First Fender Try - Poison/Water

VV

Recommended Posts

Hey All, Taking my first good stab at a Defender! Can I get some feedback on my build? I went with Poison because I like the look of the debuffs and the overall variety of the powers. Water is just for fun. It also has a self-heal, some knock mitigation, and a bit of debuff. The character swamp is a pile of sewer sludge has achieve consciousness and arisen to take revenge on polluters. It wears a clunky suit of armor to hold itself together, for now.

One question I have about the build, should I skip Water Jet? It seems to do low damage for a single target attack of its rank. Any feedback on the build is greatly appreciated.

You can play any char combo anyway you want in this game and be successful.

Couple things up front I see. You want to proc out poison trap if you can. it's damage can be significantly higher than you currently have it. it's hold is enough when you combine with procs, whirlpool (proc'd) and the -res from venom gas to take out everything but the boss. We're talking somewhere like 900 pts of damage here. Throw in the 1 second cast time and it's awesome.

I'd throw in Paralytic poison so you can get a second big hitter (proc'd) that will hold a boss potentially.

Lockdown procs in both those powers is tasty.

You are dbl dipping with stealth proc in run and then stealth power itself. Stealth is pretty awesome with this set but only need one option.

You asked about Water Jet and it's better than it looks on paper. with 3 Tidal Power the power becomes instant recharge making it a solid option.

I would personally skip Alkaloid for Neurotoxic Breath. The -rech in that power is very significant (-81.25% for 20 seconds) and will stop more incoming damage than you can heal with Alkaloid.

I have a Poison/Psy that uses Neurotoxic combined with Psy Scream to cripple recharge. Throw in Psy Tornado and damage is not really a concern after the alpha.

Endurance looks to be a problem if you don't have an alternate path to take care of it.

Finally, I'd put more Acc into Envenom. when you want that to hit and it misses it's just crippling.

I'd run something closer to this.

Where to begin...

All that recharge, what is that doing for you really? How many long recharge powers do you have that really benefit from 170% global recharge? Take Geyser - 34 seconds with that level of global recharge. With 30% less global recharge it's at 37 seconds.

But I want perma hasten! Ok perma-hasten isn't the end all be all goal for most builds nowadays. It's nice, but it's not going to kill you if you have a few seconds gap. Plus the FF procs help bridge that gap, and can improve your overall recharge in some cases.

No slow resistance, all that recharge and all it takes is a few slows to flush all that down the drain. Even lol council has galaxies with their -recharge attacks. At the very least you can stick a winter proc in super speed for 20% slow resist.

That 6th slot in decimation, posi blast, armageddon and ragnorok. stacking 21% exotic psi/toxic resist isn't going to contribute to your survival in any meaningful way. If it were S/L resist that might be another matter.

Acc in general. I suppose it'll do if you are fighting +0s all day. Most people benchmark their acc against +3s for endgame. You can certainly rely on team buffs and there most likely will be enough to help you hit consistently but it doesn't hurt to be a little self sufficient. At the very least I'd make sure that envenom and weaken can land reliably. I'd also stick some acc in dehydrate so that lands reliably too. You can afford to sacrifice 1.25% global recharge and slot that with 1 ACC 5 panacea. If it were me though I'd rather slot it like an attack or frankenslot it and maximize damage and healing.

The regen tissue proc in health - it's junk. Dehydrate even when slotted as an attack will do more for you than that proc ever will. It won't save you when things go south and there are plenty of things that do -regen in the game, further diminishing it's value in any build. You are better off putting a panacea proc in it's place.

General slotting inefficiencies, that gladiator armor proc can go into antidote, which takes resist sets. That recharge IO in there doesn't do anything since antidote already recharges fast enough. You can 4 slot stealth and maneuvers 1 LOTG 7.5 and then 3 piece reactive defense including the proc in one, and 3 piece shield wall in another instead of your current slotting of CJ/Stealth/Maneuvers. You lose 1.5 s/l resist that way but gain a good chunk of hp that way. Instead of a karma -kb in CJ you can put a steadfast -kb in elixir of life, and make room for a kismet +acc in CJ which needs no explanation.

Venomous gas is an extremely situational power with this build. You will almost certainly have to depend on your teammates to provide you enough mitigation to allow you to get in the thick of it. And if they can do that already then chances are they don't really need what VG brings to the table in the first place. Plus it's not like you can alpha stike mobs by stealthing in and drop poison trap undetected with VG turned on, with the amount of personal protection you have you'd take a healthy chunk of damage before things start choking and against +3/4s you'd probably just die or get mezzed and then die. A power like VG needs to be built around and this build doesn't quite do it on it's own.

Debating the usefulness of power boost in this build to warrant 2 recharge IOs instead of 1. 33 seconds vs 38 seconds isn't a huge gap. You can take that slot along with slot you shaved from CJ and 4 slot  VG for 5% more global recharge.

There is a camp of people that don't jump on the softcap bandwagon. I prefer to build tank mages but that's not everyone's cup of tea. So with that in mind I made the tweaks but left the core goals of maximizing recharge at the cost of survival in tact. I'm confident that with the FF procs this build will squeeze out more global recharge than your original build.

I sir disagree on this. Guess you can say his extra recharge can be situational  use. I can get Cap recharge For 10/15 seconds with my own buffs on my poison with the use of accolades. I call it my boss killer mode. Blaze and snipe with no waiting.

Also VV here is a pretty fun Poison build I have. It can be very tanky. Almost Cap RES all. But i've learned with poison. The only way to really see the set shine is to really play it aggressively. Its not a set you want to avoid dmg. I always carry purples on me. You gain your hp back through all the Healing procs if you live. It's not a Wate build. But hope this can give you some ideas how on some slotting.

