In my experience this level of mitigation is mostly redundant in today's game and Controllers don't have a damage powerset to fall back on. Add to that - controls prevent mobs from grouping up for AoE debuffs & attacks. Overuse of controls can actively impede a team's progress and Containment requires control. I'm sad at what the current state of the game has done to this AT. This is by no means universally true. While yes, there are primaries which offer low amounts of damage, Ill, Plant, and Fire are no slouches in the damage department for something offering the most team mitigation. 1 Top 10 Most Fun 50s. 1. CaptTastic Posted July 24, 2024 Posted July 24, 2024 Really interesting thread, this. The reason I play corruptors (and have since Live) is down to playstyle. I hate to be in melee. Find it hard to see what I need to see. It’s just not for me. I’m an all-ranged hover blast kind of guy. I like blasters, but when I play them I’m wasting half of their potential damage as I’m rarely in melee range. When I play defenders, I find I probably don’t blast as much as I want to. I’m playing my own team more often than not. That leaves Sentinels and Corruptors. I love Sentinels but they’re very basic to play, especially when you’ve IO’d them properly. So I play Corruptors to give a bit of variation, when I want to do more than just blast. 1
Hiyori Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 I am a support main in any game I can be, so I've played a LOT of corruptors, as well as defenders and controllers, and to a lesser degree masterminds. When it comes to corruptor, it will largely depend on the support set itself. A very BUSY support set, where the set requires more time spent babying its powers, I am more likely to take it on defender and pair it with more utility-heavy blast set, OR to put it on controller. When I discuss this with friends, I often refer to it as action economy, hearkening in a way back to tabletop games. After all, City of Heroes is a game where you will spend a lot of it flattening groups of enemies that are wiped out in one or two powers from an entire team. For example, I recently have been leveling up a Marine/Water defender. Through doing so, I've realized that Marine itself doesn't take up much of your action economy to do its job. Now, I'm looking at a Fire/Marine corruptor as well. But a set like Elec Affinity? Personally, I would never play it on a Corruptor, ever, because it takes so much time up. Then, there's Controller, which I will often also pair with heavy action economy sets, because a lot of controller gameplay will boil down to 'I use one control power on this pack and then I can engage with my secondary'. I can't even begin to tell you how many team-focused Earth/* controllers I've got. Coming back to corruptor, the core of it boils down to: 1. Do I plan on playing with a secondary that leaves me a lot of time to be BLASTIN'? If so, I'll lean to corruptor. 2. Do I plan on playing with a secondary where the difference between having defender numbers really matters? Now, with all that said, I also find myself comparing my Corruptors to my Blasters. I like the damage of corruptors coupled with the safety of having a utility set, so if I am playing a lot with random players, I'll lean corruptor. Blasters I'll typically play if I know I'm going to be with someone else bringing the support, since having even one support really greases the wheels of a group. 2
Lusiphur Malache Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 When I was new to Homecoming, I joined a small SG that didn't have a lot of support. I am adverse to playing defenders, masterminds frightened me, and controllers are to passive. That left corruptors. My first was Sonic/Pain and I haven't looked back since. I also like playing against type, reason why all my defenders are offenders and my corrs are more force multipliers.
MonteCarla Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 I generally play Defenders (19 Defs, 6 Corrs out of my 50's), but I'm part of a group who play all-Corrupter and all-Defender task forces every week. The all-Corrupter one falls on a civilised 9.30am Sunday here in Australia, whereas the all-Defender one is the not-so-nice 4.30am Monday. So I play a Corrupter with them. 🙂 I've got 6 Corrupters to 50 now, another one was a Kinetics/Energy who I re-rolled from Defender after looking at the potential damage numbers (and low Defender damage boost cap). The others were.... one was part of an Empathy duo with a friend, and one was Elec/Elec rolled as a Corrupter just for a change? honoroit Posted August 10, 2024 Posted August 10, 2024 Why corruptor? DMG, support. Really good ones: - fire/thermal: it's just stable. Marine affinity might supplant this. However, I'd miss having real heals and slotted shields. Skip forge - seismic / kin: self explanatory, exceptional. Can't fly tho.
