Use gold titles for more then just costume contest winners
Dacy replied to Laucianna's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Well, it's maybe not ALL the details, but. 🙂 I think the Community Helper role is very present in this community, there are lots of us, just none that are officially recognized as such. Community Liasons, aka Reps, have been decommissioned, but really, as I put in the post, anyone can do an event and request gold titles as a reward. I personally do not love the idea of gold titles being something any and everyone can make for themselves. I mean, we can already title ourselves; perhaps those titles could be expanded, but a gold title has always been an award for something, be it an outstanding base or an outstanding costume, or attendance at a noteworthy event. I know other games have also had titles that were earned for helpers, but I also know that some people are much more interested in the title than in actually helping people, and so it went poorly in that instance. However, it would be cool to have titles for specific sorts of help, such as "Base Helper", "RP Helper", "Build Helper", "Content Helper", "Market Helper" etc. And maybe an "AMA" title for those well versed in all of those things and more. But being able to create gold titles at will would take away all the meaning of the ones that were earned. -
I'm late to the good-bye party (RL has been a beast for the last 3 months), but Veracor, I know you'll be missed. I really enjoyed working with you as one of our judges. You are fair and hard working, with no discernible ego, and I appreciate those qualities immensely! You are always someone who can be counted on, and that set you above many, from the start. I saw in you an excellent leader, who was patient beyond measure (especially with the Keyes Trial. I lost count of how many times we tried for "Avoids the Green Stuff", early on.) I watched, as I'm sure many did, as you calmly accepted someone's blundering mistakes despite clear instructions, with no overt reaction or recriminations. It made your teams a safe place for people who had no idea what they were doing, and I know the community appreciated that greatly. I laughed with your character photobombs during cut scenes; you always knew the exact spot that would give the best effects. Have fun in your new game. 🙂

Removal of all base lists
Dacy replied to thunderforce's topic in Unofficial Homecoming Wiki's Forum
This is true, but just as sg and team and coalition channels are somewhat private, and rules are relaxed unless a complaint is made, so should bases be in the same category. In other words, you'd have to go into a base to be offended if it was inappropriate; once notified, we can take a base off of a list, just as inappropriate names are genericked once reported and confirmed, and people using channels inappropriately are sanctioned if reported and the investigation bears out the complaint. I do not see that all the information related to individual bases should be absent because a very small percentage might be inappropriate, if that is your reasoning; that's punishing the vast majority of COC abiding builders for the possibility a very small few are not in compliance. I still do not want to mess with the base list here, mind; but I disagree that that needs to be or should be a consideration. If a name is inappropriate, or the base is listed as catering to adults, we had already agreed not to list it. -
Removal of all base lists

