Stevewince Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 When I was a kid, we always had computers. They were my fathers work computers though, so there were zero graphics capability. When I saw City of Heroes as a kid, it was literally mesmerizing. It was everything I wanted, customization, super villains, and community. I tried everything I could to get a computer that could run this game, but as a kid my attempts were in vain. By the time I finally got a computer that could run the game, its time had come and gone.. I've tried filling the void of this game by playing DC UNIVERSE or whatever it was, but the connection and desire to play wasn't there. I wanted to make my own super hero(villain), not follow in the footsteps of one that has already been over used for the last 20 years. Honored and so god damn excited, I'll see ya'll on the streets. I can't wait for this installer to finish.
Pixie_Knight Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Welcome to Paragon, and may you enjoy your time here. DC Universe Online is a good game, but they never really tried to compete with City of Heroes. Rather they wanted to be played alongside CoH. Cryptic's second attempt at a superhero MMO flopped fairly hard. Champions Online is okay, but it's very easy to burn out within a few weeks of playing. And it's just not as fun as CoH was. It kind of offends me that Champions Online is still around with official servers when CoH got the axe. But oh well.
rookery. Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Welcome to Paragon City. DOn't feel overwhelmed when you first gt in. There is a lot to kind of pick up. DO read those mission intros. DO use the Help channel in game to ask. You should get a response if folks know the answer. I highly recommend the Twinshot missions as they give you a good background for what you can do and where you can go. I also highly recommend making a scrapper or a brute or blaster for ease of play. Just to get your feet wet. Kheldians and masterminds are kinda out there. Just a recommendation though. If you develop altitis I'm sure you'll have plenty of khelds and mms. Have a blast!

To be fair, Kelds and Arachnos archtypes were a reward for getting a character to level 50 for a reason. By the time you reached level 50 you were ready for the new challenge. Of course, wolf spiders and Widows aren't 'hard mode' like Warshades and Peace Bringers are. EDIT: And for gods sake, if you do make a warshade or peacebringer the first thing you should do upon entering the tutorial is creating a macro to target Void Hunters. I'd have to look up the exact way to phrase it, but have the macro search for and target enemies named 'void'. And always use that macro before engaging. You'll regret it if you don't. Void Hunters are your bane, and require priority targeting. As well as leading off with a Hold if you've got one. Otherwise they can 2 or 3 shot you, regardless of your level.
Shou Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 When I was a kid, we barely even had the internet in my country. Watching the trailer was so rad, but I couldn't play it. Being able to play the game now is a huge blessing. Big thank to the team behind this. Dreamed of playing the game once. It came true.
Without_Pause Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 So many builds and ATs play differently. Don't worry too much about making new heroes and trying out things to see what works for you. I played when it originally came out. I had 40+ characters. This time around I started with 8. Rerolled 7 and added 3 more. I have rolled one character with a power set that wasn't around when I played last, so I have a number to go if I ever get inspired to. In other words, even knowing what I like, I still have over a page worth of characters. A Willpower brute will likely be one of the most straight forward first time characters to use. Select your primary, toggle up, and go. Top 10 Most Fun 50s. 1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute. 10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller. "Downtime is for mortals. Debt is temporary. Fame is forever."
Myrmidon Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Welcome to the only place to be. My suggestion is to avoid double XP, running the sewer trial more than once or anything that levels your character too quickly. This game is about the journey and the first time through really is better at a normal pace. Once you have things down, then those other options are more viable. Playing CoX is it’s own reward
Pixie_Knight Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 Been playing the last few hours. And it feels like I'd never left.
Sable Phoenix Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 This is one thing I find so amazing and gratifying about this rebirth of the City of Heroes. There are an awful lot more people than I expected who never had the chance to play it when it was live, and who have looked at it ever since with longing rather than nostalgia. And there are more than expected who are being introduced to it for the first time and are enjoying it, and it's wonderful to see realized what I always suspected but could never prove; this game still holds up, even to a "modern" gaming audience.
Pixie_Knight Posted May 23, 2019 Posted May 23, 2019 I'd long suspected that the real reason the servers started losing population over time was due to NCSoft not advertising it at all. This meant there wasn't really an influx of new players, just old players returning for new issues or expansions. Then when they played the new stuff to death, they'd leave again. The biggest thing NCSoft did to advertise the game was... shut it down. At which point so many people who never heard of it were wondering what is so special about this closed down MMO that has people so up in arms about it's shutdown, while so many others fade away without even a whimper. The fact the game still holds up just proves how great a job was done making it to begin with. And how good a job those responsible for it's rebirth did at recreating it.
