Dark/Dark power choice help

Gulbasaur

Recommended Posts

I starter playing with a dark/dark corruptor for my redside levelling guide and I have a few questions about power choices. I picked the set because the soul noir effects are cool and the -ToHit is pretty awesome. I am currently only at level 10 (levelling the slow way to explore story arcs). I've got enough inf to kit it out semi-decently while levelling, which notably makes endurance much less of a pain in the arse and gives you an early defence boost. I'll be mostly soloing or duoing with a nature-water defender and so far we've been rocking along very well.

I'd like a levelling/exemplar-friendly build in the end. I don't really need any advice about IOs unless there are any unusual interactions, so please correct me if I'm wrong:

Dark Blast + Gloom = bread and butter attacks. The recharge on gloom is stupid, but it's still pretty decent.

Moonbeam snipe/filler attack.

Dark Pit - either skip or take very late - the stun duration isn't long enough to really be any good?

Tenebrous Tentacles - eventually going to go half -ToHit and half damage with my sets to use as a defensive power. So far, this is a very good investment.

Night Fall - will definitely pick up as it's a cone to follow up on the above.

Torrent - will probably skip

Life Drain - looks decent as a latter-stage attack chain power.

Blackstar - run-of-the-mill nuke? Take and proc out.

Twilight Grasp - had to take this, but it's such an excellent power with the debuffs and the giant-sized heal that it'd be stupid not to.

Tar Patch - -res is always a win and the slow keeps them where you want them.

Darkest Night - I will take this, but getting at attack chain was higher priority. Presumably slot for endurance and -ToHit?

Howling Twilight - I'll take this eventually. It looks like an interesting power as it's a very powerful debuff as well as an AoE rez... but it's a "when I have room" power.

Shadow Fall - Obvious choice with good defence bonus and room to slot IOs.

Fearsome Stare - Mag 3 fear with 17 second base duration? Absolutely taking this one as Fear is possibly my favourite status effect as it's very powerful but also isn't an instant-win buttonProbably will go for Glimpse of the Abyss in the long run.

Petrifying Gaze - skip?

Black Hole- skip.

Dark Servant - I generally dislike pets but this one is zero-maintenance and farts out status effects so I'm thinking it's an easy win.

For IO sets, I'm going to do the typical focus on defence and recharge then damage and a bit of semi-random resistance. Most of the attacks do -7.5% ToHit, so that's certainly worth playing around with as that's very powerful. I think I'll go all-in on -ToHit on one of the cones and scatter a few in here and there.

Power Pools I'm looking at are sorcery (mystic ward, enflame, mystic flight) mostly for flavour. I'm not too concerned about being super meta as this game really does have a low difficulty cap with IOs in play. I'll probably take Maneuvers if my endurance is holding up and might get Recall Friend because it's an absurdly useful power if you team a lot.

I'll probably go Dark for the ancillary as well for the endurance boost power (I have a dark/dark tank, so I'm familiar with the powers).

Anything I've missed? Are my instincts on point?

Tenebrous Tentacles  vs Tar Patch

I am wondering if Both are necessary.

------------------TT-------------TP

Cast time; ----1.67------------3.1

Duration------17.88----------45

Recharge------10-------------90

End Cost------10.19----------7.8

Range---------40-------------90

Size-------40 Cone-----------25 Radius

TT gets 75% ACC and a Mag 3 Immobilization. Also does some Damage

TP gets -90% run spd and -30% Rez

You can keep TT up but at a pretty rough End cost.

TP lasts longer than a spawn will and needs very few slots allocated.

I can see why you may have Both but if powers start getting tight I would drop TT

Am I incorrect?

EDIT;

As a matter of fact, TT vs Fearsome Stare is a Much Closer comparison. Both have Mag 3, same Duration, 75% ACC and I think FS wins due to cheaper End cost and a HUGE area of effect. TT is 40 range with a 40 degree arc while FS is 70 range and 45 degree arc.

