Stalker's Guile Hide Proc Internal Cooldown?

Hello! I've encountered something odd with the Chance to Hide proc, and wanted to see whether other people are encountering the same behavior and if it's a known, intentional aspect of the enhancement.

 

By my calculations, my current slotting puts its proc chance comfortably above 100% (so it gets clamped to the 90% proc chance cap), but it doesn't fire off anywhere close to 90% of the time. In testing done by both myself (Street Justice / Super Reflexes) and a friend (Staff Fighting / Super Reflexes), we found that after the proc triggered there was a roughly ten second window in which it refused to fire again regardless of its theoretical chance to proc.

 

This behavior was not mirrored by other procs in the power; when slotted with both Mako's Bite Chance for Lethal proc (3.5 PPM) and the Superior Stalker's Guile proc (5 PPM), the Mako's Bite proc frequently fired back-to-back when spamming Assassin's Strike off cooldown — something that the Stalker's Guile proc never did, despite its notably-higher PPM. If we waited around ten seconds after the Hide proc fired to try hitting AS again, it went off around 90% of the time as expected. This seems to suggest the Chance to Hide proc has a specific internal cooldown period during which it can't fire again, which doesn't seem to be listed anywhere that I could find. It's entirely possible there's something else going on, but I'm not sure what it would be.

 

I'm including the build used in testing as an attachment for reference, and the proc chance calculations I used in the spoiler below.

Probability to Proc = PPM * (MRT+ CastTime) / (60 * AreaMod)

MRT = BaseRecharge / ( 1 + RechargeBoost_from_Enhancements_and_Alpha / 100 )

 

Using the Mids information for Assassin's Strike in Street Justice:

MRT = 15 / ( 1 + 23.19 / 100 ) = 12.176

Probability to Proc = 5 * (12.176 + 1.17) / (60 * 1) = 1.11219 = 111.219% (Clamped to 90%)

The chance to proc is 111.219% (Clamped to 90%)  but that does not change the number of times it occurs per minute, does it?  5PPM.

It just means you have a 90% of being successful  up to 5 times in one minute, or every 20 seconds.
Does your Assassin's Strike really recharge in 10 seconds? If so, good job!
Maybe I am missing something? You still have to wait for AS to recharge, correct?

I don't see anything about it anywhere either, but it probably does have a lockout of 10 seconds as when I use it in my rotation (StJ as well) it only procs every other Strike. I haven't played my other stalkers in awhile, but I'll definitely test it when I get the chance. I usually just save the chat log for 100 attacks on a dummy and run a Find All in Notepad++, if someone else wants to beat me to it. 😛

That's not how procs work.  You are missing a lot.

You appear to have some misconceptions about how things work.

 

PPM is by no means a guarantee that a proc will happen X times per minute, or no more than X times per minute.  Normal PPM just affects the chance to fire.

 

So, imagine you had a single-target attack with two procs in it.  Proc A has PPM 1, and Proc B has PPM 2.

 

If the attack has a base cooldown of 60 seconds, and you do not slot any recharge reduction, then it looks at the PPM and says, "This attack can only fire once per minute, and so even if it's used on cooldown, it won't cause either proc to fire more than once per minute."  So it gives both procs max (90%) chance to fire.

 

Now suppose that you enhance it with 100% recharge reduction, lowering the cooldown to 30 seconds.  Now the code says, "This attack can be used (at most) twice per minute.  I'll try to make each proc have a rate such that on average, they will fire 1 and 2 times per minute."  It sets Proc A's chance to fire to 50% (so if you use the attack 2x per minute, you'll average 1 proc activation per minute), and Proc B's chance still to max, 90% (so you'd expect 1.8 activations per minute).

 

Ah, but now say that you also have 100% global recharge.  PPM doesn't know about global recharge.  Proc A's chance to fire will still be 50%, and Proc B still 90%.  But the true recharge of the power will be now 20 seconds, so you can, at most, activate it 3 times per minute.  At that point, you'd expect Proc A to fire 1.5 times per minute (despite its PPM of 1) and Proc B to fire 2.7 times per minute (despite its PPM of 2).  It is eminently possible for each proc to fire up to 3 times per minute -- though you'd have to get somewhat lucky for them to do that.

 

Now, there is an additional concern, which is that some (not all!) PPM procs also have a global cooldown, such that its proc chance to clamped to 0% for N seconds following an activation.  We know that for example the heal procs in Call of the Sandman and whatever the new EndMod set is called do that.  But we don't know whether the Stalker ATO proc does it.  And that's what the OP is asking about.