I appreciate you, BlackSpectre. 🙂 What we tried to do was maintain the wikipages offsite. We have (still) several people who edit and update the pages and make sure they are accurate, it is not just EB and I. It's meant to survive any of us moving on. Our great docs expert, Matsiyan, had automated the update to the wiki so that it would overwrite the old wiki info with the updated directory download. However, the problem was that there was objection to the idea of an informational source being maintained outside of the wiki that the wiki editors could not affect, and there was objection to the plan of having the directory be the source, even to the point of asking people to add their bases to it, rather than to the wiki. So, I agreed to monitor for changes and accept wiki entries as entries to the directory, inputting them there so the two would align. But this was still unsatisfactory, it seemed, to some, and several haggles over minor wording preferences, and then the wiki...do I say, crashed? became uneditable for quite some time. Essentially, I felt there was one person who seemed to have a problem with the directory as sourced, and the issue and then tangential issues were raised again and again until I was thoroughly tired of the whole thing and just wished to be DONE. I appealed to Michiyo, as her name had been mentioned as the one person whose opinion would be respected and honored. This is from a few posts ago: So, Michiyo said that maybe FSBA would be a better place. Thunderforce has decided he agrees (*shock*) and so perhaps the directory should be removed. I said I would wait for Michiyo's ruling, which she clearly has not given (I thought the new rules might say something, but like you, I do not see anything there that pertains), but am so disheartened and tired of dealing with it that I'm happy to remove the directory. It will continue to be kept and updated by us and those that volunteer to do so; it's just that the wiki will not have access to that information. We are not going to put it on FSBA. Trying to do this was enough, we don't want to risk going through such again. Like you, I find the base information to be useful. Lots of people here RP; there is an entire server known as "the RP server"; this is why Everlasting has the most and the best bases. They tie directly to the RP game, a large section of this game's population. There are people who do nothing in this game OTHER than bases. There are people who never fight mobs, but only RP and use the bases created for RP. And it's helpful for RPers to see what is out there. It's helpful for builders to know where to find examples of certain types of bases. And many like you find base hopping to be enjoyable. So I, too, think a directory would be a worthwhile inclusion, else I would not have tried to include it, but now, I'm just ready to let it go. I have, in the past, updated some of the pages, which are woefully out of date. However, life at the moment is tumultuous and overly full, and I am barely managing a minor amount of base building and the current showcases; and soon, it will be Halloween, which is a huge time commitment every year. Perhaps, if I can get past the negative associations I have at present with editing in the wiki, and I have more time, I will update the pages in the future. That last thing you said, about the online tools, that is what I meant about automated. It's not that a computer goes, Oh, it's time! And makes the update; we have to do that, and all of the information has been checked beforehand, and all changes are looked at to make sure they were the correct changes. I just meant we don't have to go in and do it line by line and base by base. 🙂 Press a button, look at the changes, if it's right, you're done. That's pretty automated, to me! You could add a link to the topic where Easter Bunny consolidated all of the helpful guides for bases, including my video tutorial channel, for those who prefer to see it done, rather than reading the instructions (depending on the type of learner one is). You see, there are guides to things like what light sources actually give light, a link to a source giving more music sources than the wiki lists, and so forth. Even our Discord is listed, as it has become a resource all on its own. This one link includes the directory as well, although that has an additional topic all to itself, because people won't read. Here is the link: -
Removal of all base lists
Dacy replied to thunderforce's topic in Unofficial Homecoming Wiki's Forum
Easter Bunny and I are happy to take down the directory. May we inform people that the link may be found on the forums? Would linking to the forums be against the rules? I note that you have a lot of "player content" that has a disclaimer on it that contains such links, so I know that they exist. I might expect such a disclaimer noted for any such link. But we are tired of contending over this, and removing it seems best, to us. BlackSpectre, I appreciate your thoughts as to why you think that making the document essentially sourced on the wiki and maintained on the wiki would be easier; however, the document exists and will continue to exist, outside of the wiki. Therefore, to make sure the information does not diverge as it did before, if we maintained the information so that it could be edited on the wiki, that doubles the work we have to do, because now we're not just maintaining the primary source, but we have to monitor and align that information with the wiki, do you see? Now, going by the number of entries entered on the wiki and not the original directory first, the number of people who go to the wiki to make this sort of entry is small, so in theory that's not a lot of work; but it still involves monitoring, and is definitely not easier than maintaining one source with an automated update. However, since wiki is supposed to be a reference where people can find information, certainly a number of people would expect to find information on bases here, so some reference to where they can find it would seemingly be appropriate. One thing that confuses me, Thunderforce referenced new rules, but I cannot find them listed out, so am unclear as to what is being referenced here. -
Does that mean I should signify that it's a WIP (work in progress)?
-
Did you place something between those plates when you positioned them?

I do want to clarify that, although of course funds are always welcome, and I'm happy to stand as middleman between donors and base hosts should people want to donate, the main reason I posted this is because I just cannot, this year, be the driving force for any of the haunted houses other than my own. If you want to hand out treats, it's a wonderful thing to be able to do. It builds community. It expresses the enduring spiritual makeup of this community: one of generosity, sharing, and fun. It gives you a chance to show off your base, and help others out at the same time. So I do encourage people to step up and host, and for those that have never experienced a virtual haunted house, come see why Everlasting loves the Witch's House. I want all the people on all the shards to be able to participate, but the energy it takes to make sure all of the shards have at least one base, get the information and donations (which I put together, usually, so the amounts are right) to each, publicize, and coordinate, is just more energy than I have to give right now. So my fallback is to encourage people from all the shards to come to the base I created just for this event, get treats, and have an experience that has kept hundreds coming back year after year, even on the days there aren't treats to hand out. And for those that DO wish to host their own, awesome, I'm here as a resource.

