually in a build that needs the -RunSpeed to keep mobs grouped together, i.e. lacking an AoE Immob.  In that case, I slot Ice Mistral's Torment, which seems tailor-made for that power.

  4. Grav/Storm/Stone.  Starts off a little sluggish, but you won't remember that when you're Wormholing mobs across the map into a kill zone populated with multiple Lightning Storms and whatever Tornadoes you've wrought.

If you take Thunderclap and Fissure you've got a 1-2-3 in Wormhole/TC/Fissure that will stun just about anything you'll run into in short order, then you just Gale/Hurricane everything into a corner and wait for Lightning Storm to recharge while your pseudopets grind everything into mush.

Ill/Traps is another interesting drive, especially if you can keep your 'stealth' up to set up Traps while your Phantom Army distracts the nerds.  I hesitate to call this one out for soloing though, because it's a bit tedious until you get Trip Mine and perma-PA.  Once you have those, Ill/Traps is basically foolproof.

I am standing up my new project, a Dark Dark Tank.  I just got all the location badges and plaques.  yeesh.

So, now I am working on Force of Nature.  Got all the badges except...Outlaw.  120 Police to my credit.  Sigh.  Is there any place to find these guys except bank missions?  I've played Red a long time and most of the uniforms in standard missions are private security or RIP.

Any idea or do you just farm bank missions?

If you go to Striga, at the base of the mountain where Council Vampire spawn at night, there's a donut shop where Paragon Police spawn during the day.

Sometimes a high forum rep indicates the individual knows what they're talking about.  Other times, it means they say a lot of things that are popular (or amusing), or that a lot of people agree with.

Having a high forum rep means they have a high forum rep.  It is not reliable indicator of anything but having a high forum rep.

Yes, it does.  But, it's a data point that aids one user to identify another user IS that user and not a parody or spoof, and to give further context to the comment in question.  Think of it like 2-factor (3-factor?) authentication; I see a post I agree with, who wrote it?  I recognize that name. I recognize the avatar/signature.  I recognize the count/rep.  Yep, that's the guy alright.  He's alright.  But, it's probably also used to keep track of people who can eat shit.

@Doc_Scorpion the ratio of posts to reputation was typically helpful for me at least as a gauge.

@roleki you may be spot on regarding self policing..

Well, we haven't done the best job even with visible reps.

And it fucking bums me out that I have to explain that I was - and am - fully cognizant that accumulated rep isn't going away, was never going away, and that people could see it by viewing their profiles.

But only weirdos look at people's profiles.

When I discuss the concept of lack of accumulated forum rep, I mean the visual representation of which I can examine immediately without further interaction with the UI.

  7. On the one hand, no accumulated forum rep will make it more difficult for newer users to develop an assurance that the person they tend to agree with most frequently actually knows what the hell they are talking about.

Lack of rep will be kind of a 'barrier to entry' in and of itself, because when every reaction is based SOLELY on the content of the post in question, you lose most of the 'equity' built into leaving feedback for particular posters... that feeling that kind of perks up when you recognize the person you are agreeing with, and you rememebr you agreed with them on these 10 different posts

On the other hand, forum rep tends to 'organize' into factions over time, with accumulated rep forming a kind of hierarchy of competing confessions.  That doesn't always kill a community, but it will invariably lead to heavy moderation to keep things civil,  which invariably leads to one faction or another feeling itself the 'victor' and the other the 'loser' and THAT is the kind of thing that will kill a community.

On the third hand, I shudder to think what the forums would look like if folks of a certain personality type didn't have a forum reputation to protect, and thus no incentive NOT to say whatever the hell they want.  The inconvenience of having to make another account isn't nearly as effective a deterrent as is the thought of a high-rep account into which you have put many hours of care, accumulating forum rep one post at a time,  only to say something shitty and getting it suspended/banned.

A community with no incentive to self-police is actually kind of shitty.

Then you also need a heal meter.  And buff meters.  And debuff meters.  And control meters.  And all of the meters will have to account for +/- Special so the appropriate player is credited, and each of the control meters will need to reflect exactly how they contributed to the team's performance...

If you're going to open this can of worms, you need something for all of the worms, not just one.

Now that I am thinking about it, wasn't there a brief time where the XP/inf (both?) were doled out proportionate to how much damage the character dealt to the defeated mob?  So Defenders and whatnot would get trickles of XP and the Scrappers/Blasters would get gobs of it?

For some reason that sticks out in my brain right now, and I am sure that is why I shelved my first character (Grav/Kin) in favor of an En/En blaster, because I got to the Hollows and everybody was leveling-up every 30s and my dude was stuck in stasis.

Typing it now, the memory seems right but maybe I'm thinking of another game, though I can't imagine which it would be.

Anyway, point being, seems like the game used to TELL you how much damage you were doing without a damage meter, is what I'm saying, and I recall it being awful.

    Fire Control Superhero Alien

Write a story of a superhero alien who can control fire and protect allies with force fields

"Once upon a time, in a far-off galaxy, there was an alien named Blaze. Blaze was not just any ordinary alien; he was gifted with the ability to control fire and create force fields to protect himself and his allies.

Blaze grew up on a peaceful planet where everyone lived in harmony. But one day, a dangerous alien race invaded, threatening the safety of Blaze's people. Blaze, determined to protect his home and loved ones, used his powers to fight back.

With his fire powers, Blaze was able to incinerate his enemies and with his force fields, he was able to shield himself and his allies from harm. The invading aliens were no match for Blaze, and soon enough, they retreated, defeated.

News of Blaze's bravery spread quickly throughout the galaxy, and soon he became known as a superhero. Other planets in need called upon Blaze to defend them from their own invasions, and Blaze answered their call, using his powers to bring peace to the galaxy.

Blaze's bravery and selflessness made him a symbol of hope for all those in need. He continued to use his powers to protect and serve, becoming one of the greatest superheroes in the galaxy.

And so, Blaze lived a long and fulfilling life, always ready to jump into action to defend those in need, using his powers to bring light to the darkness and hope to those who needed it most. He will always be remembered as a true hero."

Dang it all, "Blaze"?  Unsat, AI.  Unsat.

  10. Well, that's fargin' weird.  Answered this and went to edit it, and my response disappeared.

Anyway, gist was: while the suggestion is not a bad idea in and of itself, I could see it leading to calamity of e-peen measuring.

The game kind of already tells you where your DPS ranks with the AT icons; knowledge of the various primary/secondary pairings in a given AT will let you refine those rankings.

I would also suggest that if you click a teammates Character Info and look at the Powers tab, you can kind of infer how the build is set up from there: if there's lots of set bonuses that fill the screen, or NO bonuses at all, they likely aren't using damage procs to Amp their DPS.  If they have only a handful of set bonuses, they likely are leaning very heavily on damage (or other) procs and will out-damage their peers within that same AT.

  11. If I don't have slots to go for a full set of Gaussian in Aim, I like slotting it with Gauss ToHit/Rech, Gauss% and a 50 Recharge IO.

I forget the exact combo, but spreading 4 Enhancement Boosters between the ToHit/Rech and the Recharge IO, you can get slotted enhancement to 74% - just under the threshold where local recharge impacts the proc chances.

It's not 100%, but configured that way you can usually rely on the proc to fire every time, allowing you to predict when your damage amp will be at its peak and max the damage output during the effect window.
