Was wondering which is better the katan vs the broadsword? I mean i see the attacks are fairly similar. But as far as animation times ect goes? Also will pairing with either Elec Armor or Energy armor havent decided which yet.

Katana has faster animations, and hits nearly as hard.

Broadswords big relative strength is you can combine it with Shield - which Katana cannot do.

Great Justice - Invuln/Energy Melee Tank

Ann Atomic - Radiation/Super Strength Tank

Elecutrix - Electric Blast/Super Reflexes Sentinel

Ramayael - Titan Weapons/Bio Scrapper

C'len - Spines/Bio Brute

Katana does more damage at any level of recharge than BS, and the difference increases in favor of Katana the higher-recharge the build is.

/crossfit

/my first 50 was BS/SR hoverscrapper, no regrets

You can, however, put BS with a Shield.  I can only anticipate BS+Shield, assuming it has an audience, rather thoroughly outperforms Katana.  :)

For extra credit, put it on a Stalker, slot the ATO, and live your life auto-critting headsplitter, cause why not?

Without enhancements, yeah, BS/SD is better than Kat/Invuln or w/e.  The difference is pretty minimal at normal Fury and slotting levels (~100% recharge, ~100% dmg, 75 Fury).  At higher build scores, or with something like Bio as the secondary, Katana pulls back ahead.  It really is that much better.

SD's awesome though, and I'm not talking about survivability or anything like that here.

Yeah, SDs advantage on damage shows more strongly on Tank or Brute than Scrapper, because Fury.

Same is ofc also true of Bio.

If there's a Katana player on a team with a Broadsword team, you can be sure the Katana player will remind the BS guy (and everyone else) that Katana is so much better. At one point it was like Katana players were doing Crossfit and they just wouldn't shut up about it.

(Note: I've had BS scrappers and experienced this almost every time I came across a katana player. I've actually had them private tell me until I started ignoring them. I don't know what the heck is wrong with these zealots.)

I always had ... fun, I guess you could call it ... with the Katana zealots while playing Redlynne, my MA/SR/Soul Scrapper.

I'd watch the damage numbers we would both be outputting on targets ... verify that the Damage Per Attack numbers were in my favor (even without Focus Chi/Build Up) ... and then say in Team chat (a few times):

"My sneakers are doing more damage than your sword!"

They rarely had any comebacks to that (true) observation, so it rather neatly shut them up about how "superior" Katana was to ALL other melee primary powersets.  *^_^*

I ran a BS/Regen Scrapper for most of Live until the end.

I was in a SG with a Katana/regen Scrapper leader.

We were pretty much the same build.

So naturally there was always the talk of who would win.

One day we were doing a SG PVP thing and he and I squared off.

I housed him.

Headsplitter, Disembowel, Hack.

He was dead.

Never again did I hear the question brought up.

Then there was a TF we ran without a Rad for debuffing AVs. We stone walled on Recluse. The tank had no problem holding him there. and with the other DPS pouring on the pressure Recluse was steady at half health. Even with build up running he squeaked by at a sliver of health, then healed up once Build Up wore off. It was very frustrating.

Yeah, SDs advantage on damage shows more strongly on Tank or Brute than Scrapper, because Fury.

Same is ofc also true of Bio.

Opposite actually since SD and Bio's +damage% buff is higher for a scrapper.  Combine that with that higher buff affecting a higher base damage on a scrapper than a brute or tank.  Fury doesn't really have anything to do with it as fury buffs base damage, not enhanced/buffed damage.

Interestingly enough I noticed the -damage debuff in bio for being in defensive stance is the same for both brute and scrapper, but the offensive stance damage buff is higher for scrapper.

I've played katana a lot and have never and would never do this.  But I guess I shouldn't be surprised how rude people can be.  Now, if I'm asked, like in this topic, I'll always say Katana will give you better dps, but broadsword is fine if you like seeing big numbers, for PvP (as someone else brought up), or if you just like the feel/animations/character concept reasons better.  Or of course if you want to use a shield.

I do think they should give broadsword a slight damage bump.  It doesn't have to be exactly as good dps wise as katana as broadsword does have some of its own advantages, but a little bump wouldn't hurt.

You are absolutely correct.  I had meant to type ‘On Tank or Scrapper rather than on Brute’

And yes, for the same reason, Defensive Adapation hurts a Brutes output less, again because Fury.

Let's be clear:  Katana is known as a great powerset for good reason.

Nothing wrong with Broadsword - however the speed difference mentioned makes whiffing that much more painful.

What I'd rather see is a debate on Katana vs Dual Blades.  Katana and Broadsword get the nice +defense attack but still...

I took on a full +4/8 group of freakshow on my stalker after the alpha dropped our brute, and the chaos that followed killed everyone else in the group.

Broadsword / elec - I was spamming party to keep defense capped and my lightning auras took care of their other dmg.

Was hilarious being the best tank in the group as a stalker. That mission changed my opinion on broadsword and katana defense buffs. Might not be as useful at 50 with full IOs, but having on demand stacking defense while leveling is amazing.