CONTEXT

This is not about you relating to your experiences with your own build, Rather please look at the OP's build and how changes affect that build.

You can make an argument for extreme recharge if you are building proc monsters which rely on global recharge but the OP's build doesn't go that way. You also do not need capped recharge to cycle attacks non-stop. Finally water blast is not fire blast, the single target attacks have lower base recharge and thus are further impacted by diminishing returns from extreme recharge.

A 3 second difference in the nuke as a result of 30% more global recharge is largely inconsequential in the real world. If you zoom in on the single target attacks in OP's original build, even with 30% less global recharge he can still rotate between dehydrate and water jet seamlessly. So where does that 170% global recharge really get him? If you cram that much recharge just to shave 3 seconds off 1 power then the ROI on that is really poor. Meanwhile the build suffers from low defenses, no slow resist, low acc, and all the other holes I pointed out. You don't have to build an uber tankmage, but you can certainly patch some of those holes by shuffling some of those set bonuses.

Finally if you read through my original post and looked at my build you will see the end result patches a lot of those holes at the cost of losing 6% global recharge, and with the FF procs triggering even once, I can surpass the global recharge from the original build.

There are several areas I wouldn't necessarily agree with Nemu on, but the plain fact of the matter is there are lots of ways to build a good char and it all depends on what you want out of it.

VV, your high recharge build is very nice in that you can have a very large nuke/hold every fight along with whirlpool and water burst. It supports a very fast play style that is in your face. I could see that char being second in right on the heals of the tank or stealthing in for that big pt trap (still suggest lockdown proc in that one).

You have several picks I wouldn't make but everyone has their own way of doing it. Just make sure it flows well for you and you can make a very good char out of what you want.

If I was making this char it might be closer to this:

Don't you guys want to live? With those def/res numbers all I see in your guys' future is a lot of pavement in harder content. I'd focus on softcapping defenses and shore up our damage with FF procs and the musculature alpha. This build is softcapped to range and then it will be softcapped to melee also as long as venomous gas is running (you only get about 60% of the debuff on +3s, but it will still be enough to softcap you here). Dehydrate should be enough to keep you healed, especially with almost capped s/l resistance. Hasten will be perma with 2-3 FF procs in 2 minutes (this will happen because it is in geyser and water burst). Poison trap and geyser are your big hitters and you have assault to help yourself and the team out even more.

More than one way to skin an angry level 53 mob my friend. While I'm giving up some ranged D, the melee D (including debuff values for +3) is only 1 pt off yours.

What I get back is an extra source of stun, a rez/stun bomb, the most severe -rech power in the game, a single target hold to make sure the boss goes night night, and a heck of a lot of endurance/recovery.

Pretty sure mine will play fine as long as I keep being aggressive (and I always do).

but as I said earlier, to each their own as long as you enjoy it and can contribute.

This is only true for the first 22.5 seconds of clarion and you start taking a lot more hits as it degrades. Then you will have no +tohit debuffs from clarion for 30 seconds while it recharges.

You can change my build a bit to sacrifice some recharge and still fit in all the powers you want, while keeping ranged defense softcapped and melee softcapped with venomous gas without clarion.

@Darkir Yeah I would build for survival but I don't think most of the posters here are the min/maxing performance chasing type. So I offered critique based on their build and what I saw as their preferences. Not everyone has the same outlook on performance, but I'm sure when they are ready they'll come back and seek feedback.

If you were building for min/max performance tankmage, what would it look like? Honestly, I have no real preferences when it comes to Defenders, this being my first one. I do play aggressively,  I guess if I did say I had a preference, it would be a tankmage, which is where I was trying to get.

Yeah it's a problem around here, people need to ask what the OP wants their build to play like and what numbers to achieve and take that into account before just slamming up their own build.

For me, having all the different build and play styles has been helpful. Heck, I'm just happy people are helping, at all.

If you were building for min/max performance tankmage, what would it look like? Honestly, I have no real preferences when it comes to Defenders, this being my first one. I do play aggressively,  I guess if I did say I had a preference, it would be a tankmage, which is where I was trying to get.

Look no further than @Darkir's build. It's got survival covered.

I'd do a few things differently. I'm firm believer of slow resistance for high end high budget builds. As a blaster player I am also a firm believer of anti-mez powers and I'll always take those.

Steam Spray doesn't jive with the melee-centric playstyle so I skipped it in this build.  It's a toss up between paralytic poison vs alkaloid but paralytic won out because of LGTF.

This build won't have softcap level melee defense but Range defense is more important of the two, you have VG and weaken to debuff the things around you but it's the ranged stuff outside your debuff zone that will kill you. Besides VG has a large radius, if you do micro movements after each power to stay just outside of mobs melee range you will be fine. Movement: it's underrated and the secret to survival.

I chose agility as the alpha because the build could use the recharge, you could just as well swap it out for musculature though, a half a percentage shy of ranged softcap is good enough. If end management becomes an issue vigor is also a good candidate.

Darkir, we definitely differ on our opinion of control powers value here and perhaps what is expected from a set in general. holds, knockabouts, stuns, slows with -rech and the debuffs from weaken I think would be more than effective in providing this combo with the survive-ability needed and much of that happens while attempting to do the needed damage and accuracy (btw, I have extra added in places like envenom and weaken) outlay.

Granted, I'm not looking at pvp at all but then again I never do.

I'm happier with a general build than a specific D setup for this set.

On a different combo I would agree with your Defense approach much more. For instance, a Naff/Beam Rifle would be better served with Higher Defensive numbers in general due a lesser control capacity.