Pretty sure it's been like that since live. Back in 2012, I had to make the StJ chain 12 seconds long to get the ATO to trigger exactly when needed, before CU (60 seconds/5 PPM=12 seconds). Nowadays, it actually works great with an 11 second chain, but really buggy with a 10 second chain. BU is used at the beginning and before any AS instead of IS. BU cast time isn't calculated into the chain time.

 

12s chain: [BU}-AS-CU-SB-[IS/BU]-AS-SC-SB-[IS/BU]-repeat. 

11s chain: [BU]-AS-CU-SB-[BU]-AS-SC-SB-[IS/BU]-repeat. 

10s chain: [BU]-AS-CU-SB-[BU]-AS-SC-SB-repeat. 

 

The 10s chain, ATO still procs once per cycle but often switch to critting Sweeping Cross instead of CU.

This game is way too buggy and missing tons of information so I'm unofficially going with "Yes there's a 10 second lockout time.*"

 

*Tested against a custom character in AE and can't confirm it never procs under 10 seconds (chat logs are unreliable as it says "You enter a hidden state" every time I used AS), here's 2 instances of a crit under 10 seconds apart and it did this a total of 6 times out of 35 (Not reliable, but still possible.):

Interesting! Did you notice if those criticals were actually a result of you entering Hide via the proc? Stalkers have a 10% baseline crit chance even when un-Hidden (which goes up by another 3% for every person on your team), so seeing another power crit after an Assassin's Strike in the combat log doesn't necessarily mean it was the result of the Hide proc firing.

 

The chat log insisting that you're entering a Hidden state every time you hit with AS is especially interesting, though; I hadn't noticed that, before! This could point to the proc actually firing 90% of the time like it's supposed to, but there being some factor that suppresses the Hide from actually applying? My original theory for all of this was that it had something to do with the Hide power suppressing its Hidden status for eight seconds after hitting or being hit by something, but the lockout window seems to be longer than eight seconds and still seems to occur when Hide is detoggled.

On my DB stalker, assy strike recharges in like, 5-6 seconds.

Sadly there's no way in telling which are crits from the proc and which are not.

My AS is up like, every 5-6 seconds, so I'll test this tonight.

 

Test criteria will be,

 

- Use AS only, as soon as it recharges, see if the follow up AS is from hidden and the follow up AS will proc hidden again, chaining hidden

 

- Use AS then ablating after, see if hidden procs and if ablating crits from hidden, then fire AS in under 10 seconds to see if rehidden under 10, if so, fire ablating again, check crit

 

I'll report back tonight or tomorrow.

I think Switch's idea above would work because you could definitely tell due to the slow AS.  

 

The other option could be to use a snipe to definitely know if you're rehidden.  The circle around the snipe should disappear when you reenter Hide.

First chance to test...

 

Dummies didn't spawn. Sheesh. Ok, went to a pylon instead...

 

Assy blades only

- recharge is sub 6 seconds

- fire AB, back into hide

- Follow up AB is from hide

- Third AB is always quick

- I can see the combat log says I re enter hide sometimes, but "hidden" does not show below health/end bar and AB is quick animation, no crit

 

Assy blades>ablating

- recharge on AB is sub 6 seconds

- fire AB, back into hide

- Ablating follows, hits from hide for crit

- fire AB again, under 10 from original AB

- I can see the combat log says I re enter hide sometimes, but "hidden" does not show below health/end bar, no crit

 

I will test again on a dummy when they spawn, but 3 things are clear:

 

1. Combat log says hidden state, no hidden word under health bar

2. Character does not go transparent like it should when re-entering hidden.

3. Even though combat log says hidden, no crit.

 

Perhaps we can get confirmation from a Dev or GM? Not sure who to tag, but there appears to be a a window where, hidden or not, you cannot crit again from hidden, and often combat log says hidden when one is not hidden. I think it may be more like 8 seconds from animation end, or 10 from animation begin of original Assy strike.

Perhaps @Captain Powerhouse could confirm that the proc and hidden having a cool down are working as intended? I can see the logic for it, after all, stalkers are just fine as is and if we could proc chain assassin's strike from hide over and over, that's a bit too over the top. If there is a period of 8 seconds where one cannot rehide that seems as though it's not only intended but a good rule.
