Richnats Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 My current PC is in need of a replacement if I want to continue to play COH. If I were to invest in a new desktop can I get a modern non gaming desktop for preferably under $400? Also because I'm in a budget I cant really afford to pay top price. If it is a newer model can I get by with an HDD drive rather than an SSD drive? I'm on disability so I can't afford to spend too much money on a new PC. Thanks
_NOPE_ Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Well, I just picked up this little baby for less than $200: Dell OptiPlex 7010 Minitower Desktop PC - Intel Core i5-3470, 3.2GHz, 8GB, 1TB, DVD, Windows 10 Professional (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K0GNUOG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WgL5Cb9KAM2RT So... Yes. I'd say, get something that's a refurbished quad core or better, and buy a cheap video card separate. You'll be all good. I'm out.
Richnats Posted May 23, 2019 Author Posted May 23, 2019 So just to make sure. If it is a "modern" new PC I purchase to play COH with, can I purchase a PC with an HDD drive instead if one with an SSD drive? I'm on a budget and I've read PC's with an SSD drive are a little more expensive than ones with just an HDD drive.
Erydanus Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Well, the performance gain for an SSD for anything that like, reads graphical map textures is pretty huge. Plus, the cost of them has really gone down as they become the trend. It's not an issue now. I just hit up Newegg and checked and they have 320 gig traditional hard drives that are in the $18-30 range mostly about $20. I looked up SSDs, and they have a 120 gig one (which is what my copy of Windows and COH is installed in that's ...well $22. (Meanwhile they have a Samsung EVO SSD that's 500 gig on sale for $78. Ooooh maybe I should replace my 2ndary drive that I keep MP3s on now...) See me on Excelsior as Eridanus - Whisperkill - Kid Physics - Ranger Wilde - The Hometown Scrapper - Firewatch - and more!

Thanks You are in luck because CoH will run on what is essentially a potato by today's standards. At my house 3 of us play on laptops that range from a $300 Walmart Dell that's 3 years old to a $700 tablet convertible all with on-board video and the best having 8GB RAM and a Ryzen 5 4 Core processor. As long as you stay away from a Celeron or Atom processor it should run. Here are the original system specs for CoH: https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/city-of-heroes/10282
Richnats Posted May 23, 2019 Author Posted May 23, 2019 Thank you Goblin. With my budget I'm only allowing myself to spend the money on the cheapest PC or laptop i could afford that will allow me to play COH without worry. Even if it just have an HDD.
The Fifth Horseman Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 Don't worry about it, you can always add an SSD later. Ultimately they're a convenience - just there to reduce load speed.
Mikazuki Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 Can run CoH on my 300$ windows 10 tablet quite well, no video card involved. Bizarre thing is if i dont use a mouse CoH wont start at all, gives me a direct x error telling me to update then the next message up is that a mouse and keyboard could not be detected, but works fine once i activate a blutooth mouse. Pretty sad, was hoping to mess around in coh during my commute, using a mouse in a bus is kind of awkward.
Erydanus Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 Miz, can you run a virtual mouse program to fool it? What about an alternative input device? Mini USB touchpad? a mini mouse for netbooks? joystick? Richnats Posted May 24, 2019 Author Posted May 24, 2019 Thanks for all of your advice. I decided to spend a little more than I planned. I found this on sale at Office Depot. I think this should run COH okay. Its not top shelf but it suits my needs since COH is really the only game I plan on playing for the foreseeable future. Right now I'm waiting for all if my files to be transferred to the new PC from my external hard drive. https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/8720053/HP-Pavilion-590-p0016-Desktop-PC/fromLocalBrowse=false
The Fifth Horseman Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 There are known issues with COH on Intel HD Graphics + Windows 10 .
_NOPE_ Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 Oh yeah, I kind of assumed that he had a video card on his old PC that he was going to transfer over... bad assumption. Good luck! I always go with NVIDIA cards, so I never even consider onboard video... I'm out.

Using a mini Bluetooth mouse right now, the tablet keyboard case i got didnt have a touchpad sadly. But can look into virtual mouse programs, not sure how those would work with touchscreens tho.

The Intel UHD graphics set is the next version of the HD set my wife's laptop, which is the oldest of the three we have, and she runs CoH at the Ultra-details including the cell shading without issue. The only thing I would say is you will almost assuredly get an out of date graphics driver message when you run the program. It can be safely ignored.

You'll have to sort something else out for the buttons though (remapping?)
