Dark Dark rebuild

Snarky

Recommended Posts

I have been looking hard a tanker numbers and resist sets the last week.  I ran a Dark/Dark Brute as a main for quite a while.  It was strong and fun.  Now that i have re thought my Resistance armor strategy I will be rebuilding it this way.  More emphasis on Resist, Accuracy (which was very good already) and maturing at 50 rather than chasing cap pre 50.

I am uploading this with Incarnates off, but turn them on and you will see what i mean. Focused Accuracy will be run situationally.  i also plan to monitor all resistance values to check for debuffs and have rune of protection and a couple oranges on constant ready.  Soul Drain is perma.  I looked at this as a Tank (I have one at 50 already) and the build is sloppy easy on Resist and lighter on damage.  To me Dark/Dark does not Tank well due to the perma unsuppressing stealth.  I am a Huge Fan of the Auras on Dark.  they do the Heavy lifting vs trash mobs that lack of defense leaves to be picked up.

Below I will be posting the build I am moving from so you see the evolution of my ideas.

How is this build performing? I just made a Dark/Dark Brute to team up with a friend of mine running a Fire/Time/Dark Corrupter and was planning to use your build. Always liked the idea and aesthetics of Dark Armor, just never got one past the 30s on live.

I'm tempted to make a Dark/Dark Proc Monster, since there's a ton of potential.

A quick look says the toggles alone (Dark Shroud, Cloak of Fear, and Soul Transfer) could have a total of 7 procs between them.  It adds up to a 248% chance of a proc hitting a nearby target.  That will average 176 points of damage every 10 seconds to anything nearby.

And the click AoE's are also really ripe for procs.  Dark Consumption alone will proc for over 300 pts to everything around you.

I would advise caution. Dark Dark can be unstable.  My "refined" build above builds up the (necessary) energy consumption issues, resistance, recharge, and accuracy. Then it slathers on more tankiness with Rune of Protection. If you (in my opinion) start shattering invention set bonuses to add some cheez (a LOT of cheese, but still) you will find one or more of those NECESSARY elements to be gone. A Battleship will sink with a Hole in it.

You are talking a LOT of cheese too....!

Depends on what you want to accomplish.  I have no illusions about tanking with a Dark/Dark Brute.  Might as well lean into killing (er, arresting!) targets.

I just find it more relaxing to build an unkillable murder ball that does nearly as much damage as a maxed dps build.  To each their own

curious, would this build work on a Dark/Dark Scrapper??

Probably, but resistance armors are MUCH better on tanks and broots, due to the higher caps.

As mentioned the Scrapper has significantly lower resistance caps.  Dark Armor does not have defense debuff resistance.  So I do not build for defense.  Instead I amplify the CC with accuracy and put the resistance on roids.  I did run a Dark Dark Stalker recently.  Surprised at the good survivability but not my playstyle. It wasnt tanky per se, but it was solid. Of course I am well practiced with Dark Dark so always knew what I was doing ten seconds in advance

I actually just started a Savage/Dark Brute today. It fits a concept I am working on, but I had a question about the myriad of toggles. Do you tend to run Oppresive Gloom and Cloak of Fear together? Do you use one more than the other? I also noticed you take OG a little later than I would have thought practical. Is that because Cloak of Fear is a better mitigation power than OG?

I do it in that order because 1) that is the order they come in at and I am boring 2) you can stack Cloak of Fear with Touch of Fear

Use ALL toggles.  Yes, all of them.

Dark uses AoE stun and AoE fear to mezze the nobodies.  This gets rid of a ton if annoying incoming attacks.  If you do not take both those toggles do yourself a favor and quit reading. Dark Dark uses to hit debuffs to also reduce incoming attacks.  Dark has non suppressed stealth.  When they cant see you eating their friend twenty feet away you can call that defense.  So Defense strategy set

Now, your big bads ignore most of that.  Soooo… some of the best resists in the game. Do not neglect energy resistance.  It can be built into a nice neighborhood.  I have Tanked Rom on a Master Run because i have energy resistance

BEST heal in the game.  Available every few seconds.  Top of my head i think mine sits at 8 sec recharge.  From .0001 health to 100%.

Dark Melee provides very good ST damage.  Bolstered by Dark armor damage aura there is decent AoE as well.

since a Dark Dark Brute is rarely killed you will win any and all DPS races.

the most spectacular tacoing of my Dark Brute i recall was a shadow shard TF.  A teammate got stuck in a crossroads in a cave map with tons of big spawns all around.  My overconfident butt went in. Those F-ing eyeballs ignore steath. So part of my “defense” was gone.  Then…..oof.  Rikti, some Nemi and a very few Longbow Wardens do the same.  You need to learn the groups and know the odds.  Only bet on winning hands.