Hi, Halloween Fans! As all but the newer players may know, every year for 4 years, I've done a server-wide Halloween Giveaway. I've worked to find at least one base on every server, solicited donations, arranged publicity, handed out the how-to on the treat distribution, distributed treats, and run my own haunted house, the Witch's House, on Everlasting. I've really enjoyed being able to do this, but I admit, it has been a lot of work, especially last year. Last year, as CR, we also did a contest so the bases handing out treats were able to get titles and there were other rewards for participants. However, I ended up with two shards that did not participate at all, and one shard that only had a base because I asked the builder, and someone else volunteered to staff it. This year, I'm not CR, my main donor has decided they are done with the Giveaway, and my life is pretty crazy. So, I have decided that I need to simplify. Going forward, the Giveaway will have nothing to do with any contests (there will be Halloween related base events, likely including a contest, so stay tuned for that). People who would like to host a Giveaway (where trick or treaters come to the base, you give them valuable treats) may, of course; however, I will not be funding other Haunted House Giveaways. I will not be recruiting other bases to host. I do hope that there will be others who pick up the gauntlet; I know there are some who have and will, for instance, Envee on Excelsior has always been self-funded with her Halloween Houses, and publicizes her own efforts as well. There are a lot of farmers who have more inf than they realistically know what to do with; some of the more generous may want to donate some if you but ask. I will definitely be hosting a Haunted House and Giveaway, as usual, the two weekends before Halloween on Everlasting at the Witch's House. I will happily help anyone who wants to participate by hosting their own giveaway, with any information they need. I welcome anyone who wants to help out by donating, become a "scare actor" or behind the scenes helper with the Witch's House, and I encourage everyone from every server to come and stop by during the times when we are open! But, certainly for this year, I am no longer going to be reaching out to all of the servers to coordinate a server wide event. I'm putting this message out now, instead of waiting until October, so that anyone who might be hoping to do something related to Halloween has time to plan. So here's hoping that some people will!

Announcing the next Base Showcase! Again, there is no criteria for posting a base here; you don't need to have a base that is "at a certain level", has been "judged worthy" or even, is completed! Just showing off what we got. If your base fits in the Nature category (mostly natural setting) or the Other category (a mix of things, or a base that did not fit well in other categories), please post it here! Looking for bases on all the shards, please!! Format: Base Code: (Base name if you like, but it won't be listed in the Tour Hub) Globals: (builder, owner, whomever you'd like to get any comments/credit) Shard (aka server): Special Considerations: (is it a Work in Progress? Would it be nice to have fly in this base, to get around better? Did it win an award?) You might have a sign up in the base to ask people/remind people to please send comments to @yourglobal. And that's all! Thanks!!

Zac's idea is good; you could add some swirling debris from fx as well to give it more of a tornado feel. I'd also go thru all the fx to see if any appeal to your particular aesthetics more. Directional fogcan work well....this was done by another player.

Wravis, with your permission, I would rather hold this back for next month's Showcase, Nature/Other? Since it's pure nature. I'm not putting it in the Tour hubs yet, pending your response. Please feel free to choose the next appropriate base for you to show off. 🙂 -

I hope that people who are visiting bases will visit both of the servers (or all, if more show up...). There are wonderful bases everywhere! -

It's time for our next Showcase! Life-Like is the next category, and we expect it to be BIG. We're looking for realistic/part of life types of bases and works in progress: things like apartments, houses, places you'd visit in the real world. Not naturescapes, because that category is NEXT month, along with "Other", which should catch those bases that just didn't fit well in other categories, or, had multiple categories in the base. Count teleporters that function as doors or elevators as realistic, given the limitations we have in this editor. Please list the base this way: Shard: Base Code: Builder or Owner: (Include builder's global and anyone else who might like to get comments, such as an owner or co-builder.) Special Considerations: Is this a WIP? (Work in Progress) Should people have flight to see or navigate in this? Did it win any awards?) Reminder: to enter the showcase, we'd like to see the bases listed in the Directory, please. Please update or enter your base if you have not yet done so (code can be "DM owner" or something similar if you'd like the base to be private outside of the Showcase, but the Directory helps others know the base exists). Let's see those bases! We have people who have been eagerly waiting for this category to appear! Thank you!

My go to is the bottoms of shower floors, on a 1/4 grid, they lay perfectly without overlap. If conserving pieces, a substation foundation, but I don't really like it.

There is an all inclusive directory, searchable, meant to consolidate all the directories so that you know where to find things. Please be sure that you post any bases you wish to have listed, there as well. 🙂 (see my sig for link!)

Congratulations to all the builders, and we're glad you entered your work! All the floats were great!