That whole comparison was very worthwhile, thanks. I am struggling a bit with the early attack chain (more than anything I've played in a while) and TT is there so at least I'm doing something. Being exemplar friendly is something I value so I'm not sure I'm quite ready to get rid of it. I might just 3-slot TT for -ToHit and use it as a debuff, bit it also has a bit of proc potential.

Oh and sorry meant to include this in my last post (tired).  Skip Dark Pit, it sucks.  Cone with no damage and mag 2 disorient is meh.  Howling Twilight is MUCH better imho and adds more control and damage to the mix.  A lot of players don’t realize that to use HT, you DON’T need a fallen ally to use it.  Just a target that needs an ass kicking! 🙌🏻

I would not bother slotting TT for any -tohit, the base value isn't very high. If you really want more -tohit in your build then Fearsome Stare is a place you can get some because it has much higher -tohit value. Still I would prioritize the control value; also, most fear sets suck in terms of their # splits, I'd just yank the best multipart pieces and the procs out.

Tar Patch's -resistance is huge, it's worth it just for that I think. But you don't need to invest in it, just 2 recharge and done.

There's a -tohit set with a darkness damage proc that can go into pretty much every power in the set. While I'm not a super fan of proc monster builds, it's an on-theme damage proc that will probably be extremely good in powers like TT and Fearsome Stare.

I would seriously consider slotting Fearsome Stare for -ToHit as much as for fear-- that thing is a massive ToHit debuff. The fear is pretty good out of the box but the -ToHit is -18.7% for 20 seconds. That's the same -ToHit as darkest night, and easier to use (no worry about your target getting killled off).  Between Fearsome Stare and Darkest Night alone you can completely floor the other side's ToHit. That's huge. (Fearsome Stare can be a good opener on team's where nobody else wants to take the alpha-- one stare and there isn't much coming back at you often, and what there is probably misses!)

Tenebrous Tentacles is a damage power. Slot as such though as corruptor you may get more bang out of procs in this one.  The fast snipe changes have made Moonbeam possible in your attack chain.  You may or may not need Life Drain, it's a mediocre attack / small self heal not GREAT at either and you probably don't need the self heal.  Pet Gaze is a subpar hold but handy to have against annoying things like Sorcerers and Sappers even if not slotted heavily.

Anchor death is actually not an issue. The anchor now persists as long as the dead body does. It can actually be an excellent tactical choice to anchor something like darkest night on a minion who dies in the initial wave - no worrying about fleeing; it essentially turns the anchor into a GTAOE. Still between Darkest Night, Tar Patch, Fearsome Stare, and Tenebrous Tentacles you really only have to worry about a teleporter getting away with your anchor!

I did a minor respec and dropped tenebrous tentacles in favour of howling twilight, and I'm happy enough with that decision. I'm going to work on cranking my recharge up a bit without taking Hasten (which I refuse to take on principle, but double standards do permit me to use and abuse IO set bonuses).

I grabbed torrent, which I'm putting a KB2KD modifier in and then the +recharge one.

might grab tenebrous tentacles again at some point - I'm mostly duoing with a nature/water defender so we're both quite patch and AoE focused and having enemies that don't run off is handy. Fearsome stare looks very good, though, so we'll see how that pans out.

Thank you everyone. I'm really enjoying the corruptor so far.The damage is definitely on the low end, but I should be able to proc out a bit more in time. Between my -dmg and -ToHit and the defender's healing we are absurdly safe.

This is a Defender version that i play, it serves me well and should port over to Corruptor without too much trouble.  Swapping Assault for Maneuvers should allow you to get the defenses close.  You can split slot Scourging Blast for recharge the same way Vigilant Assault is and Malice of the Corruptor has the same defensive bonuses as Defender's Bastion.  Not saying that is what you have to do but just putting this out there as something to use for inspiration.

Here is a build I just whipped up. I'm sure it can be further min/maxed with some extra time invested, but for now you have 60% s/l res, softcapped melee/range, almost perma souldrain, perma hasten, almost max base dmg snipe, decent end usage to end/s and dark consumption to help every once in awhile.