PsychicKitty Posted May 16 Posted May 16 (edited) I made a theme based fire blasting radiation corruptor thinking the toggle radiation effects would be excellent with the slowing and other things. But in the end on a curruptor the slowing doesnt happen the actual debuffs are less then on all other archetypes and the fire blasts are slow recharging range is low and the damage is subpar. I tried helping my character with a bit of stealth and not sure why but its not as effective on the corruptor as It is with other Archtypes. Normal stuff like typical enemies like skulls or prisoners as examples just decide to attack when their should not be a way to pierce the stealth effect. I face plant 3 or 4 times per game.....my debuffs have a better taunt than a tank with taunt mods. I made the character for a theme and thought wow this will be a great team character but instead I force the team to try and protect me more then actually battle enemies. Truthfully I think the corruptor has some broken stuff and obvious stuff hidden under the hood to give it penalties. I am Getting ready to make a ridicule video about them like what was done with summoners in Aion when their floating spirits where not realky flying and would jump off a cliff and die from the fall. Forctge corruptor I will show it using its debunks and how its not doing much then compare with a blaster or defender or dominator or controller and show how all of them do 90% more damage with the same powers butvalso actually have a noticeable debuff. Guffnat Posted May 19 Posted May 19 (edited) I play Controllers 90% of the time and level them mostly through DFB, TFs and Teams running radio missions or story arcs. Controllers feel really powerful in the stage from lvl 1-30 but once people have all their nukes, patron powers etc. crowd control can feel redundant at times especially with powersets that need a bit more time/preparation to setup kills. That's why I started playing a Corrupter yesterday. Elec/Marine. Well, this toon is a menace. Once you can open with Ball Lightning > Whitecap > Short Circuit you won't stop giggling at those numbers. It's so much fun! And that's what CoH is all about. caradoc1979 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 I spent the last few years on my main scrapper, and tried a bunch of alts that went nowhere from different ATs. However, I am sticking with my first-ever corrupter, an Ice/Storm, because my god the AOEs do everything I could ever want: debuff, slow, and damage. It's glorious fun seeing scads of Scourges filling my screen! 2
LightMaster Posted July 6 Posted July 6 (edited) The one great thing about CoX is the fact that each Archetype has their own niches: Blaster: One of the two non-Epic Melee + Ranged Archetype with unparalleled damage in most scenarios. Defender: Highest buff / debuff numbers that can help a coordinated team a lot. Scrapper: Highest Melee DPS overall and still some nice survivability vs Stalker. Stalker: Stealth with no End cost, highest ST DPS (especially with Energy Melee!), Assassination for a powerful burst danage, at cost of less survivability than even Scrappers. Tanker: Highest survivability and consistently great aggro control. Brute: Solid middleground of Scrappers and Tankers. Fury can also allow Brute for ranged shenanigans (Temporary Powers and Epic Pools) if your concept allows it! Also, by far the most solo-friendly Archetype. Sentinel: In practice, a ranged Scrapper, and very fun in their own right. Unfortunately most Sents doesn’t come close in DPS when you compare to Scrappers, Corruptors and Blasters, but the intent is crystal clear. Controller: Very helpful for early game and keep grouped enemies together, or prevent another group (i.e. Ambush) from overwhelming the team. Dominator: The other non-Epic Melee + Ranged Archetype, less control power compared to Controller in early game, but have more immediate damage and is a powerhouse in late game, especially those whose build allows it to Perma-Dom. Mastermind: For pet-oriented players and tend to be stronger if there is two MMs or more. Buff their henchmen up alongside teammates for more success! HEATs: Shapeshifting Jack-of-all-trades with their own traits, with Peacebringers having their own heal, buff and melee powers (and are a monster in 1v1 PvP if mastering the changeling exploit!) while Warshades having their debuffs and mezzes. VEATs: More team-oriented than the above, with Arachnos Soldiers having emphasis on damage or pets (and Venom Web Grenade!) while Widows can either go for more control and semi-tankiness, or more Psionic mezzing. What makes the Corruptor special is that it is essentially a more efficient swiss-army knife than the HEATs, by being less survivable but is more than capable of dishing out more damage via higher damage scalar, Scourge and debuffs than both Defenders and Controllers. Having the capacity of second highest DPS on their own - Blasters being first - if not surpassing even them in some circumstances also gave Corruptor a serious edge over support-oriented Archetypes like their direct counterpart, the Defenders, themselves already a very solid Archetype. I also feel more relaxed when playing as a Corruptor when compared to other Archetypes; as long as I don’t forget to buff my team or debuff the foes, I can expect some smooth sailing and do whatever I want so long I benefit my team, and same when there is another competant Corruptor.