Absolutely fantastic information. Thank you @Snarky. I've never played a Dark Armor character before, but I can honestly say this has been some of the most fun I've had in game in a while. My endurance isn't at a point where I can run everything just yet (only level 32 right now), but paired with Savage Melee it definitely is a ton of fun.

Also, that heal is ridiculous. Even with no global recharge it's up so often that it darn near takes a true act of God to put me down completely.

Have fun!  Run correctly it is one of the most powerful armor srets in the game.  (in my opinion)  DO make sure your build includes some +to Hit and +accuracy.  +to hit is way better.  The Stun aura has a crap base accuracy and you want it cleaning minions off.

I followed this build to the letter and he still gets slapped around at 54x8. I thought Brutes were supposed to be durable, but he goes down faster than a White House intern. What am I doing wrong here? 🤔

This is not a farm build.   This is a regular content build.  I do not know what tactics you are using. Your post indicates you do not think they are necessary. I do not know your incarnate choices. Or if you incarnated.  I do not know what enemy groups you walk into at 54x8.  Almost every Brute/ Tank build in current game will only do 54x8 vs a select subset of enemies.  This build is a general build for ALL content.   Most builds that sit in 54x8 rely on defense.  This is a build that if you run into super hard content you need to PLAY.  That means think about enemies, use correct inspirations, prioritize enemies, and knock stuff down.  It is not meant to sit in 54x8 (random enemy farm) and AFK farm.

What made you think I'm farming? I'm playing regular content. I was under the impression that it was supposed to be a tankier AT, albeit not as durable as a true Tank.

It might help to explain what you are exactly taking on which is causing so many issues. Simply saying it goes down rather quickly isn't all that helpful. Case in point, I have a Ice/stone build which soloed +4/x8 before hitting level 50, so that meant no 50 +1, and facing actual +5s while solo. There are certain missions I wouldn't dream of dealing with +4/x8 even with Incarnates factored in.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute.  10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller.

Are you able to fight anything? at +4/x8?  Do you use Rune of Protection? Inspirations?

The reason I thought you were farming is I very rarely die with this Brute build.  One memorable occasion trying to save a Blaster from about four full spawns of Rularuu, and a few times in a Really Hard Way Magisterium attempt in the final fight.  (Tough fight for any melee really)

Farming would explain dying, to me.  Or you are not using Dark Dark correctly.  At +4/x8 you do not want to agro 2-4 spawns of 17 baddies.  You have Stealth.  Un suppressing stealth.  You can kill 17 +4/x8 Longbow while the other 150 +4 Longbow mill around thirty feet away and ignore you killing their friends.  When you whittle those down go get the next spawn.  Or charge two spawns and use Rune of protection and/or inspirations.  Time your heal and use it.  If you see you are down a third health but it took them 10 secs to do that, heal up.  You now know your heal will mostly cover anything they can do easily.  I can write everything about Dark...except a play by play against enemies I do not know, with your playstyle also unknown.

When I play this build it is easy street.  When you play it you die.  Find something else?  A Hyperstrike Invul Brute is nigh unkillable, even if you go to the bathroom.

I main a Dark/Dark Brute (though I use the term 'main' very loosely) and run a build very similar to yours. I absolutely love it. While it was not the most fun to level up, once at 50 I became the terrifying destroyer of content that I always hoped to be. It's survivability is certainly not on par with my tanks but it is strong enough that I can be fearless when playing it. After years of playing, don't remember the last time I died. It is beyond excellent for team play since so much of is it's survivability directly benefits your allies.

That said, I tend to solo more now than in the past. When I solo, I often (though not always) reduce difficulty to 0x1 so I can spend more time reading and digesting the story and less time smashing the faces of my enemies. I have a descent selection of blasters, scrappers, and stalkers built for this type of play but I have been pondering what a Dark/Dark brute that prioritizes damage and mobility at the expense of survivability might look like. It is a sloppy image that I haven't been able to satisfactorily develop. The AT and Power Sets lend themselves toward the type of play your build supports.

I appreciate you sharing the build. I have imported it and might be making some adjustments to mine based on your work.

Hey everyone just seeing this post on D/D brutes and I have one myself. They can be built very very durable, but Snarky commented on the most important part of the armor set. My dark brute was built around massive Hit debuffing, fear, and disorients. This alone with your dark regeneration, will keep you chugging along easily. My build is very very hybrid indeed, but I found that minus to hit is king with Dark brutes.
