Ice/Time "Walking Wall" Build

Recommended Posts

So I was recently experimenting with an Ice/Nature build, trying to build a character who could be played mostly passively using Arctic Air. It's not bad overall, but high level enemies still give him trouble. Then I looked over at Time Manipulation and... oh my god.

Anyway, here I present an Ice / Time build that is soft capped to all positions., with maxed out Slash/Lethal defense. On top of this, the -65% Recharge in Distortion Field handily replaces the otherwise unwieldly Shiver. Since it stacks with Arctic Air, putting the field over yourself results in capping -Recharge on all enemies up to +2. A cast or two of Frostbite and that's taken care of up +4.

By the way, Jack Frost? Also soft capped to all positions courtesy of Farsight + his native Defenses.

The only real negative is Energy Torrent is a cone, which is hard to use up close.

Meanwhile, Power Boosted Arctic Air has confuses that last 13 seconds each--meaning, effectively, for those 15 seconds Arctic Air behaves against +4s the same as it does against +0s. A carpet of control.

Yes, there are probably better matches for Time Manipulation than Ice Control. But for the sheer "OMG is that a walking wall of control headed my way" factor this one cracks me up.

Comments welcome, of course.

I do think that if you're not looking for much damage, Time is the best combination with Ice. They stack -Recharge very nicely, they both have important reasons to be in melee, and Time's strong defenses and healing keep you alive to utilize Arctic Air in melee. It's a very good defensive combination, and since you're relying very much on toggles and Time helps with Recharge anyhow, you're free to slot sets up for defenses rather than for Recharge.

Jump.

UP.

Jumping up will point the Cone DOWN into a PBAoE(ish) area around where you jumped straight up from.

I call it the Hop 'n' Pop.  🚀

Great tip.

BTW I forgot to mention the thing that makes me LOL most about this build. For this you'd literally be spamming Power Boost whenever it is up to double the effect of Arctic Air. Based on the Recharge in the build, it would be available about 50% of the time assuming normal proc rates for the +100% proc. Normally Power Boosted mezzes aren't a huge deal. But in Arctic Air, with a 30% chance to Confuse for 13 seconds (~7.5 against +4s) you'd Confuse everything in Range because duration exceeds average chance.

This is one of the very few builds where you could the make use of the interface proc that provides Confusion chance. Normally, it sucks. But here it stacks with your already good chance to Confuse and provides extra Confuse saturation.

What I'm looking at now is how far I can push this also bringing Clarion into the picture with its +Special effect. It means a 30 second gap in mezz coverage, so I'm looking to see if I can make this in a way to cover that gap. Stay tuned (or chime in 🙂).

Oedipus I think you're missing out on one of COH's greatest joys here; Teleport!

Actually the new Burst of Speed power is one of my favorite play things. It's Super Speed mixed with Teleport and very useful for AE content.

This is going to sound weird, but, consider swapping out Glacier in favor of Flash Freeze.  When soloing, an AoE Sleep that is up every mob is more valuable than an AoE Hold that is only available every 1.5 or 2 mobs; on teams, the AoE hold is usually reserved for stacking mag and you've already got that in /Time.

ETA it also frees up Unbreakable Constraint for slotting in one of your other Holds, if that's something you felt you were missing out on.

This is an awesome idea Tex.

Can anyone tell me how flash freeze works with procs? will it damage and then sleep or sleep and then damage?

From what I remember, it damages, notifies the hit mobs and the misses, puts them in an aggro stance, then puts the hit mobs to sleep and leaves the aggro'd mobs heading in your direction.  My clearest recollection is it was a bad idea and I dumped it ASAP.

So you get the sleep but you better confuse/hold/stun/other before you wake em up or you still take alpha. still tempting though.
