earning XP is to fast

Recommended Posts

I wish there was some way to make it so one does not earn EX as fast. Like at charter creation one could pick as an advanced player hard mode where one earns one tenth 1/10 the XP of normal. The reward is a badge say at 5th 10th 20th 30th 40th and 50th levels. Now at any time one could turn off hard mode but once turned off it can never be turned back on so if one want to earn the 50th level badge one must play in hard mode the entire time the player is leveling that character.

I am frustrated that when I makes enemies powerful enough to make them into an actual challenge to make the game actually fun I am leveling up so fast, sometimes I might actually level up one and a half levels in only one single mission, where I level past a story ark long before I ever finish it.

Options --> General Tab --> Disable Earning XP

Or just use the slash command "/option_set NoXP 1"

I think* that it would not be too hard to add -50% and -75%  as a counterpoint to the bonus XP available from START (nee P2W).  And, assuming that it is easy, I see no harm in adding that as a choice.  I could even see it adding bonus Inf, like the boosters trade XP for Inf, but turned off at level 50 as well.

I also want to remind the OP and others that might see this that players can choose to add difficulty settings to any TF or Ouro arc.   You can buff enemies, debuff yourself and teammates, remove benefits of enhancements, prevent the use of inspirations, and limit powers in several ways (no power pools, no temporary powers, no travel powers, and/or no epic/patron powers).

Edited to add that I don't like the badge portion of the OP.  Making new badges that my old badge collector could not obtain is a non-starter for me.

No badges should be awarded that one can't go back to get.   Plenty of people would hate that.

I'm still advocating for a way to set a level to not go past it.   So you set a number (via a slider like the sidekick one) via it that you won't hit.   Once you hit that, any XP goes to patrol or whatever.

Though I think they're still toying around with a way to do content on outleveled contacts, it might be a bit before we see that.

I don't know why there should be a badge/series of badges.

The game won't give you that next set of contacts until you reach a certain level, so all you would be doing is more missions from the previous set and AE until you were ready, and then repeat the process for that level range.

Any player wanting the badges would have to do this, and if they really wanted them then they would, but no player now beyond those checkpoints would be able to get them so why punish them for something that doesn't really impact anything?

As stated...  Turn off XP until you are ready to gain it again.  Earn XP until you are close to a switchover and shut it off.  Then you can do any/everything that you want to get done before yo8 level out of it, and when you are ready you can turn XP gains back on and finish up that last mission or hop over to AE or whatever and move on.

Or maybe I am missing something?

This can all be done with the switch to turn off XP.  The difficult thing is occasionally you forget to turn it back to zero and zip past where you didn't want to outlevel.  So while I feel it's low priority, it would be nice to have other options.

Didn't this use to be an option?   Reduce XP to receive bonus INF?  I think I remember hearing something about that being exploited?   Frankly, I'd love that while running Praetorian missions.  I've no problem turning off the XP in the Options panel for my characters, but it would be nice to make some extra cabbage while functioning that way.

Yes, once upon a time, when players turned off XP gain, they earned double inf'.

Its a matter of bragging rights. If you can go back and get it there are no bragging rights and anyone can do it. Right now you could level up a character in a matter of hours all that says is you found the fastest way to level up which is not much of a deal or to brag about. If you have to go though the effort of earning ten fold XP it says that you went through a lot more effort to get there and something worth some bragging rights.

They probably turned that off because of the game economics. I played before the auction houses where added and players would find some really low level player and dump millions of inf on them because after about level 20 or so you earned more than you could possibly spend. I would not be all that shocked it there where level 50 players who had billions of inf. When the auction house was first opened up people where paying thousands of inf for the most common items. I was part of a super group where I became the owner of the group because everyone else left and I raided the stock house before deleting the super group. This was just before the auction house was opened and with everything I raided I sold all of it in the auction house and I had hundreds of millions of inf within a matter of weeks. I lost it all when I let my subscription laps of course.

That is the problem though. Currently existing characters players have can't get that badge or those badges. Not unless they start their characters over. There was previously a badge that players could not get for their characters except by starting over. Then a lone minion was tossed into Recluse's Victory with a 3 hour spawn timer for those players to try to get the badge with if they did not start their characters over. The resulting hate for that happening is why the badge portion of your request will never happen.

Not sure why you are explaining to me. I was simply answering @Techwright's questions.

I don't see the issue since you can have a thousand characters in each server why not just create a new character.

Because a new character won't get those existing badge gathering characters the proposed badges.

I could also spend a great deal of time levelling a character, playing nothing but missions offered by contacts and spending time reading every word of dialogue the game throws at me, while the hypothetical player that activated their 10% XP gain to "work harder for the badge" could hit up the most egregious XP farms that AE has to offer.

Turning off or reducing XP gain isn't "hard mode".  It may well not even be "takes more time to level mode".  Nothing, not a single thing, becomes harder for a toon with XP turned off than it does for an equal-level toon with XP turned on.
You will continue to run level-appropriate missions from contacts and AE for as long as you want to.  They don't suddenly become more difficult.  The game is set up that way.  The contacts will not give you a mission until you are of an appropriate level.  AE will work with whatever level you are.

And they certainly shouldn't introduce a new badge for it since so many existing toons would be shut out for no reason other than "you made your character too soon".

... honestly, I think that was more an annoyed dev reacting to badgers at the time kind of being asses about it.

Because people have put time and effort into their current badge collectors. Strange you should need that explained when you're also talking about "bragging rights for doing XYZ."

(Disclaimer - I'm not a badger. Don't usually care, other than an occasional title or two, such as running a recently rolled /time character into RV at level 1 to get "Sick of time travel.")

The lone Contaminated? Yeah, it most likely was. The correction that made it possible to get the Contaminated's defeat badge through Ouro' though, tells me badges that can't be gained except by starting over won't happen again.

100% on board for offer options to lower xp gains. However I'd prefer it be done the same way we can get double xp boosters now through the START vendor.

Not on board with any of that badge stuff.

The request to "slow down XP" maybe sounds reasonable to some people, but IMO anyone who thinks turning off XP isn't a viable solution is probably not thinking things through. I don't understand why "I want XP, but less of it" is even a thing, since the "AE Inf Nerf" for level 49s... which happened about a million years ago on Homecoming. The initial OP request sounds like it is motivated from some old farming guide from the early days of Homecoming, with an unstated "less XP more Inf, please".

Immediately something that comes to my mind: The current way Patrol XP works (especially with exploration badges) would certainly be the next thing that players unwilling to turn off XP to end up clutching the pearls about.

As a practical matter, there are only certain levels where XP has to be turned off in order to experience "all the content" at level.

Why wait? I've been angry about the exploration badge reward being changed to patrol xp since it was done specifically because even if I turn off XP like I used to for explores, it still awards xp anyway. Just patrol xp instead which cannot be disabled for some reason. And everyone should be well aware of how I feel about patrol xp itself on these forums by now.
